This solutions manual gives in depth answers to all odd numbered problems for Introoductory Linear Algebra 8/E. Especially helpful are the answers to the theorectical problems. It is easy to extrapolate the proofs from the odd numbered problems to the even numbered problems. It is also very easy to check your work and the step by step solutions allow you to quickly find any errors in your calculations.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone serious about in-depth study.

This book is a scam

My friend used Management Information Sustems: Managing the Digital Firm 8th edition. Now that I received this one I can see that 95% of of the content in the new book is identical to the one my friend has. Oh, right, the authors also added to the title the words "essentials of" Management...

I can believe the publisher let the authors publish this kind of book. A previous review says that the book is almost identical to the previous edition of the same book. Now I am saying that the book is almost identical to a different book writen by the same authors...this is outrageous.

Ah, yes. The cases at the end of the chapters are different

I 'was forced' to buy this book for an MIS course. We all know how textbooks are scams anyway, but this one takes the cake. My college even had the balls to 'bundle' this with an MS Access book so we were stuck with a $170 bundle. All the info I needed to take the course was available on the website webct. If you can find a way to access that site, you don't even need this outrageously expensive book. I got an A in the course and never cracked the book. I just used the info on the website. You should try that route if you can, and forgo purchasing this book.

About the Author

Allen R. Angel received his AAS in Electrical Technology from New York City Community College. He then received his BS in Physics and his MS in Mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz, and he took additional graduate work at Rutgers University. He is Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York where he served for many years as the chair of the Mathematics Department. He also served as the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Rutgers University from 1967—73. He served as the President of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) and the Northeast Vice President of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). He is the recipient of many awards including a number of NISOD Excellence in Teaching Awards, NYSMATYC's Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award, and AMATYC's President Award. Allen enjoy tennis, worldwide travel, and visiting with his children and granddaughter.

8th edition of this book

This book is an assigned book at MCC for the 098 Math course. Likewise the Intermediate book by this same author is for their 104 Math Course. This comes as no suprise since the author was the head of the mathematics department many years ago at MCC.

This review is for the Elementary Algebra book

This book has too much going on it. It is very confusing. Visually its like they spent time trying to make it look good versus giving you the information you require to do math correctly. The overusage of colors throughout the book makes it very distracting to the reader. Many things are in orange, yellow and blue making it very distracting with all of the callouts it the equivalent of an obstacle course in a textbook.

Many of the examples shown in the book lack critical information needed to complete all the problems at the end of the section. For instance in some of the examples they will show you how to do a certain problem, for example say x 1/2 +8x - y. In the examples they do not explain what to do when you have a variable in front of a fraction on a problem such as this. Their is no place to reference it. So this book only partially teaches you what you need to know. As you go through the section questions you will find that many of the questions do not have examples that can even be remotely used as a basis for what to do with the problem you are trying to solve. The book does not take a logical approach either.

I find that the book also has issues where what they are asking you questions on isn't taught until the next section which makes me ask if you havent been taught something yet how can you possibly answer it. This only further leads to anxiety over math.

Many times the teachers will tell you to get the student solution manual if you do not understand the book. This is an added cost and I believe a way for the book publisher to make more money along with the college. If you buy a book to learn from it should be written well enough that you should not need a seperate book. Also if all the information was contained in the book like it should be, you should also not need the solution manual.

The older versions of this book may have been better but the 8th edition is a disaster. The videos they reference in the book are from several years ago and have not been updated to reflect the examples in the book (where they have a camera icon). These icons are used to show the reader that their is a video for that particular math problem.

About the Author

James S. Walker. James Walker obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Washington in 1978. He subsequently served as a post-doc at the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California at San Diego before joining the physics faculty at Washington State University in 1983. Professor Walker's research interests include statistical mechanics, critical phenomena, and chaos. His many publications on the application of renormalization-group theory to systems ranging from absorbed monolayers to binary-fluid mixtures have appeared in Physical Review, Physical Review Letters, Physica, and a host of other publications. He has also participated in observations on the summit of Mauna Kea, looking for evidence of extra-solar planets.

Jim Walker likes to work with students at all levels, from judging elementary school science fairs to writing research papers with graduate students, and has taught introductory physics for many years. His enjoyment of this course and his empathy for students have earned him a reputation as an innovative, enthusiastic, and effective teacher. Jim's educational publications include "Reappearing Phases" (Scientific American, May 1987) as well as articles in the American Journal of Physics and The Physics Teacher. In recognition of his contributions to the teaching of physics, Jim was named Boeing Distinguished Professor of Science and Mathematics Education for 2001-2003.

When he is not writing, conducting research, teaching, or developing new classroom demonstrations and pedagogical materials, Jim enjoys amateur astronomy, bird watching, photography, juggling, unicycling, boogie boarding, and kayaking. Teaching introductory algebra-based physics can be a most challenging—and rewarding—experience. Students enter the course with a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and skills and we, the instructors, strive not only to convey the basic concepts and fundamental laws of physics, but also to give students an appreciation of its relevance and appeal.

I wrote this book to help with that task. It incorporates a number of unique and innovative pedagogical features that evolved from years of teaching experience. The materials have been tested extensively in the classroom and in focus groups, and refined based on comments from students and teachers who used the first edition. The enthusiastic response I received from users of the first edition was both flattering and motivating. The second edition has been enhanced and enriched in response to this feedback.

Learning Tools in the Text

A key goal of this text is to help students make the connection between a conceptual understanding of physics and the various skills necessary to solve quantitative problems. One of the chief means to that end is the replacement of traditional "textbook". Examples with an integrated suite of learning tools: fully worked Examples with Solutions in Two-Column Format, Active Examples, Conceptual Checkpoints, and Exercises. Each of these tools performs some of the functions of a standard Example, but each is specialized to meet the needs of students at a particular point in the development of a chapter.

These needs are not always the same. Sometimes students require a detailed explanation of how to tackle a particular problem; at other times, they must be allowed to take an active role and work out the details for themselves. Sometimes it is important for them to perform calculations and concentrate on numerical precision; at other times it is more fruitful for them to explore a key idea in a conceptual context. And sometimes, all that is required is practice using a new equation or definition.

A good teacher can sense when students need a patient, step-by-step exposition and when they need only minimal reinforcement; when they need to focus on concepts and when they need an opportunity to practice their quantitative skills. This text attempts to emulate the teaching style of successful instructors by providing the right tool at the right time and place.

Worked Examples with Solutions in Two-Column Format

Examples model the most complete and detailed method of solving a particular type of problem. The Examples in this text are presented in a format that focuses on the basic strategies and thought processes involved in problem solving. The aim of this approach is to help students first visualize the situation, devise a strategy to be followed, and then implement a clear step-by-step solution to the problem. This focus on the intimate relationship between conceptual insights and problem-solving techniques encourages students to view the ability to solve problems as a logical outgrowth of conceptual understanding rather than a kind of parlor trick.

Each Example has the same basic structure:

  • Picture the Problem. This first step discusses how the physical situation can be represented visually and what such a representation can tell us about how to analyze and solve the problem. At this step, always accompanied by a figure, we set up a coordinate system where appropriate, label important quantities, and indicate which values are known. The Picture the Problem steps have been enhanced in the second edition to make them more instructive.
  • Strategy. Closely linked with this visualization process is the formulation of a Strategy to be followed in solving the problem. The strategy addresses the commonly asked question, "How do I get started?" by providing a clear overview of the problem and helping students to identify the relevant physical principles. It then guides the student in using known relationships to map a step-by-step path to the solution.
  • Solution in Two Column Format. In the step-by-step Solution of the problem, each of the steps is presented with a prose statement in the left-hand column and the corresponding mathematical implementation in the right-hand column. Each step clearly translates the idea described in words into the appropriate equations. When reviewing an Example, note that the left-hand column gives the flow of ideas used in the solution; the right-hand column gives the mathematical calculations that were carried out.
  • Insight. Each Example wraps up with an Insight—a comment regarding the solution just obtained. Some Insights deal with possible alternative solution techniques, others with new ideas suggested by the results.
  • Practice Problem. Following the Insight is a Practice Problem, which gives the student a chance to practice the type of calculation just presented. The Practice Problems, always accompanied by their answers, provide students with a valuable check on their understanding of the material. Finally, each Example ends with a reference to some related end-of-chapter problems to allow students to test their skills further.
Active Examples

Active Examples serve as a bridge between the fully worked Examples, in which every detail is fully discussed and every step is given, and the homework Problems, where no help is given at all. In an Active Example, students take an active role in solving the problem by thinking through the logic of the steps described on the left and checking their answers on the right. Students often find it useful to practice problem solving by covering one column of an Active Example with a sheet of paper and filling in the covered steps as they refer to the other column. In the second edition, follow-up questions, called Your Turns, ask students to look at the problem in a slightly different way. Answers to Your Turns, are provided at the end of the book. Working through Active Examples will make students better prepared to tackle homework problems on their own.

Conceptual Checkpoints

Conceptual Checkpoints help students sharpen their insight into key physical principles. A typical Conceptual Checkpoint presents a thought-provoking question that can be answered by logical reasoning based on physical concepts rather than by numerical calculations. These questions, which can be just as challenging as any numerical problem and just as educational, are presented in multiple-choice format to help focus the student's thinking. The statement of the question is followed by a detailed discussion and analysis in the section titled Reasoning and Discussion, and the Answer is given at the end of the checkpoint for quick and easy reference.

Exercises

Exercises present brief calculations designed to illustrate the application of important new relationships, without the expenditure of time and space required by a fully worked Example. Exercises generally give students an opportunity to practice the use of a new equation, become familiar with the units of a new physical quantity, and get a feeling for typical magnitudes.

Problem Solving Notes

In addition to the in-text elements just described, each chapter includes a number of marginal Problem Solving Notes. These practical hints are designed to highlight useful problem-solving methods while helping students avoid common pitfalls Remember to measure angles in radians and misconceptions.

End of Chapter Learning Tools

The end of chapter material in this text also includes a number of innovations, along with refinements of more familiar elements.

Chapter Summary

Each chapter concludes with a Chapter Summary presented in an easy-to-use outline style. Key concepts and equations are organized by topic for convenient reference.

Problem-Solving Summary

A unique feature of this text is the Problem-Solving Summary at the end of the chapter. This is a new type of summary that addresses common sources of misconceptions in problem solving, and gives specific references to Examples and Active Examples illustrating the correct procedures. Organized by type of problem, each entry in the Problem-Solving Summary relates a specific type of calculation to the relevant physical concepts.

Conceptual Questions

The homework for each chapter begins with a section of Conceptual Questions. Answers to the odd-numbered questions can be found in the back of the book, so that students can check their reasoning and conclusions. Answers to even-numbered Conceptual Questions are available in the Instructor's Solutions Manual.

Numerical and Integrated Homework Problems

A collection of numerical and Integrated Problems are presented at the end of each chapter. Note that a number of problems are given for each section of the chapter. In addition, a section titled "General Problems" presents a variety of problems that use material from two or more sections within the chapter, or refer to material covered in earlier chapters.

The difficulty of Problems is ranked using one, two, or three blue dots. The most straightforward Problems are labeled with a single dot (•), Problems involving several steps and more detailed reasoning are labeled with two dots (••), and Problems of a more challenging nature are indicated with three dots (•••).

A good first course

I first had physics in college twenty years ago. I was studying (at that time) astronomy and mathematics, so the first college-level physics class I took fully incorporated calculus and advanced mathematics. It was not until recently, as I took a position as tutor at a local community college, that I discovered a rigourous introductory physics text that did not involve calculus (only one semester of calculus is offered at the college, and usually taken concurrently with or after physics).

Walker's text, second edition, is the text we currently use. We offer one semester of physics, so we only get half-way through the text, which seems designed for a two-semester sequence. As the main focus of the college is technical, so the sections on mechanics, thermal physics and electromagnetism are the most essential sections for our degree programmes.

While this text does not assume calculus, it does assume basic trigonometry and analytic geometry. Dealing with angles and graphing are important skills to know here; dealing with vectors is introduced very early in the text, and continues to be very important throughout.

The book is well organised, with chapter summaries, problem-solving techniques summarised at the end of chapter, high concept questions, drawings, photographs, and real-world applications that relate the theory back to actual experience. From the light refraction in raindrops to the workings of the Global Positioning System, students will learn more about the interactions of the world from this text.

The examples follow a format that shows not only the worked solutions, but also the strategies employed to get to the solutions. Problems are pictured (after all, physics deals with real, substantial things), and conceptual considerations are explained (physics is largely story problems that need to be set up properly, after all). The insights and further considerations from the solutions are explored, and other practice problems are suggested (physics is always about going on to the next problem). The examples follow different categories - there are active examples, conceptual checkpoints, and real-world physics exercises.

The book is divided into five primary sections: Mechanics; Thermal Physics; Electromagnetism; Light and Optics; and Modern Physics. Mechanics largely deals with motion, introducing near the end ideas of gravity, sound, fluids and energy. This leads into Thermal Physics, the study of heat, temperature, and the laws of thermodynamics. Electromagnetism looks at electric force, charge, current, potential/potential energy, magnetism and flux. Light and Optics continues this with electromagnetic waves, proceeding to optical instruments and issues of interference and diffraction. The final section on Modern Physics deals with `fun stuff' like relativity, quantum physics, atomic and nuclear physics and radiation.

Like most texts, it comes with various supplements for students and teachers, computer-based and web-based. There are pocket companions and workbooks with solutions that can also be obtained, related to the text.

This is a good text for classroom study, and also a text for independent study. Some of the exercises are difficult to work through, but there are literally dozens (sometimes hundreds) after each chapter, so there is plenty on which to practice, and all the odd-numbered exercises have answers supplied.

Section 6.8 uses Fourier series to introduce the notion of representing a random process by a linear combination of deterministic functions weighted by random variables. It then proceeds to develop the Karhunen-Loeve expansion for vector random variables and then random processes.

Section 7.4 now contains a separate section on prediction and the Levinson algorithm.

Good Book

This is a good book for a subject that is simple but not easy. The author introduces the reader to fundamental concepts in probability with minimal mathematical abstraction and more examples than competing texts. This is the best book on the subject I have come across with the exception of the Schaum's Outline for probability and statistics.

Don't know why it's getting all these negative reviews...

...maybe I'm just dumb. This was the textbook for a senior/ first-year grad student EE probability course. I found it well-organized and well-written, with plenty of examples designed to illustrate and reinforce important concepts. I cannot answer as to its mathematical rigor, not being a mathematician, but as an engineer I found the derivations thorough (i.e., not a lot of skipped steps or hand waving). Yes, the homework problems at the end of the chapters were harder than the examples: aren't they supposed to be? And yes, not many answers were given in the back of the book, but the nature of the material is such that having the answer doesn't really help you. For worked problems, I highly recommend the Schaum's Outline (which saved my bacon on a number of homework problems).

I did very well in that course, and feel that reading this book gave me a firm grasp of the material.

Good book ... stop whining

I took Random Processes as an online course, and guess who was giving the lectures? The same Leon-Garcia. This is not a book for those who go to class, fall asleep during the lecture or spend the two hours thinking about what to do after class, hoping that then they can just open the book and understand everything just glancing over it. The book and the class lecture complement each other.

I didn't have any problem understanding 90% of the concepts explained in the book, although there are some examples that the book does not explain in detail, but they were thoroughly explained in the lectures.

So, depending how well your professor explained the concepts you could end up liking or hating this book. I like it. It is not perfect, but it is a good book to keep as reference.

    About the Author
    Ricky W. Griffin holds the Blocker Chair in Business Administration at Texas A&M University. He serves as Executive Associate Dean of the Mays College of Business and as professor of management at Texas A&M University. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Houston in 1978, he joined the faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia before moving to Texas A&M University in 1981. Professor Griffin teaches international management, organizational behavior, human resource management, and general management. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate students, participated in numerous executive training programs, and taught in Europe. A member of the Academy of Management, he has served as division chair of that group's Organizational Behavior division. Professor Griffin has written several successful textbooks, including Management, Organizational Behavior (with Greg Moorhead), and Business (with Ron Ebert). He is currently conducting research on workplace violence in Canada and job design differences and similarities among firms in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Michael Pustay is professor of management at Texas A&M University. He currently serves as associate director of the Center for International Business Studies and as associate director of the Center for International Business Education and Research at Texas A&M. He is the North American editor of the British journal Transport Reviews. Professor Pustay received his B.A. in economics summa cum laude from Washington and Lee University in 1969 and his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1973. He taught at Purdue University and Bowling Green State University prior to joining Texas A&M's business school faculty. Professor Pustay, who has taught international business for 12 years, focuses his teaching and research efforts on international business and business-government relations. His work has appeared in such professional journals as the Journal of Management, Southern Economic Journal, Land Economics, and Transportation Journal. He is currently researching the role of regional trading blocs on the world economy and the impact of domestic economic policies on international competition. Professor Pustay is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Academy of International Business, the American Economic Association, the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States, and the Transportation Research Forum. He has served as a consultant for a variety of public and private organizations, including the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Small Business Administration, the Civil Aeronautics Board, and Reliant Energy.

    Too much self-reference

    I had this book for one of my classes at my University this semester, and although the content of the book is concise and updated, nonetheless the authors rely too much on self-reference. The book is written too much from a "USA is superior" perspective. I also found some errors such as translations from other languages that were completely off. If you have to get this book for Intl. Business it is overall a good book, but if you can get a better one, do so.

    I am a student at Ferris State. My professor told us that he has had many books in his International Business class and that this one is by far the best and recommended that we keep it when the semester is over rather than sell it. It is very easy to follow and there are tons of interesting stories and graphics that go along with the reading. I like the book and I have been getting A's on all of my quizzes because it really is easy to understand and follow.
