Modern Systems Analysis and Design covers the concepts, skills, methodologies, techniques, tools, and perspectives essential for systems analysts to successfully develop information systems. The primary target audience is upper division undergraduates in a management information systems or computer information systems curriculum; a secondary target audience is MIS majors in MBA and M.S. programs. Although not explicitly written for the junior college and professional development markets, this book can also be used for these programs.

We have over 50 years of combined teaching experience in systems analysis and design and have used that experience to create this newest edition of Modern Systems Analysis and Design. We provide a clear presentation of the concepts, skills, and techniques students need to become effective systems analysts who work with others to create information systems for businesses. We use the Systems Development Life Cycle Model as an organizing tool throughout the book to provide students with a strong conceptual and systematic framework.

The book is written assuming that students have taken an introductory course on computer systems and have experience designing programs in several programming languages. We review basic system principles for those students who have not been exposed to the material on which systems development methods are based. We also assume that students have a solid background in computing literacy and a general understanding of the core elements of a business, including basic terms associated with the production, marketing, finance, and accounting functions.

Three Illustrative Fictional Cases
Pine Valley Furniture (PVF): In addition to an electronic business-to-consumer shopping Website, several other systems development activities from Pine Valley Furniture are used to illustrate key points. Pine Valley Furniture is introduced in Chapter 3 and revisited throughout the book. As key system development life cycle concepts are presented, they are applied and illustrated with this illustrative case. For example, in Chapter 6, we explore how PVF plans a development project for a customer tracking system. A margin icon identifies the location of the case.

Hoosier Burger (HB): This second illustrative case is introduced in Chapter 2 and revisited throughout the book. Hoosier Burger is a fictional fast food restaurant in Bloomington, Indiana. We use this case to illustrate how analysts would develop and implement an automated food ordering system. A margin icon identifies the location of the case segments.

Broadway Entertainment Company, Inc. (BEC): This fictional video rental and music company is used as an extended project case at the end of fifteen out of twenty chapters, beginning with Chapter 4. Designed to bring the chapter concepts to life, this case illustrates how a company initiates, plans, models, designs, and implements a web-based customer relationship management system. Discussion questions are included to promote critical thinking and class participation. Suggested solutions to the discussion questions are provided in the Instructor's Manual.

Using This Text

As stated earlier, the book is intended for mainstream SA&D courses. It may be used in a one semester course on SA&D or over two quarters (first in a systems analysis and then in a systems design course). Because of the consistency with Modern Database Management, chapters from this book and from Modern Database Management can be used in various sequences suitable for your curriculum. The book will be adopted typically in business schools or departments, not in computer science programs. Applied computer science or computer technology programs may adopt the book.

The typical faculty member who will find this book most interesting is someone

• with a practical, rather than technical or theoretical, orientation
• with an understanding of databases and systems that use databases
• who uses practical projects and exercises in the course.

More specifically, academic programs that are trying to better relate their SA&D and database courses as part of a comprehensive understanding of systems development will be especially attracted to this book.

The outline of the book generally follows the systems development life cycle, which allows for a logical progression of topics. However, the book emphasizes that various approaches (e.g., prototyping and iterative development) are also used, so what appears to be a logical progression often is a more cyclic process. Part I of the book provides an overview of systems development and previews the remainder of the book. Part I also covers those skills and concepts that are applied throughout systems development, including systems concepts, project management, and CASE and other automated development technologies. The remaining five sections provide thorough coverage of the six phases of a generic systems development life cycle, interspersing coverage of alternatives to the SDLC as appropriate. Some chapters may be skipped depending on the orientation of the instructor or the students' background. For example, Chapters 1 (environment of SA&D) and 2 (critical success factors for SA&D) cover topics that are emphasized in some introductory MIS courses. Chapter 5 (project identification and selection) can be skipped if the instructor wants to emphasize systems development once projects are identified or if there are fewer than 15 weeks available for the course. Chapters 10 (conceptual data modeling) and 12 (database design) can be skipped or quickly scanned (as a refresher) if students have already had a thorough coverage of these topics in a previous database or data structures course. Finally, Chapter 18 (maintenance) can be skipped if these topics are beyond the scope of your course.

Because the material is presented within the flow of a systems development project, it is not recommended that you attempt to use the chapters out of sequence, with a few exceptions: Chapters 8 (process modeling), 9 (logic modeling), and 10 (conceptual data modeling) can be taught in any sequence; and Chapter 12 (database design) can be taught after Chapters 13 (output design) and 14 (interface design), but Chapters 13 and 14 should be taught in sequence.

Good Book for Basic Understanding of System Analysis

I used this book for IST 232 at Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) for one of their online classes. We only used a few chapters for this course (there is a LOT of information in this book).

Of the chapters we used, the authors did a very good job of explaining the basics of system analysis and design. Many diagrams/figures were given, showing both correct and incorrect notations.

I would recommend this book, though students generally don't have the approval authority for textbooks in a class.

A Mixed Bag...

The difficult part of systems analysis is that you can really only learn it by doing it... and that pretty much means that a book can only provide theoretical information on this topic. The book concentrates on the SDLC model and discusses other approaches whenever appropriate.

It can be boiled down to this: Structured analysis and design = good.

These are the kinds of structured analyses:
SDLC (Waterfall)
JAD
Prototyping
Agile

The solution: Pick the one that most closely aligns with the goals and duration and scope of the project.

The book does go into some interesting historical information relating to these models, and in general--the depth of detail it goes into in some of the basic analytical processes such as DFDs and related diagramming are excellent for a neophyte coming into the field; but getting them right isn't something this book (or any book) can really teach you. Systems analysis is a professional practice that has its own working knowledge--just like medicine or engineering--and most of it can't be learned from a textbook.

This isn't a horrible book, but I think it would benefit more by taking a single case study and differentiating the processes it discusses as it walks through the whole book. This book also has a very dry delivery.

About the Author

John W. Creswell is a Professor of Educational Psychology and teaches courses and writes about educational research design, mixed methods research, and qualitative methodology. He has been at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 30 years and has authored 12 books, numerous new editions of these books, and over 150 journal and book chapter publications.  These works focus on quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research. In addition, he founded both the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the SAGE journal, the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan and assisted investigators in developing proposals for extramural funding in the health sciences and education.  In 2008, he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar to South Africa and lectured on research methodology at five universities.

This book provides step-by-step methods in data collection and analysis, helping one avoid common mistakes in research, and helping one increase the reliability and validity of a study. In this book, a discussion of different theories and research designs assists the reader in selecting the framework of the study. This is a practical and easy to read book with an excellent chapter on action research, which is especially beneficial to K-12 educators. As a doctoral student, I find this book extremely valuable.

I bought this book as a required text for one of my on-line classes. I am in my second graduate class which is about quantitative and qualitative research and I am very impressed with the quality of this text. If you are a researcher, this book is a must have. If you are a reader of research, this book is also a must have. It is very well written and provides numerous examples of how to properly organize and write effective quantitative and qualitative research papers.

Success in work and in life is fun and rewarding. It's a great game, but a gamethat requires a very strategic plan, and we'll show you how to follow the planstep by step. As you read, you'll notice that you've become a player in a cardgame with us. You won't have any cards to start, but with each new chapter,you'll gain insight into a different hand of cards that will lead you to success.Each hand has a lesson--a strong suit that you'll have to play. At the end ofeach chapter, you'll be asked to draw at least one card to get actively involvedin the game in your own life. This strategy will keep you in an active, doingmode and out of a passive, thinking mode.

After you complete each card's instructions in your own life, you'll record yourresults in your game plan at the back of the book. This is a game you'll be ableto play throughout your life because, as your goals change, your game plancould also need to change. Shuffle the Deck and Play against Yourself

In a card game, the cards are shuffled to challenge the players. Likewise, youare encouraged to shuffle the deck to get better and better at unexpected situationsand mixed suits. By the end of the book, all fifty-two cards will havebeen on the table and you'll have played many of them. You'll have recordedthe results in your Game Plan. Not just another self-help book

I've read quite a few self-help and business how-to books, and usually they are good for an idea or two. This one goes way beyond that, however. It has more helpful concrete information per square inch than any other business book I've read. I assumed I'd read this, then pass it along or resell it -- but no way! I'm keepin' this puppy. (Buy your own!)

If you want a reality check about the image you project at work, or some ideas about how to break the ice with the boss, or you need to figure out why your ideas just never seem to get the response you'd like at meetings, this book is definitely for you. It doesn't just tell you what to do; it describes a few ways to go about it, describes how each way might be perceived, and then walks you through some practical examples of how to go about trying something new.
I was surprised at how much information the authors included on topics that I hadn't considered much but that, by gosh, really do matter. A lot. This book comes at a topic from all different angles, and gives you quick fixes, easy things to do that are very effective, and also things you can (if you choose) build on if it's something that matters a lot to you. It is extremely thorough, in an easy-to-read way. For example, I've never really paid serious attention to clothes. I have the requisite business attire and know the "rules" -- nothing flashy, good tailoring. But I was fascinated by the discussion of color, different levels of business dress from formal to casual and what really differentiates each level (the unspoken rules that, yes, really do matter), a detailed and intimate talk about details you thought you could only count on a close friend for (bad breath and what really works and what doesn't, taking basic care of your fingernails), and a marvelously sensible talk about how to take care of different fabrics ("Between cleanings, wool garments should be hung out overnight before being put back in a closet. Wool is a resilient fabric and will return to its natural shape if allowed to breathe."). I found myself approaching my closet with new respect.
This is one of only a very few self-help/business books I've ever read that actually resulted in my changing something. And it was easy. I can count at least 4 things I changed immediately, with little effort, after reading this the first time. The chapters on increasing your visibility (hard for us shy types) and attitude and style are worth their weight in gold. The book is very useful as a reference you can go back to for ideas, and for ways to rethink a situation.
This one's a keeper.

Good Messages in a Confusing Flow

Although classified as a Business book, this title is really a self-help book. It was confusing for me as a reader, possibly based on my expectations.
Based on the subtitle of the book, I expected that I might see a card deck kind of format clearly presented. I imagined perhaps 52 great ideas that I could use to build my effectiveness. The fan of playing cards on the book cover reinforced that expectation. When I finally got past the pages of the publisher's advertising to reach the table of contents, I found that there were nine "hands," an introduction, a preparatory chapter, and a conclusion. Each hand (examples: attitude, visibility, style, listening, learning) in the table of contents has categories that highlight information and advice that would be helpful for anyone looking for some self-improvement help. There are graphics of success cards at the end of each chapter, but the graphics were not emphasized as well as they could be in the chapters. This is a design issue, rather than content, but the design affects the readability of the book.
Some "players" are introduced in the first chapter, representing composites of readers. The idea here, I believe, is that readers would be able to identify with these characters as they move through the book. These characters do stay with us through the book, but an army of other people pop in and out as examples in various vignettes. This parallel theme confused me as I was trying to follow the players and all the valuable advice being offered by the authors. The result of all these themes, a large number of call-out boxes, and a sans serif typeface made this book seem overly complicated.
Unquestionably, there is a lot of valuable advice in these pages, but be prepared to separate the book you'd like to read from the others that seem to be interwoven with it. The index, which appears just before the closing advertisements from the Financial Times, is helpful. The conclusion includes a survey with check-boxes that will enable the reader to focus on next-steps.

About the Author
Gary Ferraro, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, received his BA in history from Hamilton College and his MA and PhD degrees from Syracuse University. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Swaziland in Southern Africa (1979-80) and again at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic (2003), and has served twice as a visiting professor of anthropology in the University of Pittsburgh's Semester at Sea Program, a floating university that travels around the world. He has conducted research for extended periods of time in Kenya and Swaziland and has traveled widely throughout many other parts of the world. He has served as a consultant/trainer for such organizations as USAID, the Peace Corps, the World Bank, IBM, Georgia Pacific, Duke Energy, and J.M. Huber, among others. From l996 to 2000 Dr. Ferraro served as the Director of the Intercultural Training Institute at UNC-Charlotte, a consortium of cross cultural trainers/educators from academia and business, designed to help regional organizations cope with cultural differences at home and abroad. In 2000 he became the president of Intercultural Associates, a private firm specializing in cross cultural training, consulting, and coaching. Cultural Dimensions of Ferraro

Throughout this book Ferraro takes on the idea of being a theoretical observer of different characteristics that the typical North Amercian has in comparison to the rest of the world. He takes these dfferences and applies them usefully to the area of International Buisness. The book goes through many different catagories including language, communication (verbal and non-verbal), precise time reckoning, and even culture shock. As a student, I found this book to be very insubstantial for a textbook, but I believe that it would be a wonderful starting point for buisness people of any age to read before doing any international buisness realtions. I wish I had read this book before I went and lived in Europe for 5 months, I think I would have been able to communicate a little more easily.

So maybe if you are doing a high-school report, this book might be useful - but only if your teacher does not allow Wikipedia as a source. Because I am sure Wikipedia would be much more accurate and informlive than Ferraro's The Cultural Dimension of International Business.

If this book was an attempt at covering the basics and not actually a source of literal understanding on cultures, well it still sucks. Ferraro does not touch on anything specific. He overly generalized every culture, but warns the reader to be careful of over-generalizing cultures. He picks a culture, uses it to make a point but never explains it, for example: Don't do A, B doesn't like it when you do A. See how C did A, now B and C don't get along. And that's it. In fact, when explaining the offense, he uses maybe 5 words. It's not even clear what the offense is, let alone why one shouldn't do it. I'm not even exaggerating.

Ferraro doesn't give readers any clear definitions in the book. It's frustrating really, you read on, wait for something meaningful to come up, and he just chops it off. I really don't know how he filled over 200 pages. This book will not produce any type of valuable references. All examples are already common in the study of culture and business. If they are in this book, they are then out-of-place. I often wondered why he would put some things where he did. I read the whole book (for class) and I seriously think I got dumber from reading it. Do not read this book thinking you're going to improve your practical understanding in other cultures, there are better books out there.
