About the Author

Dan Chiras earned his Ph.D. in reproductive physiology in 1976 from the University of Kansas Medical School. After graduating, Dr. Chiras pursued interests in environmental science and has become a leading authority on environmental issues and sustainability. He is currently a Mellon Visiting Professor at Colorado College where he teaches courses on energy and the environment, renewable energy, ecological design, sustainable development, and sustainable systems design. He has published 20 books and nearly 250 articles in journals, magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedias. In the past eight years he has focused much of his attention on environmentally friendly building and has published several books on the subject including The Natural House: A Complete Guide to Healthy, Energy-Efficient, Environmental Homes; The Solar House: Passive Heating and Cooling; The New Ecological Home; and Superbia! 31 Ways to Create Sustainable Neighborhoods. Dr. Chiras also lectures widely on a variety of topics, including ways to build a sustainable society, green building, and renewable energy. In addition to his scientific and environmental pursuits, Dr. Chiras is a river runner, cross-country skier, bicyclist, organic gardener, and musician. He and his two sons live in a state-of-the-art environmental passive solar/solar electric home in Evergreen, Colorado, overlooking the snowcapped Rocky Mountains.

John Reganold received his Ph.D. in soil science from the University of California at Davis in 1980. He has worked as a soil scientist with the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service and as an environmental engineer for Utah International Inc., a worldwide mining company. As a professor of soil science at Washington State University since 1983, he teaches courses in introductory soils, land use, and organic farming and conducts research in land use and sustainable agriculture. He also advises undergraduate and graduate students in soil science and environmental science. His excellence in teaching and research has been recognized by several awards from Washington State University. Dr. Reganold has published more than 80 papers in scientific journals, magazines, and proceedings, such as Science, Nature, Scientific American, and New Scientist. His studies have received national and international attention from newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. He has given more than 100 invited presentations on his research to international, national, and regional groups of scientists, students, growers, and consumers from around the world. In addition to his research, he enjoys spending time outdoors, swimming, cycling, and backpacking.

Great Read (for a school text book)

I guess the title says it all 'Great Read (for a school text book)'

This was a book that was required for a class I took. I read it from cover to cover. I have to say - each chapter was well written and interesting. Each chapter addressed a different natural resource (for example air, freshwater, etc) including many I never considered (like top soil).

There is a newer edition out there. I contacted the publisher about an update. In hindsite I cannot believe that I, a simple minded student, would ask a publisher for an update! I guess that's just a testament to how interesting the book was, I was thinking perhaps maybe a pdf containing the 2 new chapters. The response I got was NO!

Now that the stink eye has been focused on the publisher, there was one point in the book that was a bit annoying. I did not like how the text kept refering to a picture or figure or graphic that almost always was on the next or the previous page turn. I guess that's the challange of the publisher and will always be a problem with the published medium.

OK ... so maybe I dont particularly care for the publishers, but it wont stop me from buying another book from them and this is still a great book.

Preface Playing the "shell" game is a lot of fun. This book was written to make your learning experience both fun and profitable. Since the first edition was published, I have heard from many of you who have been helped by my book to realize that shell programming doesn't need to be difficult at all! Learning by example makes it easy and fun. In fact, due to such positive feedback, I have been asked by Prentice Hall to produce this new, updated version.

Writing UNIX Shells by Example is the culmination of 17 years of teaching and developing classes for the various shells and those UNIX utilities most heavily used by shell programmers. The course notes I developed for teaching classes have been used by the University of California Santa Cruz and University of California Davis UNIX programs, Sun Microsystems Education, Pyramid Education, DeAnza College, and numerous vendors throughout the world. Depending on the requirements of my client, I normally teach one shell at a time rather than all three. To accommodate the needs of so many clients, I developed separate materials for each of the respective UNIX shells and tools.

Whether I am teaching "grep, sed, and awk," "Bourne Shell for the System Administrator," or "The Interactive Korn Shell," one student always asks: "What book can I get that covers all three shells and the important utilities such as grep, sed, and awk? Should I get the awk book, or should I get a book on grep and sed? Is there one book that really covers it all? I don't want to buy three or four books in order to become a shell programmer."

In response, I can recommend a number of excellent books covering these topics separately, and some UNIX books that attempt to do it all, but the students want one book with everything and not just a quick survey. They want the UNIX tools, regular expressions, all three shells, quoting rules, a comparison of the three shells, exercises, and so forth, all in one book. This is that book. As I wrote it, I thought about how I teach the classes and organized the chapters in the same format. In the shell programming classes, the first topic is always an introduction to what the shell is and how it works. Then we talk about the UNIX utilities such as grep, sed, and awk, the most important tools in the shell programmer's toolbox. When learning about the shell, it is presented first as an interactive program where everything can be accomplished at the command line, and then as a programming language where the programming constructs are described and demonstrated in shell scripts. When shell programming classes are over, whether they last two days or a week or even a semester, the students are proficient and excited about writing scripts. They have learned how to play the shell game. This book will teach how to play the same game whether you take a class or just play by yourself.

Having always found that simple examples are easier for quick comprehension, each concept is captured in a small example followed by the output and an explanation of each line of the program. This method has proven to be very popular with those who learned Perl programming from my first book, Perl by Example, and UNIX Shells by Example now has been well-received for those who needed to write, read, and maintain shell programs.

The three shells are presented in parallel so that if, for example, you want to know how redirection is performed in one shell, there is a parallel discussion of that topic in each of the other shell chapters, and for quick comparison a chart in Appendix B of this book.

It is a nuisance to have to go to another book or the UNIX man page when all you want is enough information about a particular command to jog your memory on how the command works. To save you time, Appendix A contains a list of useful commands, their syntax and a definition. Examples and explanations are provided for the more robust and often-used commands.

The comparison chart in Appendix B will help you keep the different shells straight especially when you port scripts from one shell to another, and as a quick syntax check when all that you need is a reminder of how the construct works.

One of the biggest hurdles for shell programmers is using quotes properly. The section on quoting rules in Appendix C presents a step-by-step process for successful quoting in some of the most complex command lines. This procedure has dramatically reduced the amount of time programmers waste when debugging scripts with futile attempts at matching quotes properly.

I think you'll find this book a valuable tutorial and reference. The objective is to explain through example and keep things simple so that you have fun learning and save time. Since the book replicates what I say in my classes, I am confident that you will be a productive shell programmer in a short amount of time. Everything you need is right here at your fingertips. I feel pretty confident in bash

I only knew introductory linux. I feel pretty confident in bash. Great problem sets. Unlike some textbooks, this one makes a concerted effort to explain each line of example code.

Outstanding Book. A must for learning shell programming.

Several of my fellow system engineers bought this book and they loved it. I purchased this book about three weeks ago and I have not put this book down! There are still several typos in the examples, but, like all programmers and engineers know, debugging is part of the job. In all honesty, fixing and tweaking the examples is actually fun. I strongly recommend creating the labs at the end of the chapter. These exercises will solidify your knowledge.

The best Unix Shell book I've ever read!

If want to learn about shells and you learn by example, like I do, this book is essential.

The first 6 chapters (nearly 200 pages) goes over the basics of all shells; what they are, what they do, what programs are most used to manipulate data in them. There are whole chapters devoted to grep, sed and awk, and the author doesn't skimp on details. You will be a virtual grep/sed/awk guru by the time you learn everything in these chapters.

Chapters 7-15 introduce and get you into scripting of each major shell: Bourne shell, C and TC Shells, Korn shell, and Bash (bash is the standard shell in most linux distributions). It then spends a chapter on general debugging shell scripting problems.

The last chapters touch upon system administrating via the shell (rather than using gui tools). Again taught by example so it's very clear to the reader.

I learned more about bash (my shell of choice) from this guide than any other that I've read, and not for lack of trying, I've read several bash guides. I was happy to see that examples given were explained line-by-line so you don't lose track of what is happening in each example. I was delighted by the useful appendices covering useful commands and giving side by side shell comparisons.

This is my favorite shell book to date.

The headlines blare: "DEFENSE ATTORNEY CHALLENGES THE POLICE EVIDENCE IN MURDER TRIAL, charge the police with planting and sloppy handling of evidence." Stop! Back up! How did that happen? The officers did everything according to the book, they explained, although the book was beginning to miss a few pages and the officers got sloppy in carrying out their work in the fashion they believed the book had (or should have been) written. The problem is, we have to write an updated version of the book, and then require our personnel to read it and adhere to its precepts.

For many years, as crime scene investigators, we collected the evidence, took the photos, prepared the reports, and eventually presented the evidence in court. Hardly ever did anyone, especially defense attorneys, challenge our motives and our methods. We did our job as professionals do. It was a debatable presumption that a job done by professionals was believed to have been done completely and correctly.

Then something happened: Attorneys found that by challenging the evidence and the way it was collected and handled, and by suggesting that perhaps the evidence collectors had some ulterior motive, the case could be won by raising sufficient reasonable doubt about how the entire case was handled. This was not a new tactic, but with the mega-publicity blitz given the so-called "trial of the century" and the media-hyped "dream team" of high-priced attorneys, other attorneys have taken the baton and run with it.

The purpose of this book is to focus on the basics of crime scene investigation as it should be done by professionals. Not only must the crime scene investigators perform a perfect job, but the crime scene investigators' work must appear to others as having been done perfectly by unbiased investigators searching for the truth in every case. The crime scene investigator is not an advocate for one side or the other—that is the role of the opposing attorneys. As a CSI officer, your advocacy is for the evidence and whatever it proves.

As authors of this text, we face the challenge of writing to at least three distinctive audiences: the student, the sworn crime scene investigator, and the non-sworn crime scene investigator. To be sure, there are others we hope to reach, such as officers assigned to patrol, investigators, educators, prosecutors, defense attorneys, journalists, and others, but the primary focus is on those three groups.

We, too, have varied backgrounds: one is a college professor who is a former police lieutenant, one is a forensic specialist assigned to crime analysis duties, and the third is a detective sergeant assigned to crimes against persons. We all have one thing in common, having all been involved in police training. It is this collection of talents that allows us, we believe, to deliver a text that can meet the needs of our varied audience. Here is what we hope to accomplish:

TO THE STUDENTS

You are likely studying criminal justice or forensic science. Perhaps you have decided that crime scene investigation is your calling. Or maybe you are not sure yet and are looking for information to help you make up your mind. Maybe you are just taking a class to learn more about what is certainly an interesting topic. In any case, this text has been designed to provide you with current, realistic information that presents an accurate overview of the role of a crime scene investigator. We provide both basic and advanced information. While you may not yet actually be responding to crime scenes or processing evidence, this text will provide you with a good idea of how and why it is done. This ranges from getting to the scene to conducting various aspects of investigating the crime scene to testifying in court.

TO THE NON-SWORN CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATOR

You are perhaps new to the field or are interested in reviewing basic crime scene concepts, or adding some new concepts to your repertoire. As a non-sworn investigator, you represent the typical CSI officer for most larger departments. Because of longer, more stabilized assignment to CSI, it is not unlikely that your work will be superior to that performed by an officer who is not particularly happy in his or her current assignment. We applaud your dedication and your efforts to seek out additional information to enhance your skills and expand your knowledge. In this text, we provide you with solid advice on how to go about your investigation of crime scenes. In addition, we have devoted many paragraphs to enhance your well-being, both fiscal and physical, and your career development. There is little in this book that will not apply to you, either as a head start in your chosen profession or as a valuable refresher, or to keep your career moving "fast-forward."

TO THE SWORN PEACE OFFICER CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATOR

As a peace officer, you might be assigned full time as a crime scene investigator, or you might be on an auxiliary assignment, or on an assignment you plan to pass through after a few months. In many jurisdictions, the entire crime scene responsibility rests with the patrol officer assigned to respond to the call. Perhaps you are assigned to patrol and want to expand your knowledge and improve your skills in this area. If so, we strongly support your efforts to better serve your department and community. All officers who respond to crime scenes have some responsibility, and the more knowledgeable you are about your role as well as everyone around you, the better the job you will perform.

This text will provide you with the high level of relevant and realistic information you need to process crime scenes in today's environment. As a sworn officer, your needs will differ from those of the non-sworn investigator. For example, we have included information about safely responding to the crime scene. This entails a different set of issues for you than it does for the unarmed investigator. We recognize the differences between the players and have included basic safety information pertaining to all who read the book, whatever your assignment.

This is a very good introductory Criminal Justice text. It is easy to see that the authors targeted the general introductory cj students and those interested in exploring the field of crime scene investigation. Basic terms and proceedures are presented in clear everyday science based applications. This text uses understandable charts, graphs and photos to enhance crime scene applications. This text is clearly not for those who are working at the graduate level, but it clearly meets the needs of the student who is surveing forensic opportunties. Good job

Good introductory book.

I found this book to be a solid introduction into the varied and complex field of CSI. It presented a balance between basic and advanced techniques. The authors state this book was written for students considering CSI and those currently in the field and I agree. It provided a refresher in some areas and exposed me to new concepts in others. I also liked the community-policing feel of this text as it relates to addressing the needs of victims. The book is easy to follow and contains many photographs. I recommend it to anyone considering a job in CSI or to enhance their skills. I also read the first edition. This one seems to be much improved.

Crime Scene Investigation

As a former police reserve officer, I spent years requesting CSI with little understanding of just what they do. This book goes well beyond lifting fingerprints and other routine tasks that police officers are typically limited to. I now have a better awareness of the capabilities of CSI and conciderations about how to protect a scene and how CSI can be used to investigate certain crimes. I also have a greater appreciation for CSI personnel and the difficult job they have. I liked the book and believe it would be helpful to anyone in law enforcement.

All You Need

With any large commercial software package that has books devoted to teaching it, invariably the vendor will offer an exam. The vendor's stamp of approval on a successful passing grade has a built-in cachet. Well IBM's dB2 is one of the oldest major packages, and it certainly has exams. As is typical in these things, IBM also offers a book on exam preparation.
Naturally comprehensive. Has test questions AND answers. It does not each the theory of relational databases. You need to be clear on this. Now it certainly shows the many SQL options that IBM has implemented in dB2. But here also, you need to know that the book does not really teach SQL either. You are expected to already know SQL and have enough familiarity with dB2. The intent here is to cover the topics that will be in the exam, and do this well enough so that you can find any gaps in your knowledge and remedy these. The focus is strictly utilitarian. Lest you think this is too restrictive, let me note that it is often so with such books, and not just by IBM.
You might be encouraged to know that the book covers just the introductory certification. More advanced exams are outside its purview. For example, in a companion IBM text, "DB2 Version 8 - The Official Guide" by Zikopoulous et al, you can find more difficult topics to master. But if you are time constrained, the Study Guide will be better value.

Bought the book on a Sunday and read it cover to cover in 6 hours. Make sure that you do the quiz at the end of each chapter. It is important to understand the reasoning behind the answer. This book reads easily and covers all the material on the test. Questions on the actual test are very similar to the type of questions in the book. The book also points you to the location for free practice test.

This book helped me pass the test with 95% (you need 61% to pass) a day later.

Great Book

If you are planning on taking exam 700 this is the book for you. I took the exam today and to me it feels like the author wrote the actual exam. The practice tests on the book are very similar to the real test, the only thing to watch out are for are that the actual question is a little bit of a variation from your practice test for example on the practice test the VIEW is created using WITH CHECK OPTION but on the real test that option is not there. The only reason I give this book a rating of 4 is that I still believe that couple of review questions on the text book is still wrong. Be sure to take the practice tests on the IBM website, trust me it will help you...

Dr. Harvey M. Deitel, Chairman of Deitel & Associates, Inc., has 42 years experience in the computing field, including extensive industry and academic experience. Great to learn with, bad resources

This book is very good on teaching the basics of C#, and makes you think a bit. The tutorial driven approach enables you actually get experience in every chapter ( at the end of every chapter are good exercises). The problem is that you do not have the answers to the excercises available unless you have the Teacher edition ( this is a classroom book ) , and Deitel will not help you out in this area ( say if you are stuck on an excercise ).There are also 'Programming Challenges' at the end of every chapter that have you use command and concepts that you have yet to learn ( not in all but some ). Other than that, this tutorial is very good, just bad customer service from the authors.

A step forward

I would say that this book would be the step after Deitel's C# How to Program. The concepts in this book are more mathmatic then what is in How to Program.

In essance I found explanations of most of the concepts vague.

If you are just beginning to program, then i would say do the How to Program first and Simply C# after. You should be able to write some decent programs and head into an ADO or ASP .net book from there.

Very good for a beginner

If you are new to C# and has no experience with other C based languages (C, C++, Java), then this book should be the first book you should read. All the rudimentry concepts are explained in detail. The practice problems are marvelous. The author, unlike most programming authors, clearly understands the paramount importance of writing practice programs to learn a new computer language.
If you want to have a heavy duty understanding of ADO, ASP, and OOP, then this book will come up short. But there are other books in the market that will fill that niche.

What is geography? Geography is the study of where things are located on Earth's surface and the reasons for the location. The word geography, invented by the ancient Greek scholar Eratosthenes, is based on two Greek words. Geo means "Earth," and graphy means "to write." Geographers ask two simple questions: where and why. Where are people and activities located across Earth's surface? Why are they located in particular places? Geography as a Social Science

Recent world events lend a sense of urgency to geographic inquiry. Geography's spatial perspectives help to relate economic change in Africa, the Middle East, and other regions to the distributions of cultural features such as languages and religions, demographic patterns such as population growth and migration, and natural resources such as energy and food supply.

Does the world face an overpopulation crisis? Geographers study population problems by comparing the arrangements of human organizations and natural resources across Earth. Given these spatial distributions, geographers conclude that some locations may have more people than can be provided for, whereas other places may be underpopulated.

Similarly, geographers examine the prospects for an energy crisis by relating the distribution of energy sources and consumption. Geographers find that the users of energy are located in places with different social, economic, and political institutions than the producers of energy. Geographers seek first to describe the distribution of features such as the production and consumption of energy, and then to explain the relationships between these distributions and other human and physical phenomena.

The main purpose of this book is to introduce students to the study of geography as a social science by emphasizing the relevance of geographic concepts to human problems. It is intended for use in college-level introductory human or cultural geography courses. The book is written for students who have not previously taken a college-level geography course and have had little, if any, geography in high school. Divisions within Geography

Because geography is a broad subject, some specialization is inevitable. At the same time, one of geography's strengths is its diversity of approach. Rather than being forced to adhere rigorously to established disciplinary laws, geographers can combine a variety of methods and approaches. This tradition stimulates innovative thinking, although students who are looking for a series of ironclad laws to memorize may be disappointed.

Human vs. Physical Geography. Geography is both a physical and a social science. When geography concentrates on the distribution of physical features, such as climate, soil, and vegetation, it is a natural science. When it studies cultural features, such as language, industry, and cities, geography is a social science. This division is reflected in some colleges, where physical geography courses may carry natural science credit and human and cultural geography courses social science credit.

While this book is concerned with geography from a social science perspective, one of the distinctive features of geography is its use of natural science concepts to help understand human behavior. The distinction between physical and human geography reflects differences in emphasis, not an absolute separation.

Topical vs. Regional Approach. Geographers face a choice between a topical and a regional approach. The topical approach, which is used in this book, starts by identifying a set of important cultural issues to be studied, such as population growth, political disputes, and economic restructuring. Geographers using the topical approach examine the location of different aspects of the topic, the reasons for the observed pattern, and the significance of the distribution.

The alternative approach is regional. Regional geographers start by selecting a portion of Earth and studying the environment, people, and activities within the area. The regional geography approach is used in courses on Europe, Africa, Asia, and other areas of the world. Although this book is organized by topics, geography students should be aware of the location of places in the world. A separate index section lists the book's maps by location. One indispensable aid in the study of regions is an atlas, which can also be used to find unfamiliar places that may pop up in the news. Partly for this reason, the publisher has chosen to offer an atlas to accompany this textbook at no additional cost to the student.

Descriptive vs. Systematic Method. Whether using a topical or a regional approach, geographers can select either a descriptive or a systematic method. Again, the distinction is one of emphasis, not an absolute separation. The descriptive method emphasizes the collection of a variety of details about a particular location. This method has been used primarily by regional geographers to illustrate the uniqueness of a particular location on Earth's surface. The systematic method emphasizes the identification of several basic theories or techniques developed by geographers to explain the distribution of activities.

This book uses both the descriptive and systematic methods because total dependence on either approach is unsatisfactory. An entirely descriptive book would contain a large collection of individual examples not organized into a unified structure. A completely systematic approach suffers because some of the theories and techniques are so abstract that they lack meaning for the student. Geographers who depend only on the systematic approach may have difficulty explaining important contemporary issues. Features

What basic concepts do geographers use? Chapter 1 provides an introduction to ways that geographers think about the world. Geographers employ several concepts to describe the distribution of people and activities across Earth, to explain reasons underlying the observed distribution, and to understand the significance of the arrangements.

Where are people located in the world? Chapters 2 and 3 examine the distribution and growth of the world's population, as well as the movement of people from one place to another. Why do some places on Earth contain large numbers of people or attract newcomers while other places are sparsely inhabited?

How are different cultural groups distributed? Chapters 4 through 8 analyze the distribution of different cultural traits and beliefs and the problems that result from those spatial patterns. Important cultural traits discussed in Chapter 4 include food, clothing, shelter, and leisure activities. Chapters 5 through 7 examine three main elements of cultural identity: language, religion, and ethnicity. Chapter 8 looks at political problems that arise from cultural diversity. Geographers look for similarities and differences in the cultural features at different places, the reasons for their distribution, and the importance of these differences for world peace.

How do people earn a living in different parts of the world? Human survival depends on acquiring an adequate food supply. One of the most significant distinctions in the world is whether people produce their food directly from the land or buy it with money earned by performing other types of work. Chapters 9 through 12 look at the three main ways of earning a living: agriculture, manufacturing, and services. Chapter 13 discusses cities, the centers for economic as well as cultural activities.

What issues result from using Earth's resources? The final chapter is devoted to a study of three issues related to the use of Earth's natural resources: energy, pollution, and food supply. Geographers recognize that cultural problems result from the depletion, destruction, and inefficient use of the world's natural resources. Chapter Organization

Case Study. Each chapter opens with a case study that illustrates some of the key concepts presented in the text. The case studies are generally drawn from news events or from daily experiences familiar to residents of North America.

Key Issues. Each chapter contains a set of three, four, or five key issues around which the chapter material is organized. These questions reappear as major headings within the chapter. Other than in Chapter 1, all questions include one of the two key geographic concerns: where or why.

what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth ...

This book is a textbook for AP Human Geography, and as a teacher I have to say that it should be more balanced in its presentation. For example, on the chapter on Population, it compares the population policy of China (the one child policy) to that of India. It refers to China's one child policy as "successful" without mentioning that there are six million MISSING girls in China as a result of this brutal policy. It refers to India's population policy as less successful, when in fact India has a much higher respect for Faith and family. That is very concerning.

My students talked about these slanted views throughout the year, so this bias is noticed. We tried to add to the curriculum with inspriational stories which add so much when studying developing nations. For example, when studying about the World Bank and the IMF, what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth on Grameen Bank, which was founded by a professor from Tennessee who realized that he could free an entire village from economic slavery - with less than a $30 investment. Thus began the success story in empowering villages -and Muhammad Yunus thus created a bank owned by the women of small villages empowering other women. Compare that to the failure rates of the IMF and the World Bank! We need textbooks that inspire with what individuals can do in this world, and to create these textbooks would modify the feeling that too many people have that the problems of the world are so great that only big government can solve them. Better textbooks would be a good place to start.

It explained everything well and I love the layout of the chapters, but the cover ripped off pretty fast. I would recommend it for you if you aren't too rough with your books because the binding isn't very strong.

Love the binder version!

Arrived in perfect condition! Much cheaper and more convenient than a tradition book. I just put some page protectors around it and I'm good to go! It's a textbook, so nothing terribly exciting!
