An Excellent Book after you have installed Linux

With the assistance of a friend who is more familiar with computer hardware than I am, I installed Linux on my PC several months ago. After that I downloaded a whole bunch of How-Tos and started exploring the Linux System. While the How-To's were extremely useful, they were a little obscure at times. Also they didn't always answer my questions. A month later I purchased 2 Books on Linux - Running Linux by Welsh & Kaufman and A Practical Guide to Linux by Mark Sobell. Welsh & Kaufman's book deals more with Systems Programming and Hardware Issues. In fact, the two books complement each other quite well. Running Linux is also somewhat "chattier" than Sobell's book which basically just "tells it like it is". Sobell's book, although it covers Systems Administration, mainly deals with issues like shell programming, editors, utility programs and programming tools. There are chapters on the Linux utilities, the filesystem, the Shell, X-Windows, the vi and Emacs Editors. Most importantly for me, there are 2 chapters on the Bourne Shell and Bourne shell scripts. Although there is an O'Reilly book on Bash which I have not seen and which presumably deals with Bash programming even more comprehensively, Sobell's book was the most useful and useable source of information on Shell programming that I have found so far. The Command summary at the back is also well presented and useful. Sobell does make extensive use of internal references, presumably because he did not want to restate the same material. While this does lead to a bit of page turning to get an answer sometimes, it leaves more room for other material, so I can readily accept it. Given the enormous amount of possible material that could be covered in any book attempting to deal with Linux comprehensively this is probably the wisest course. If you want a book on Linux and Hardware, then buy Running Linux by Welsh & Kaufman or download the appropriate How-To's (or both). Sobell's book is for use after you have your hardware problems largely solved and want to get on with customizing your system, using X-Windows, utilizing the various compilers, learning about the the Linux/Unix filesystem and basically getting the system to do useful things. There are several small quibbles I have with the book though. Firstly, there is the overlarge Typeface on the Table of Contents starting on Page xvii and running through to xlvii (that's 30 pages for the Roman Numeral illiterate) which is FAR too many. It appears to me that the Table of Contents is also meant to be used as a sort of Reference Guide. This is fair enough but the typeface is way too big. Secondly, as I said above, any comprehensive book on Linux/Unix will have to make decisions on what to put in and what to leave out and this is fair enough. However, it would be nice if the book included an appendix saying where one can obtain information on the topics not dealt with in the book. In fact, I would go further than that. A comprehensive Bibliography of Linux/Unix in general would be a worthwhile addition. One notable Linux utility program not mentioned is Perl. A brief discussion of it in the Linux Utility Programs section would have been nice or alternatively an appendix like that for regular expressions. Admittedly Perl is a vast topic, and doing justice to it in 6 pages is possibly a bit much but some sort of reference would have been nice. The book is an adaptation of the author's two other books on using Unix. Given the nature of the Linux community, Linux users tend to be fairly knowledgeable about Mice and Keyboards already, so pictures of them are probably not necessary. Given the overall quality of the book, these are relatively minor criticisms. All in all, in my opinion, Sobell's Practical Guide to Linux is the best book available on the market, bar none, for quickly and effectively getting to use the Linux editors, X-Windows, shells and Linux Utility Programs If you have a copy of A Practical Guide to Linux and Running Linux you should be able to solve most Linux problems.

This book could use a USEFUL rewrite. It's a textbook with typical incremental editions that earn someone a fat check. As it stands, it's poorly organized and lacking in areas, while too fluffed in areas that don't matter. Not my favorite.

Highly recommended for use in the classroom. Recommended for independent study.

I am an aerospace engineering graduate moving on to a masters program in the fall. I purchased this book because my degree program did not include a class geared specifically toward solving partial differential equations analytically. This book provides a great transition from solving ordinary differential equations to solving partial differential equations, as well as covering the situations that they arise in physics and engineering. I was able to follow the text on my own and answer a number of questions I had upon completion of my undergraduate studies, as well deepen my understanding of complex analysis and conformal mapping.

My one complaint for this text is that there are a number of very important concepts left to the reader to discover on their own via the exercises. Most of these exercise problems walk you through the problem, but a few simply leave it up to the reader to "figure it out." This is probably the best way to learn if you have the same amount of time that the founding mathematicians did when they made such discoveries, but I would have preferred a few more explanations in the body of the text. With that said, if this book is used in the classroom, I am sure the professor and teaching assistant can make up for this discrepancy (I just wasn't fortunate enough to be in that position).

The only issue I have with this book is the softcover is very thin and bends easily. Other than that, it's the book that I needed. Delivery time wasn't amazing but it was acceptable.

The first few chapters are not helpful, giving no examples on how to work problems.

This text assumes much more than it should. Although I understand Diff EQ, and some Linear Algebra, the text was basically very vague. I prefer exhaustive explanations, as opposed to "a smoke and mirrors" approach. Unfortunately this book fits within the usual collection of over-generalized and poorly explained material that has sadly become the norm in technical education. Why give us exercises covering theorems that the book may not have even addressed. At a minimum, anything that is educational should be helpful.

Excellent High School textbook

I bought this book to teach chemistry to a dozen homeschoolers ranging in age from 13 to 18. The more I use the book, the more I like it. It's been nearly 30(!) years since I took chemistry, and I'm able to teach it with no problem. The text is filled with photos, graphics and loads of example problems. It's engaging to the eye without being overwhelming. The information is presented logically and clearly. The corresponding student textbook and study guide are excellent as well. I use a lab manual designed for home use-- the companion lab manual is terrific, but sometimes calls for chemicals that can't be sold to individuals or equipment that is just too prohibitively expensive (a hood).

If I had had this book 30 years ago when I was taking chemistry courses in my college of engineering I would have probably enjoyed chemistry. I recommend this book as all the materials added besides the academic part is really making good sense and help get motivated to learn more. It is better than the other books my daughters had in high school or in college.

Great Beginner Book...

This book was great for a beginner in the Information Technology degree path. It breaks out principals simply, and in a way that's easy to understand for the average reader. The chapters are medium in length and I found them easy to read. I had to order this book for ITS101, that I'm taking in order to gain my degree. I felt the book was easy to read and a great source of information, even though I have over 15 years of IT experience.

Basic Biology made Advanced

I was skeptical about reading other reviews on this book saying it was "bad" and didn't make any sense, but I'm going to agree with them on this one. My class for college required that I purchase this book and so I have no other choice to read this book. I'm reading the first chapter and I don't understand how on earth (no pun intended) they made basic biology so confusing. I've taken biology before so this isn't particularly new to me but this book makes it seems so confusing and difficult to understand. I'm literally in the middle of reading Chapter 1 but I just had to stop to write this review because reading this textbook anymore is just going to make me angry.

Do not buy this book or make the mistake of taking a class that requires this book. It's obviously too early in the game, but dropping this class may have to be an option for me.

EDIT 4/13/15: So it's the end of the semester for me, and I thought I'd at least give a short post review. Previously I had given the book a 1/5 stars, but I think it's a solid 3 now. Biology is a difficult and complex subject and so it really isn't the easiest to teach. I found that the chapter reviews at the end of every chapter really helped me solidify the information. That + whatever in-class material you have should definitely suffice for an A. It's not the easiest book, so you might have to re-read a paragraph here and there.

Good for the visual learner.

I bought this textbook for my biology class (yay, gen eds!) and I was expecting it to be boring. It was. But at least it wasn't as miserable or confusing as many other textbooks I had the misfortune of reading.

As far as textbooks go, this one is great. It's about average page length and chapter length. The pages are fairly sturdy and don't wrinkle as easily as a normal book's pages do. It has a nice, clean layout with lots of graphs and charts to help the visual learner. The information is always relevant to the chapter titles, and the content doesn't deviate much from other types of biology textbooks.

A note for students whose classes may be asking for the 10th edition: this book is almost exactly the same. Some small sections are switched around, but the chapters are otherwise exactly the same and even in the same order. I really suggest you save yourself a couple hundred bucks and buy this one instead. You won't be missing anything.

A COMPREHENSIVE BIOLOGY TEXT

Biology, by Audesirk, Audesirk and Byers is a very good biology text book which could be used either for HS or college level courses. At just over 900 pages, it is not the most comprehensive tome available but adaquate for general studies. Subjects covered are well worded but brief.

The book is well illustrated with many full color charts, maps, drawings and photos. There is a concise glossary. This, the 2011 9th edition is not the very latest, however, it is still very new and is OK for general studies. And it can be bought for a very small fraction of the newer edition's selling price.

This is a perfect book for any student or anyone wishing to know more about life on earth. It is much better than the book I had when in my college years.

About the Author

Priscilla LeMone, RN, DSN, FAAN

Priscilla LeMone  spent most of her career as a nurse educator, teaching ­medical-surgical nursing and pathophysiology at all levels from diploma to doctoral students. She has a diploma in nursing from Deaconess College of Nursing (St. Louis, Missouri), baccalaureate and master’s degrees from Southeast Missouri State University, and a doctorate in nursing from the University of ­Alabama-Birmingham. She is retired as an Associate Professor Emeritus, Sinclair School of Nursing, University of ­Missouri-Columbia; but continues to keep up-to-date in nursing as an author of nursing textbooks.

Dr. LeMone had numerous awards for scholarship and teaching during her over 30 years as a nurse educator. She is most honored for receiving the Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence from the University of ­Missouri-Columbia, the Unique Contribution Award from the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, and for being selected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

She believes that her education gave her solid and everlasting roots in nursing. Her work with students has given her the wings that allow her love of nursing and teaching to continue through the years.

Recently married after 8 years of widowhood, Dr. LeMone lives in Ohio..When she has time, she enjoys traveling, gardening, and reading fiction.

 

Karen M. Burke, RN, MS

Karen Burke has practiced nursing in direct care and as a nurse educator and administrator. She is currently the Education Consultant for the Oregon State Board of Nursing. In this role, she serves as a consultant to new and existing nursing education programs in the state. Her work with the Board also involves evaluating and proposing policies and regulations for nursing practice and education. One of her favorite parts of this position is speaking with nursing students about entering the profession and the scope and standards of nursing practice.

Ms. Burke entered nursing with a diploma from Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon, later completing baccalaureate studies at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), and a master’s degree at University of Portland. She retired as the Director of Health Occupations at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon, after helping initiate and develop the nursing program, as well as expand it to a distant site using on-line instruction. She currently is a member of the steering committee for the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education, a partnership between OHSU and Oregon community colleges to deliver a shared baccalaureate nursing curriculum throughout the rural state. She also is actively involved in the Education Committee of the Oregon Nursing Leadership Council, helping identify strategies to recruit and retain nursing faculty, develop innovative clinical models, and provide policy guidelines for nursing education programs in the state. In addition, Ms. Burke is working with nursing leaders and educators to identify and develop strategic plans to more effectively educate and use practical nurses (LPNs) in Oregon. She is co-author of another text, Medical-Surgical Nursing Care (2rd edition) with Priscilla LeMone, Elaine Mohn-Brown, and Linda Eby.

Ms. Burke strongly values the nursing profession and the importance of providing a strong education in the art and science of nursing for all students preparing to enter the profession. Her diverse experience as a nursing student, clinical nurse, and nurse educator and administrator has prepared her to relate to nursing students at all levels and in diverse programs.

Ms. Burke divides her time between a house in the country with her husband Steve and spoiled cat, and a small condo in the city. She and Steve love to garden, travel, and spend time with their extended family. Ms. Burke enjoys a passion for quilting, accumulating and gradually completing multiple UFOs (unfinished objects).
