About the Author
DR. ROBERT RIZZA is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical engineering at North Dakota State University, where he teaches courses in mechanics and computer-aided design. A native of Chicago, he received the Ph.D. degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is also the author of Getting Starting with pro/Engineer. Dr. Rizza has worked on a diverse range of engineering projects including projects from the railroad, bioengineering, and aerospace industries. His current research interests include the fracture of composite materials, repair of cracked aircraft components, and loosening of prostheses.

This book originated from an introductory engineering graphics and computer aided design (CAD) course taught at North Dakota State University (NDSU). The purpose of the course was to introduce the engineering student to Sketching, Visualization and Parametric Modeling. The emphasis of the course was that CAD is cornerstone of the engineering program and a way for the engineer to communicate design ideas graphically. This book along with earlier editions was developed with this philosophy.

This edition details the use of Pro/Engineer Wildfire and contains all new high-resolution screen captures. Additional models have been added. These are the parts which are used in the ButterFly Valve, Vise and HoldDown Clamp assemblies.

The layout of the book is similar to the previous editions. However, the chapters on drawings, sections, and tolerancing have been moved to occur earlier in the book. Furthermore, the Redefine option has been moved to Chapter 2 right after the user is introduced to the Sketcher. This change was made in order to show the student some techniques for dealing with errors introduced during the construction of a feature.

New tutorials have been added, including one on using points in the Sketcher, as well as some additional tutorials on dealing with failed features. Furthermore, in order to increase the effectiveness of the tutorials, the objectives of each tutorial are listed at the beginning of the tutorial.

Earlier editions of this text used short term and long term projects. This edition follows the same approach. In order to show how the tutorials and hence the projects are related to one another, a list of parts and assemblies is given. The reader should consult this list when planning on which tutorial to work through.

Throughout the book, Pro/E options and commands are written in italic face. Snapshots of the icons have been added in line with the text to allow the reader to readily find the feature on the software interface.

Additional exercises are provided at the end of each chapter to further reinforce the options and concepts presented in that chapter. The models in these exercises were selected to challenge the student in the use of the options under consideration. In many of the chapters, new assignments have been added. Many of the exercises from the previous editions have been reordered in terms of complexity and/or new figures produced.

Additional parts and formats have been bundled with this book and are needed to complete some of the tutorials. These parts and formats may be downloaded from the Prentice-Hall website.

Focusing on mechanistic-empirical design procedures, this volume presents a comprehensive exploration of the structural analysis and design of highway pavements.

Although the current Pavement Design Guide adopted by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is mainly empirical, a new guide based on mechanistic-empirical procedures will be published and implemented in the very near future. This book will provide the fundamental background to a full understanding of these sophisticated procedures.

The accompanying CD contains a Windows software called KENPAVE, which can be run on any personal computer with Windows 95 or higher. In addition to several input and graphics programs, KENPAVE consists of two well-known computer programs for pavement analysis and design:

The KENLAYER program for flexible pavements can be applied to a multilayered system under stationary or moving multiple wheel loads with each layer being linear elastic, nonlinear elastic, or viscoelastic.
The KENSLABS program for rigid pavements can be applied to multiple slabs fully or partially supported on a liquid, solid, or layered foundation with moment or shear transfer across joints.

Both programs can perform damage analysis by dividing a year into a number of periods, each subjected to different combinations of singleand multiple-axle loads.

Structural and geotechnical engineers can also benefit from this book by applying KENPAVE to the design of raft foundations. In addition to vertical loads, the foundation slab can be subjected to moments in two directions, such as those imposed by retaining walls, and the contours of positive and negative moments can be plotted. This information will be useful to determine the length and amount of reinforcements required.

The first edition of Pavement Analysis and Design was published in 1993. The widespread adoption of this book by so many colleges as an undergraduate or graduate text has encouraged me to write this second edition. A major event during the past decade was the completion of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), which led to the development of the highly publicized 2002 Pavement Design Guide. However, at the time of this writing, the final draft of the 2002 Guide is still not available. It will likely be a few more years before the Guide is approved and implemented by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). For this reason, only a brief preview of the 2002 Pavement Design Guide is presented, in an appendix.

Other than those improvements in the computer programs that necessitate changes in the text, not much is changed in the theoretical part of this book. Although new procedures were developed by SHRP for material characterization and pavement evaluation, these procedures, such as Superpave, are still in the developmental stage and will be subject to change as more experience is gained in their use. In this second edition, Superpave is presented in an appendix. To extend the usefulness of the book, a new appendix on Pavement Management System is added. It is hoped that a more extensive revision will be made in the third edition, after the 2002 Pavement Design Guide is fully implemented and all the testing and evaluation procedures are finalized. Major changes made in this edition are the following:

The floppy disk containing the four DOS programs is replaced by a CD containing a Windows program called KENPAVE, which combines the original KENLAYER, LAYERINP, KENSLABS, and SLABSINP into a single package, together with the addition of some computer graphics. The software was written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and can be run on any computer with Windows 95 or higher. Detailed instructions on the use of KENPAVE can be found in the software program.

Section 13.5 on the AASHTO method of overlay design has been totally revised. The 1986 AASHTO Design Guide was used in the first edition. The guide was revised in 1993 with practically no change in the design of new pavements, but the design of overlay was completely rewritten.

New developments and information from the literature have been added to keep the book current. A new method based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion has been added in KENLAYER for nonlinear analysis, and new comparisons age made between KENLAYER and the latest Windows version of MICH-PAVE.

Three new appendices have been added: Appendix D—An Introduction to Superpave; Appendix E—Pavement Management Systems; and Appendix F—A Preview of 2002 Design Guide. Appendix C is combined with Appendix B; a new Appendix C contains a brief description of KENPAVE.

To provide room for the above additions, Sections 3.4.3 (on contained rock asphalt mats) and 10.5 (on probabilistic computer programs) have been deleted. Also deleted from the appendices are the description of the input programs and the programming details of KENLAYER and KENSLABS, such as subroutines and flowcharts. The description of input and output parameters in Chapters 3 and 5 and the illustrative examples in the appendices also have been removed, because they can now be found in the software program.

I wish to acknowledge gratefully the contribution of my colleague, Dr. Kamyar C. Mahboub, who wrote the appendices on Superpave and Pavement Management Systems. These new additions broaden the scope of this book and make it more suitable for a wider audience. I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks to AASHTO, the Transportation Research Board, the Federal Highway Administration, the Asphalt Institute, the Portland Cement Associations, and many others who have permitted the use of the information they developed. Finally, I would like to thank my wife Jane for her support in the use of our retirement time on this book.

The pavement design bible

So what I can say about this book? It's simply the best. From very basic to advance pavement design, this book is full of theroetical concerns about the pavement design as well as empirical methods for special pavements. It also includes a software to simulate a road different layers behaviour when loads applied on top. Very useful and, in my opinion, a must-have for those engineers who work in this bussiness.

It is a very detailled text-book containing full description of the methods used. It distributes also the KENPAVE software which is the State-of-the-Art software for Pavements. It also cites and criticizes the Westergaard's solution as it has been reconsindered by Ioannides et al. It is absolutely necessary for the engineers occupying with science and practice.

This a great textbook and I stress the word great. The textbook offers guidence in defining terms, working with families, and facilitating futures for individuals who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe disabilities. Teachers and future teachers of the special education field will find everthing they need to know. The information presented is clear and understandable which is a relief, compared to various other textbooks.

Sonia Nieto

Sonia Nieto is Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy, and Culture, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught students at all levels from elementary through graduate school and she continues to speak and write on multicultural education, the education of Latinos, and other culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Other books include The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities (2010, 2nd ed), What Keeps Teachers Going? (2003), and two edited volumes, Puerto Rican Students in U.S. Schools (2000) and Why We Teach (2005). She has received many awards for her research, advocacy, and activism, including an Annenberg Institute Senior Fellowship (1998–2000), the Outstanding Language Arts Educator of the Year from the National Council of Teachers of English (2005), the Social Justice Education Award from the American Educational Research Association (2008), and honorary doctorates from Lesley University (1999), Bridgewater State University (2004), DePaul University (2007), and Manhattanville College (2009).

Patty Bode

Patty Bode is the Director of Art Education for Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her research interests include multicultural theory and practice in teacher preparation, the arts in urban education, and the role of visual culture in the expression of student knowledge. She has published and lectured on retheorizing identity and curriculum, redefining multicultural education, and critical art pedagogy. Years of experience as an activist public school teacher and teacher educator inform her art making, research, and teaching. She has received awards for efforts in anti-racist curriculum reform and bridging theory and practice in multicultural education, including the 2010 Art Educator of the Year for Higher Education of the Eastern USA Region by the National Art Education Association, the Massachusetts 2010 Art Educator of the Year for Higher Education by the Massachusetts Art Education Association, and 2005 Multicultural Educator of the Year Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education.

Compelling well-researched book on MCE

I own past editions as well as the last edition of this book. Every time Nieto and Bode have done an excellent job researching and writing about a complex topic that very often is simplified and commonly misunderstood. The case studies included bring to life critical issues and provide food for thought that should help generating several productive class discussions if the book is used as textbook. As an individual reader, I appreciate a book that makes me an active participant and that -with the author(s)- helps me reflect about important issues in an informed manner. This book does that. It provides solid research about topics that are critical and sometimes challenging, while it also stays effectively away from offering cookie cutter answers to very important issues. It does justice to multicultural education while appealing to an active and engaged reader. This is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone and that I would always love to have a good discussion about.

Too much about race and little coverage of cultures

The title of this book is badly mistitled. Although this book is well cited and thoroughly researched, the authors stressed African Americans over all other races. This is a book about multi-cultural education and yet the references were mostly about African Americans. Little research was given to Hispanics, Southeast Asians, Arabs and especially Native Americans. Women and girls are given footnoted references.

I do not disagree that racism does not exist in our schools. There are sound examples of racism in this country, and especially in our public schools where tracking, self-fulfilling prophecies, overuse of Special Education and underuse of Gifted Programs for minorities still happen. The authors blame the educators, though, and not the student who may not care to get an education even when offered. Afterall, Asian Americans seem to succeed in the classroom even though they are often face with the same discrimination as African Americans. Yet they are hardly mentioned or used in comparisons of how diversity CAN succeed in public schools.

Women and girls in this book are vaguely mentioned as "females" which always bothered me. Since girls make up half of the student body and represent unique issues in the classroom, why not grant them more studies to allow them to succeed more?

Although both Nieto and Bode are accomplished educators in high esteem, this book was hard to follow at times and at other times annoying. Many of the points could have been stated in shorter essays in education journals, giving this book somehow an air of "We needed the money so we compiled all these studies into one book!"

Don't get me wrong, though, as there were some good points mentioned in this book. Chapter 4, "Racism, Discrimination and Expectations of Students Achievement" was an eye opener.

I agree with a previous reviewer who stated that the authors should have used more Hispanic studies in their multicultural education studies. This book is about MULTI cultures and not just the Black race. For areas in the West and Southwest many of the references to African Americans are muted by the majority of Hispanic students in our schools who are still educated primarily by a white teaching staff.

This book was required reading for a college course. I plan on selling this book back after this semester.

About the Author

ROBERT C. MARTIN is President of Object Mentor Inc., a leading consultancy in object-oriented design, patterns, UML, agile methodologies, and eXtreme programming. He authored the JOLT Award-winning publication Agile Software Development: Principles, Patterns, and Practices (Prentice Hall) and the best-selling Designing Object-Oriented C++ Applications Using the Booch Method (Prentice Hall). A well-known speaker at international developer's events, Martin edited the C++ Report for four years.

It was 1991 when I got my first copy of Booch's classic Object Oriented Design with Applications (first edition). I had learned several OO languages by then, including C++ and Smalltalk. I was absolutely thrilled by the concept of Booch's notation. Those clouds! Those relationships! The message passing diagrams! As a software designer it was just what I needed!

I also needed a tool to draw the diagrams. So I started writing a CASE tool in Think-C for the Macintosh. I remember spending a lot of time getting the cloud icon to look just right. Though I never finished that CASE tool, one artifact of it remains. The cloud icon I created has followed me from computer to computer, from Macintosh to Windows, and has been the source of all the cloud icons I have ever drawn in any book or article.

I remember the incredible day that my office partner, Billy Vogel, was talking on the phone to a head-hunter. He looked over at me and said: "Uncle Bob, I think you should take this call." The recruiter was looking for consultants to work at Rational, with Grady Booch, on a CASE tool to draw Booch Diagrams! How could such luck drop right into my lap?

A dozen years have passed. I still have my original copy of Booch's book. It's a bit frayed and dog-eared, but the book still has the power to evoke echoes of the same old thrills.

Today, of course, we use UML -- the one-third offspring of Booch's notation. UML is a powerful and comprehensive notation, far grander in its sweep and scope than Booch's was. Whereas Booch's notation was good for drawing pictures of software, UML is apparently good for creating models of just about anything you can imagine -- or so say some of its pundits. As grand and all-encompassing as UML may be, I find that a reasonable subset is all I need for drawing pictures of software. The same kind of pictures I used to create with Booch's notation.This book is about that subset, and about those pictures. This book takes the vast richness of UML 2.0 and boils it down to the essence that every programmer needs in order to draw pictures of his, or her, software designs. This book reduces the panoply of UML widgets, icons, diagrams, relationships, and arrowheads, into a simple suite of tools that Java programmers can use to record their design decisions.

Make no mistake about it. This book will not teach you everything about UML. But if you are a Java programmer, it will teach you what you need to know.

Good book, sprinkle with salt

I just led a study group of 15 people reading this book. The book is very down-to-earth with a lot of practical advice for how a group of programmers can effectively use UML to aid in communication of ideas across a team.

It only covers 5 of the 11 or so UML diagram types, but it covers the ones that will really be used by java programmers day-to-day, in design documents, whiteboards, etc. For each it talks about real world, practical approaches on how to use them to communicate ideas.

Bob Martin is an 'Agile' guy, and it really comes across in this book. A lot of his arguments come down to "A lot of the pomp and circumstance surrounding UML is pretty useless, except when it isn't", and while he tries to instill when that will be, that kind of knowledge reaslly only comes with experience. He also advocates that the diagrams should be 'lightweight enough to be thrown away', which is an opinion that can rub a lot of people the wrong way, is a very valid position. While there is nothing inherently 'good' or 'evil' about UML, it is often used to help create a 'documentation glut'. I have seen situations where the documentation falls out of sync with the code, or worse... the code can't change because the documentation cannot be updated (because of some beurocratic red tape). The author seems to have had some bad experiences along these lines, and seems to have a lot of reactionary thoughts.

This is good! while a couple of other reviews here have called such advice 'impractical' (which it can be in a lot of environments), the information in the book is very valuable and the thought provoking nature about 'be as lightweight as you can' and 'avoid the UML police' are useful as long as you can take them with a grain of salt and apply the advice judiciously in your own work environment.

I definitely recommend this book to Java Developers who need to better communicate their ideas to groups of other developers. After reading this, there are other references should you need to 'go down the UML Rabbit Hole' a little deeper. this book is better first though, because it puts the relevant diagrams into practical context.

A breath of fresh air

Years ago I was working on a very complex project. One of the team members convinced the management that we needed CASE tools. After spending $$$ on them and countless hours learning them, we began to use them. I soon became convinced that they provided little to help the process and in the end, they nearly sunk the project. It was yet another pseudo code that did little to aid in the process of generating real code. So when UML came on the scene, knowing it's roots I was very suspicious. After looking more into it, I was pleasantly surprised by UML. I believe that most of my objections to CASE were addressed, but not all. I found that too many had simply replaced one dead weight with another. Again countless hours were spent generating documents that no one ever read or cared about. Yet UML was a valuable tool, why was this so? I shared this with my grown son who directed me to Martin's book, and it became clear that a valuable tool was simply being misused. It is obvious that Martin has been in the real world and knows when to use a tool like UML, how much to use it, and what it is best suited for. Rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water as I was tempted to do, Martin points out that UML is a good communication tool best used at a white board with a small team. Once everyone is on the same page, the team can proceed as a team. Martin doesn't over burden you with a lot of useless diagrams. He poses a problem, shows how UML addresses a design issue, and shows you the resultant design change. I subscribe to many of the XP techniques because I have used them and found them useful with the exception of pair programming which I did for a while and found it to reduce the productivity to the lowest common denominator between the pair. I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding UML and OO Design Essentials Primer

This book is a gold mine of insights into what is essential about OO design, UML notation, and their relationship to writing sound code. The book's focus is on how to create and understand essential UML design artifacts and fundamental OO design concepts to help you write better code. As the book proceeds, excellent examples are provided to ensure that the reader understands the crucial aspects of transforming code to UML and vice versa. UML's role in the development process is put in proper perspective as a tool rather than an end in itself. All the standard UML artifacts are covered: Class Collaboration, Sequence, and Object Diagrams, as well as Finite State Machines (the author isn't a big fan of Use Cases but they're briefly covered too). Moreover, the book includes excellent chapters on sound OO design principles for not only class hierarchies but also package and component building as well. A terrific synopsis of the author's take on an agile development methodology is presented and there are some meaty case studies against which one can try out his/her newly gained knowledge of the topics covered. If you want to learn solid OO design concepts and how to reliably and accurately represent them in UML then this book is for you. I'd also recommend the author's other recent book, Agile Software Development Principles, Patterns, and Practices which won a Software Development Magazine Jolt award.

With this eighth edition of GENES, 20 years have passed since the first edition. A novel feature of that first edition was the a presentation of prokaryotic and eukaryotic work in the context of a unified approach. Such an approach has now become commonplace as a result of along string of discoveries showing similarities in solutions to arc'-biological problems that often extend across many or even all species.

This new edition has been extensively revised and reorganized. The two most striking driving forces for change have been the sequencing of many genomes, providing information that permeates many sections of the book, and the availability of crystal structures, which in many cases replaces speculations about mechanism with detailed views.

A major change in presentation is made possible by the advent of the internet. A continuously updated version of GENES is maintained at www.ergito.com. Aside from some obvious differences in presentation, which allow the reader to customize a variety of views, the web version cites references within the text (compared with at the end of each chapter in the print version), and of course the citations are hyperlinked to original source material wherever possible. In these circumstances, I do not regard publications in journals that neither adopt this policy nor are widely available (often because they are unreasonably expensive) as legitimate contributions to the scientific literature. I see no point in citing publications to which many readers will not have access. References are cited at the end of each chapter, organized by sections, and are classed into reviews (rev), research articles (ref), and accounts by authors of classic experiments on the ergito web site (exp).

Molecular biology can be easy to learn

I have been using Genes VIII for a year already in my Molecular Biology studies and I should state that this is one of the best books written in this field.

First of all, the material is structured in a clear manner. Moreover all terms are introduced starting from simple things, which become harder and harder as you proceed. That gives the student the opportunity to form the overall picture of molecular biological processes.

Besides, each chapter starts with the introduction that is very useful when you want to review the things (i.e. before the exam).

In my opinion this book contains a lot of visual material that definitely helps students to understand the material more thoroughly.

To sum up, I would recommend everybody who wants to explore the world of Molecular Biology to buy this book.

One of the best

This text is a vast improvement on the previous editions. Its improved vastly on both clarity and content. The figures themselves are excellent learning tools. Combined with uptodate material, it is in my opinion peerless. Its rivals would be lodish and alberts but in some areas complements them and often outshines them. The textbook exists online at ergito.com and you could subcribe for the duration of your course. The website gives you access to the complete material in the print text and you also save a ton of money by subscribing for a shorter period, that is if you find cash an issue. However, I wholeheartedly recommend the print edition as a trusted companion for those embarking on graduate studies.

A great book on biology

Dr. Lewin's work has helped me understand biology and improve my understanding of the sciences. The design and figures in Genes are wonderfully clear, as is the general body of the text.

Furthermore, his website at ergito.com has some great supplemental material on the important procedures of science and past experiments that have changed sciences.

Between the Genes book and the subscription to Ergito, Dr. Lewin's work is a great opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge. I thought Genes VIII was great, and a good step forward from Genes VII.
