Engineering Management: Challenges in the Near Millennium prepares engineers to fulfill their managerial responsibilities, acquire useful business perspectives, and take on the much needed leadership roles to meet the new challenges in the decades ahead. These challenges will include satisfying customer demand with faster, cheaper and better products and services, managing an increasingly diversified workplace, creating and managing global supply chains, applying web-based management/engineering techniques to develop and sustain competitive advantages, and leading in creativity and innovation by transforming emerging technologies into business success.

Engineers with excellent managerial skills and superior business acumen are needed to lead corporate America in the new century. As the economy grows increasingly global, technologies advance at a faster pace, and the marketplace becomes more dynamic. Consequently, countless industrial companies will need technically trained engineers to turn technological innovations into profitability.

The need for engineering management training is obvious from another point of view. The National Science Foundation estimated in 2000 that about 46 percent of American engineers and scientists were actively working in managerial and administrative capacities. This managerial percentage remained more or less constant across the age groups from under 35 to over 55 years old. As the trend continues, almost one out of every two engineers or scientists will be engaged in managing people, projects, teams, technology, and other resources to add value to their companies.

This book prepares engineers to fulfill their managerial responsibilities, acquire useful business perspectives, and take on much-needed leadership roles to meet the challenges in the new millennium.

A number of themes permeate the book. Value addition, customer focus, and business perspectives are emphasized throughout. Also underlined are discussions of leadership attributes, steps to acquire these attributes, the areas in which engineering managers are expected to add value, the Web-based tools that can be aggressively applied to develop and sustain competitive advantages, the vital tasks of e-transformation, the opportunities offered by market expansion into global regions, and the preparations required for engineering managers to become global leaders.

The book is intended for undergraduate seniors majoring in such disciplines as aerospace, biomedical, chemical, computer, electrical, mechanical, industrial, and systems engineering and for first-year graduate engineering students. The book may also be used as a self-study guide by engineering professionals who aspire to become managers. It should be of value to first-time engineering supervisors or managers who are interested in further advancing their careers along the managerial career path.

The book is organized to contain three major parts: (I) "Functions of Engineering Management," (II) "Business Fundamentals for Engineering Managers," and (III) "Engineering Leadership in the New Millennium."

Part I introduces the basic functions of engineering management such as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These functions provide engineers and engineering managers with foundation skills to manage themselves, staff, teams, projects, technologies, and global issues of importance.

Best practices are emphasized as pertinent standards for goal setting and performance measurement. Engineering managers solve problems and minimize conflicts to achieve the company's objectives. They make rational decisions and take lawful and ethical actions. They employ Monte Carlo methods to assess projects that involve risks and uncertainties. Engineering managers engage emerging technologies, motivate a professional workforce of diverse backgrounds, advance new generations of products and services in a timely manner, and constantly surpass the best practices in the industry.

Furthermore, in this book, the roles of engineering managers in strategic planning, employee selection, team building, delegating, decision making, and the management of creativity and innovation are explained. The development of managerial competencies is emphasized.

Part II covers the fundamentals of engineering management, including cost accounting, financial accounting and analysis, managerial finance, and marketing management. This part is constructed to enable engineers and engineering managers to acquire a broadened perspective with respect to the business and stakeholders of the company and to facilitate their interaction with peer groups and units.

The book also prepares engineering managers to make decisions related to cost, finance, products, services, and capital budgets. Discounted cash flow and internal rate of return analyses are reviewed. These deliberations are of critical importance, as decisions made during the product-design phase typically determine up to 85 percent of the final costs of products. Additional deliberations are presented regarding activity-based costing (ABC) to define indirect costs related to products and services and economic value added (EVA) to determine the real profitability of an enterprise or project above and beyond the cost of capital deployed.

Also introduced is capital formation through equity and debt financing, along with resource allocation concepts based on adjusted present value (APV) for assets in place and option pricing for capital investment opportunities. By appreciating the project evaluation criteria and the tools of financial analyses, engineers and engineering managers will be in a better position to win project approvals. A critical step to developing technological projects is the acquisition and incorporation of customer feedback. For managers to lead, the foremost challenges are indeed the initiation, development, and implementation of major technological projects that contribute to the long-term profitability of the company.

The important roles and responsibilities of marketing in any profit-seeking enterprise are then clarified, along with the supporting contributions expected of engineering managers. Numerous progressive enterprises are increasingly concentrating on customer relationship management to grow their business. Such a customer orientation is expected to continue to serve as a key driving force for product design, project management, plant operations, manufacturing, customer service, and a variety of other engineering-centered activities.

Part III addresses five major topics: engineers as managers and leaders, ethics in engineering and business management, Web-based enablers for engineering and management, globalization, and engineering management in the new millennium. These discussions provide additional building blocks to enhance the preparation for engineers and engineering managers to assume technology leadership positions and to meet the challenges of the new millennium.

Engineers are known to possess a strong set of skills that enable them to do extraordinarily well in certain types of managerial work. However, some engineers may also exhibit weaknesses that prevent them from becoming effective leaders in engineering organizations or even from being able to survive as engineers in the industry. The expected norms of effective leaders are described. Steps enabling engineering managers to enhance their leadership qualities and attune themselves to the value-centered business acumen are explained. Certain outlined steps should be of great value to those engineering managers who want to become better prepared to build new products and services based on technology, to integrate technology into organizations, and to lead technology-based organizations.

Many tried-and-true rules are included that serve as suitable guidelines for engineering managers to become excellent leaders. Above all, engineering managers are expected to point the way with a vision of how to apply company core competencies to add value, to have insight into how to capture opportunities offered by the emerging technologies, and to be innovative in making products and services better, faster, and cheaper, so that they constantly improve customer satisfaction. Also deliberated are the concepts of value addition, customer focus, time to market, mass customization, supply chains, enterprise resources integration, and others.

Although engineers are known to be ranked high in trustworthiness and integrity (ahead of businessmen, bankers, certified public accountants, lawyers, and others), it is important for all engineers and engineering managers to remain vigilant in observing a code of ethics, to uphold a high standard of honesty and integrity, and to become sensitive to other topics related to ethics.

The changes wrought by the Internet are transforming most aspects of company business, including information dissemination, product distribution, and customer service. As processor design, software programming, and transmission hardware technologies continue to advance, their roles in business will surely grow and affect various functions of engineering management in the future. Progressive engineering managers need to know what Web-based enablers of engineering and management are currently available and which ones can be applied effectually to promote product customization, expedite new products to market, align supply chains, optimize inventory, foster team creativity and innovation, and upgrade customer service. Presented in considerable detail is a comprehensive set of Web-based tools related to product design, manufacturing, project management, procurement, plant operations, knowledge management, and supply-chain management.

Globalization expands the perspectives of engineers and engineering managers further with respect to divergence in culture, business practices, and value. Globalization is a major business trend that will affect innumerable enterprises in the coming decades. Engineers and engineering managers must become sensitized to the issues associated with globalization. They must prepare themselves to contribute to those enterprises wishing to capture new business opportunities offered in the global emerging markets. They need to be aware of the potential effects of job migration due to globalization and to take steps to prepare themselves to meet such challenges. I obviously did not buy this book by choice (it was part of a graduate school class I was taking). Nevertheless, I have to say the book is very well organized and the ideas well presented. Definitely a book I recommend for the Engineering Management professional.

This book is very specific and to the point. Enough information to cover what engineering management is. The size of the book is space friendly but be careful whit the pages since the paper is extremely fragil, "read it away from water".

About the Author
Sarah Lynn's three young sons taught her how to race toy cars. Together they?ve used their imaginations to create roads everywhere (couch, kitchen floor, dirt, sand, rug, and the bathtub, just for starters.) The idea for 1-2-3 Va-Va-Vroom! came to Sarah when she was teaching her oldest son to write numbers. They began imagining the pencil as a car drawing its own track. Those vroom-vroom sounds made writing numbers so much more fun. Sarah is also the author of Tip-Tap Pop, illustrated by Valeria Docampo. She lives with her family in Camarillo, California.

Great Book and DVD

I have been teaching two people with their Citizenship application and test and interview. This book is packed with great information. The DVD is INVALUABLE. Do not just read and work your way through the book. Use the DVD !!!! The book and the DVD very well thought out and you can tell that the authors know what they are doing.

I tried to develop teaching methods and tricks on my own, only to discover when I really started reading the book closely and using the DVD that the authors had already thought of all my supposedly bright and clever and original ideas !!!!

Great book and DVD and well worth money. Make sure !!! you get the DVD in your purchase.

A robust product is not just strong; it is also efficient, flexible, mistake-proof, and affordable. The term engineering robust products encompasses design and process flexibility, which rapidly and affordably accommodate changing customer requirements. As an engineer and an engineering manager, I have worked for the power utility, aerospace, transportation, automotive, and appliance industries.

I have had the privilege to witness the essential needs and challenges of developing dependable power supplies, reliable manned-flight vehicles, low-emission transportation systems, high-efficiency cars, and cost-competitive appliances.

Engineers need to consider many factors when developing new products. For example, in developing a hybrid car, engineers determine precisely what function it needs to perform; design and test the components; fit the components together in an integrated plan; and evaluate the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, serviceability, and safety. This process applies to many different products such as magnetic resonance imaging equipment, the Internet, gas turbines, helicopters, and even toy gyrocopters. Within the next decade, emerging technologies will make possible novel applications that integrate computation into design, manufacturing, and application environments: smart materials, self-reconfiguring robots, self-assembling nanostructures. Companies often face the challenge of achieving coherent and robust behavior from the interactions of a multitude of components and their interaction with design, manufacturing, and application. The new environments highlight the limits of current engineering practices and techniques, which are still highly dependent on precision parts and controlled processes to make products dependable and reliable.

The goal of engineering robust products is to deliver what customers expect at an affordable cost regardless of usage; degradation over product life; and variation in manufacturing, suppliers, distribution, delivery, installation, and service. The use of Dr. Genichi Taguchi's robust design principles (1987) allows experiments to be performed and prototypes to be tested on multiple factors at once so that products become insensitive to usage conditions and other uncontrollable factors. Because randomness and scatter are a part of reality everywhere, Six Sigma (SS) techniques are becoming necessary to design quality into products. Six Sigma quality describes a highly robust product development and manufacturing process. Achieving SS quality ensures both dependable products and production efficiency.

This book's title, Engineering Robust Products with Six Sigma, emphasizes the use of a disciplined process in conjunction with a robust product design. The appropriate application of robust engineering principles with the Six Sigma process enables development programs to quickly deliver high-quality, low-cost products that fully meet customers' needs. The use of Six Sigma to engineer robust products bridges the gap between research and development, invention and innovation, and product and/or process development. Contrary to the other reviewers, I found the book to be outstanding! A possible reason for the different view is that I had studied linear algebra before. This books needs to be read and followed carefully and thoroughly- it is comprehensive and explains what is 'really going on' in the realm of linear algebra. Basic ideas, theorems and computational methods are presented with clear examples and pictures illustrating the geometry involved.
It is clearly not a 'cookbook' that one reads quickly to find the recipe for passing a course.

For me, the conciseness was a plus!

It looks like some of the reviewers here disagree with me, but I think this textbook is excellent. The explanations and examples are generally very clear, and there isn't a lot of distracting nonsense. In many textbooks they try too hard to teach through "Real World" examples. i find such examples confusing because they obscure the math behind the example.
I also felt this book had a nice mix of easy, medium and challenging problems. And it feels like the author really understands and strives to clarify many of the hurdles faced by Linear Algebra students.
Make no mistake about it, Linear Algebra is a tough class that requires a lot of dilligence and abstract thinking. This book isn't going to guarantee you an A. But if you work through it, and if you have a helpful teacher, you'll be on the right track.
By the way, I am a Computer Science major, and while I consider myself decent at math, I'm by no means a math genius. :)

Almost everything I dislike in a textbook

This book has many characteristics that I really dislike to see in a textbook.

First, the authors flooded almost every page with extraneous information. When you're learning this stuff, you want it to be explained simply and clearly - but the authors seem more intent on showing you how much they know about some topic, even when that information is tangenital and not very helpful.

They don't word things clearly. They'll call the same thing by two different names - (i.e. "Pension Cost" and "Pension Expense") which needlessly adds to the confusion. They'll discuss some topic for several pages without even writing down the basic, relevant journal entry.

One of the wordiest, most poorly written accounting books I have ever had the displeasure of studying from.

Good content, not a fan of a text book in a binder

This review is not of the content; this is a required textbook for the CFP curriculum at my college, and it seems good (at least my professor thinks so).

I'm NOT a fan of the way this textbook is constructed. Or not constructed, I should say. This version is not bound; it comes punched for a 3-ring binder. I already have some pages that have the holes torn; I'm just hoping it survives the semester.

I bought this book for a course. The price is incredible because it is a new binder edition and it costs as much as a used hardcover edition. So I would definitely recommend this book.

About the Author
David Arnold is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Warwick, and previously taught at the University of Dar es Salaam, the University of Lancaster, and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. A founder member of the Subaltern Studies group, he has been a visiting professor in Chicago and Zurich, and is a Fellow of the British Academy. His published work includes Colonizing the Body: State Medicine and Epidemic Disease in Nineteenth-Century India; Science, Technology and Medicine in Colonial India; Gandhi; The Tropics and the Traveling Gaze: India, Landscape, and Science, 1800 1856, and Everyday Technology: Machines and the Making of India's Modernity.

This book started in 1993, when the first author began to reorganize the teaching of ODEs at Rice University. It soon became apparent that a textbook was needed that brought to the students the expanded outlook that modern developments in the subject required, and the use of technology allowed. Over the ensuing years this book has evolved.

The mathematical subject matter of this book has not changed dramatically from that of many books published ten or even twenty years ago. The book strikes a balance between the traditional and the modern. It covers all of the traditional material and somewhat more. It does so in a way that makes it easily possible, but not necessary, to use modern technology, especially for the visualization of the ideas involved in ordinary differential equations. It offers flexibility of use that will allow instructors at a variety of institutions to use the book. In fact, this book could easily be used in a traditional differential equations course, provided the instructor carefully chooses the exercises assigned. However, there are changes in our students, in our world, and in our mathematics that require some changes in the ODE course, and the way we teach it.

Our students are now as likely to be majoring in the biological sciences or economics as in the physical sciences or engineering. These students are more interested in systems of equations than they are in second order equations. They are also more interested in applications to their own areas rather than to physics or engineering.

Our world is increasingly a technological world. In academia we are struggling with the problem of adapting to this new world. The easiest way to start a spirited discussion in a group of faculty is to raise the subject of the use of technology in our teaching. Regardless of one's position on this subject, it is widely agreed that the course where the use of technology makes the most sense, and where the impact of computer visualization is the most beneficial, is in the study of ODES. The use of computer visualization pervades this book. The degree to which the student and the instructor are involved is up to the instructor.

The subject of ordinary differential equations has progressed, as has all of mathematics. To many it is now known by the new name, dynamical systems. Much of the progress, and many of the directions in which the research has gone, have been motivated by computer experiments. Much of the work is qualitative in nature. This is beautiful mathematics. Introducing some of these ideas to students at an early point is a move in the right direction. It gives them a better idea of what mathematics is about than the standard way of discussing one solution method after another. It should be emphasized that the introduction of qualitative methods is not, in itself, a move to less rigor.

The Use of Technology

The book covers the standard material with an appropriate level of rigor. However, it enables the instructor to be flexible in the use of modern technology. Available to all, without the use of any technology, is the large number of graphics in the book that display the ideas in ODEs. At the next level are a large number of exercises that require the student to compute and plot solutions. For these exercises, the student will have to have access to computer (or calculator) programs that will do this easily.

The tools needed for most of these exercises are two. The student will need a program that will plot the direction field for a single differential equation, and superimpose the solution with given initial conditions. In addition, the student will need a program that will plot the vector field for an autonomous planar system of equations, and superimpose the solution with given initial conditions. Such tools are available in MATLAB, Maple, and Mathematica. For many purposes it will be useful for the students to have computer (or calculator) tools for graphing functions of a single variable.

The book can also be used to teach a course in which the students learn numerical methods early and are required to use them regularly throughout the course. Students in such a course learn the valuable skill of solving equations and systems of equations numerically and interpreting the results using the subject matter of the course. The treatment of numerical methods is somewhat more substantial than in other books. However, just enough is covered so that readers get a sense of the complexity involved. Computational error is treated, but not so rigorously as to bog the reader down and interrupt the flow of the text. Students are encouraged to do some experimental analysis of computational error.

Modeling and Applications

It is becoming a common feature of mathematics books to include a large list of applications. Usually the students are presented with the mathematical model and they are required to apply it to a variety of cases. The derivation of the model is not done. There is some sense in this. After all, mathematics does not include all of the many application areas, and the derivation of the models is the subject of the application areas. Furthermore, the derivations are very time consuming.

However, mathematicians and mathematics are part of the modeling process. It should be a greater part of our teaching. This book takes a novel approach to the teaching of modeling. While a large number of applications are covered as examples, in some cases the applications are covered in more detail than is usual. There is a historical study of the models of motion, which demonstrates to students how models continue to evolve as knowledge increases. There is an in-depth study of several population models, including their derivation. Included are historical examples of how such models were applied both where they were appropriate and where they were not. This demonstrates to students that it is necessary to understand the assumptions that lie behind a model before using them, and that any model must be checked by experiments or observations before it is accepted.

In addition, models in personal finance are discussed. This is an area of potential interest to all students, but not one that is covered in any detail in college courses. Students majoring in almost all disciplines approach these problems on an even footing. As a result it is an area where students can be required to do some modeling on their own.

Linear Algebra and Systems

Most books at this level assume that students have an understanding of elementary matrix algebra, usually in two and three dimensions. In the experience of the authors this assumption is not valid. Accordingly, this book devotes a chapter to matrix algebra. The topics covered are carefully chosen to be those needed in the study of linear systems of ODEs. With this chapter behind them, the instructor can cover linear systems of ODEs in a more substantive way. On the other hand an instructor who is confident in the knowledge of the students can skip the matrix algebra chapter.

Projects

There are a number of projects discussed in the book. These involve students in an in-depth study of either mathematics or an application that uses ODEs. The projects provide students with the opportunity to bring together much of what they have learned, including analytical, computational, and interpretative skills. The level of difficulty of the projects varies. More projects will be made available to users of this book as they are developed.

Varied Approaches Possible

It should be noticed that the book has three authors from three very different schools. The ODE courses at these institutions are quite different. Indeed, there is no standard ODE course across the country. The authors set the understandable goal of writing a book that could be used in the ODE courses at each of their own institutions. Meeting this goal required some compromises, but the result is a book that is flexible enough to allow its use in a variety of courses at a variety of institutions.

On one hand, it is possible to use the book and teach a more or less standard course. The standard material is covered in the standard order, with or without the use of technology.

However, at Rice University, after the first three chapters the class moves to numerical methods, and then to matrix algebra. This is followed by linear systems. Once this material is covered, higher-order equations, including the second-order equations that are important in science and engineering, are covered as examples of systems. This approach allows the students to use linear algebra throughout the course, thereby gaining a working knowledge of the subject. Technology is used throughout to enhance the students' understanding of the mathematical ideas.

In another approach, used at College of the Redwoods, the chapter on numerical methods is done early, while discussing the qualitative analysis of single first-order equations. The students are taught the analytical, qualitative, and numerical approaches before moving on to Chapter 3. The chapter on matrix algebra is covered next. There follows an introduction of systems, both linear and nonlinear. Next, they return to second-order equations, including undetermined coefficients, the driven, damped oscillator, resonance, and so forth. The course ends with more on nonlinear systems. The ultimate goal is to get the students to use nullcline analysis and the Jacobian approximation to sketch a phase portrait without the use of software.

Mathematical Rigor

Mathematical ideas are not dodged. Proofs are given when the proof will add to the students' understanding of the material. Difficult proofs, or those that do not add to a student's understanding, are avoided. Suggestions of how to proceed, and examples that use these suggestions, are usually offered as motivation before one has to wade through the abstraction of a proof. The authors believe that proof is fundamental to mathematics, and that students at this level should be introduced gently to proof as an integral part of their training in mathematics. This is true for the future engineer or doctor as well as for the math major.

Instructors who use this book will have available a number of resources. There are an Instructor's Solution Manual, containing the complete solutions to all of the exercises, and a Student's Solution Manual with the solutions to the odd-numbered exercises.

One way to meet the software needs of the student is to use the programs dfield and pplane, written by the first author for use with MATLAB. These programs are described in the book Ordinary Differential Equations Using MATLAB (ISBN 0-13-011381-6), written by two of the authors of this book. That book is available shrink-wrapped with this one at no extra cost (ISBN 0-13-059318-4). However, it should be emphasized that it is not necessary to use dfield and pplane with this book. There are many other possibilities.

An Elementary Approach

I recently used this textbook in a sophomore-level Differential Equations course at UCLA, where I am majoring in Mathematics.

If you are looking for a relatively breezy introduction to Differential Equations, or are taking a course in the subject merely to fulfill a requirement or prerequisite at your school, this text is probably about as good as it gets. Contrary to many of the reviewers on this site, I found the book to be user-friendly almost to a fault; more so even than Stewart's Calculus. Topics in this book are treated cursorily, and emphasis is primarily on algorithmic problem solving.

On the other hand, were I studying this topic on my own, I would not choose this book. For one, exercises are relegated nearly entirely to the application of a procedure outlined in a given chapter, and it was only very rarely that I came across one which was challenging even after taking a glance back through the preceding section (and I did a lot of exercises). Though I feel that the chapters themselves are a bit elementary, I can't fault the authors too much for that; the book is after all an introduction.

After thoroughly studying this book, I do feel that I have a mechanical competency in the basic forms of differential equations treated in the text. That is, I am comfortable with the techniques covered, and I am familiar with a few new ideas. I suppose I can't ask for much more in an introduction, but I somehow feel that my time would have been better spent struggling with a text that was slightly beyond my grasp than mastering one that is well within it.

Clear introduction of the basics, suitable for self-study

Pace the many negative reviews, as an autodidact who studies for pleasure (i.e. am under no pressure to pass tests or learn the material for a career), I found the first edition of Polking, Boggess & Arnold (2001, ISBN Differential Equations) well-organized, clear and amply illustrated with examples and diagrams. Polking might have serious limitations for students, as many of the reviews have detailed, but in my view, if you're studying for fun, this is a wonderful book to learn the basics of ordinary differential equations. It has definitely helped me understand the physics books I'm studying, which was my goal. When I'm studying physics and have gotten stuck with some differential equation, I've often found it easy to get the help I need from Polking so I can get back on track.

In contrast to Tannenbaum, which is a typical Dover small font, no frills publication, Polking is nicely produced and has nice graphics, making it a pleasure to read. Of course, if you have a need or inclination to achieve a deeper understanding of the differential equations, then Polking will not suffice. That's when I'd turn to Tannenbaum, which provides a lot more theory.

Overall, Polking is fine for self-study. The 2nd ed might be even better (or worse) but since I don't have it, I wouldn't know.

Worst math textbook I have ever used

This is by far the worst math textbook I have ever been required to use for a class. They don't highlight, or make stand out, the key ideas, equations, theorems, and proofs enough and when they do, they do a poor job. In most examples, they will skip whole parts of solving the equation and assume that the student knows exactly what they are doing when they don't show what they are doing. For example, they'll say something like, by algebra and integration we get the answer blah. Why don't they show the algebra and integration!? They don't have enough proofs and examples and make some of the concepts way more hard and complicated than they should be. Normally, I wouldn't have much of a problem with this textbook, because I leave it up to the teacher to teach and I just use the textbook for the exercises and sometimes to double-check on certain ideas and concepts and methods, but for the format for the class, (called "flipped classroom"- basically students read textbook, watch videos, do homework, then next class time the teacher gives a short abbreviated lecture while answering questions- it seems like a horrible format, but is surprisingly effective), a lot of the initial learning of material comes from just reading the text book.
Overall, if there is somehow a way for you not to have to use this textbook, do it! This text book is the worst.
