Understanding Basic Human Behavior in the Workplace

"Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" has rightfully earned its reputation as a practical applied OD Classic! While traditional primary and secondary education emphasize building mental libraries of `theoretical knowledge,' Osland, Kolb, and Rubin recognize that working professionals learn through applicable experiences that address real-world challenges--thus, `an experiential approach.' I have successfully used lessons from "Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" during consulting engagements in both private and public sectors, in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, and in graduate business education. Consistently, through `experiential approaches' as described in "Organizational Behavior", adults learn more useful lessons from their experiences, learn what their lessons mean, learn how to generalize their learning for other applicable situations, AND apply more of their learning when they are back on the job. Experiential learning goes beyond merely increasing knowledge and actually changes individual (and organizational) behavior.

I highly recommend "Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach" for everyone working to achieve results through other people--and also for anyone seeking to better understand themselves and how they interact with other people.

An Experiential Approach describes this OB book well.

Osland, Kolb, and Rubin continue to make a fine book better. The buyer is well advised to think about the title before making a purchase. Organizational Behavior: an Experiential Approach makes clear that much of the text will be devoted to things like "Learning Style Inventories," "Thematic Apperception Tests," "Past Experience Inventories", "Active Listening Exercises," Case Studies, Role Plays, and the like. Many of these exercises may be easily completed and scored by the reader. Some, like the Thematic Apperception Test, are difficult for the reader to score accurately, but not impossible. Many of the exercises, such as active listening, require a partner, and some simulations require a larger group to complete the work.
The introductory text to the experiential exercises at the end of each chapter is well written and instructive. In a few words the authors make valuable points about perception, motivation, leadership, decision-making and problem solving, group work, and team development. They have in mind the professional manager who has on-the-job experience; a younger reader might find it difficult to relate to the tone and style of the book, which is aimed at a literate, educated, intelligent audience.
College professors, many of whom are a finicky lot, have adopted this book for their organizational behavior courses for over twenty years. That they continue to select this text is testimony to its enduring appeal and value.
For those readers who want a more conventional approach to the subject of organizational behavior, Stephen Robbins has written a variety of OB books that are comprehensive, readable, and even entertaining. Robbins covers more ground than Osland, but has less room for personal application of the material.
The reader who wants to learn from concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experiementation will find Organizational Behavior: an Experiential Approach an excellent resource for further study and application.

Global Leadership: The Next Generation is a summary of two years of knowledge acquisition, research, and interviews sponsored by Accenture and concluded in partnership with Marshall Goldsmith and his colleagues in the Alliance for Strategic Leadership. This book also builds upon valuable contributions by Warren Bennis and John O'Neil.

This book is unique. Instead of interviewing current CEOs and executives (who will not be running the organizations of the future), we interviewed future CEOs and executives who will be running the organizations of the future. What lies within these pages is written from the point of view of the next generation of global leaders. Accenture sponsored thought leader panels and focus and dialogue groups with high-potential leaders from around the world. In addition to these groups, more than 200 specially selected high-potential leaders from 120 international companies were interviewed in great depth. Since each company could nominate no more than two future leaders, these were some of the highest potential leaders in the world! Over three-fifths of these future leaders were under the age of 40, and more than a third were in their 20s. It is from research that the Global Leader of the Future Inventory, the basis for the chapters and sections of this book, was developed.

Leadership Can Be Learned

There has been an unprecedented surge of interest in business leadership in recent years, particularly in the qualities that the effective leader should possess now and in the future. With the shape of companies and the style of operation changing so fast, there is a natural concern that current leadership standards and styles are not keeping pace and will be still further behind in years to come. In markets of all sorts, leadership is getting tougher, particularly at the top: corporations grow in size and complexity; competition becomes ever sharper and stakeholders, more demanding.

Perhaps in consequence, leaders are staying in the top jobs for shorter and shorter periods. In some sectors, average tenures have halved over the past decade, perhaps due to stress, challenges, politics, health, or other reasons.

In the business context, the interaction between leader and led makes each combination unique. A simplistic, one-size-fits-all prescription can sometimes be valueless. But leadership can be learned, so we decided to conduct wide-ranging research to identify the many competencies, values, and characteristics that leaders and potential leaders must develop to meet not just present challenges, but the rather larger ones posed by the far-reaching changes expected in future corporate structures. Development lead times imply that companies must start the process right now if they are to be successful in developing the next generation of global leaders.

Many factors are transforming the context of leadership today: globalization and technological change lead to heightened competition, which in turn leads to new organizational models. Boundary integration, the result of alliances and mergers, technology, and globalization, as well as the emergence of a knowledge-based workforce so varied and different from its predecessors, place a relentless emphasis on innovation, adaptability, and collaboration. Information technology offers new working practices, but demands new strategies. These chaotic changes are leading to an ever-more complex business environment, full of leadership challenges.

Because no individual is likely to embody all of the needed and critical capabilities, and because the very nature of business organization--merged, allianced, outsourced, and virtual--is beginning to dictate it, shared leadership is expected to gain preeminence as the operating model of the future. In the future, there will be fewer "all-knowing" CEOs; instead, leadership will be widely shared in executive teams. New demands for collective responsibility and accountability for results will emerge, as will new competencies for sharing leadership. The sheer number of alliances and networks means that more than one person will lead these structures.

Effective leadership will be key to sustained business success. Current leaders are rightly concerned by their challenge in recruiting, training, and developing the leaders who will be needed in the future. The future leaders in our study see the value of these new competencies and are willing to have their performance measured by them. If future leaders have the wisdom to learn from the experience of present leaders, and if present leaders have the wisdom to learn new competencies from future leaders, both can share leadership in a way that ultimately benefits their organization.

Using This Book The Chapters

Each chapter of this book offers a description of one of the 15 dimensions of the effective global leader, as well as a resource section that includes action steps, additional resources, and suggested reading materials. The chapter text offers the authors' insights into the dimensions of leadership, as well as supportive quotes from our interviews, conducted by Maya Hu-Chan and Jeremy Solomons, with more than 200 high-potential leaders from 120 companies and organizations around the world. To protect the interviewees' anonymity, we have not used any names; however, we have included each respondent's industry, age, and country of employment and origin. (Please see Appendix B for a list of the interview questions.)

The resource section at the end of each chapter (signified by a gray bar at the side of the page) is designed to help you improve as a leader. To use the resource sections, follow the steps outlined below:

The Global Leader of the Future Inventory and Interview Questions

The Global Leader of the Future Inventory, included as an assessment tool, has been developed based on the further involvement of A4SL (Alliance for Strategic Leadership), Marshall Goldsmith, and Kim Jackson. The inventory as well as the interview questions used in our research phase to initiate discussions of leadership and to measure perceptions of the criticality and importance of selected global leadership dimensions for the past, present, and future have been revamped for use as assessment tools by the readers of this book. You will find the interview questions and inventory in Appendixes B and C respectively. • The initial U.S. strike on a bunker aiming to kill Saddam Hussein is unleashed hours after a U.S. deadline for the Iraqi president to leave the country expired. General Tommy Franks promises a "campaign unlike any in history" characterized by "shock, surprise, by flexibility, by the deployment of precision munitions on a scale never seen before, and by overwhelming force."

• The invasion of Iraq is launched. U.S. and British forces take southern cities and secure oil fields. They encounter stiffer than expected resistance. There is no immediate jubilation or welcome for troops due to the Iraqi security apparatus. There are firefights, helicopter accidents, air attacks on Baghdad, a U.S. serviceman attacks fellow soldiers and POWs are paraded.

• A fierce sandstorm slows the military sprint. There are ambushes, friendly fire incidents and a long, vulnerable column looks exposed. Hard questions are asked about the U.S. military plan. U.S. paratroopers enter northern Iraq, the military regroups and reinforces.

• The push on Baghdad resumes. There is a hard-fought battle for the airport. Iraqi TV broadcasts what it says is Saddam on the streets. Iraq warns of a non-conventional attack. U.S. tanks and armor stage a fierce show of force and penetrate Baghdad. Troops enter presidential palaces and Baghdad falls. British troops secure Basra, Iraq's second biggest city.

• Iraq's government collapses. Statues of Saddam are toppled in central Baghdad, cheering in the streets gives way to looting and lawlessness.

Decently Written But Lacking in Useful Features

This book is supposed to act like a guide. You're supposed to be able to start anywhere and get the info you need and move on (and that's how it's been assigned in my class) BUT it reads much better cover to cover because it isn't very good at telling you where a concept was previously covered. Another problem with this book is that it quizzes you on concepts at the ends of each chapter but the answers are no where so you don't know for sure that you got it. There is no solution manual to this book at all.

I received a very obvious "fake". As you can see in the images, this book, when laid side-by-side with a classmate's legitimate copy, there is no doubt it's scanned and reprinted. The quality is terrible and I would not recommend purchasing this item.

Insightful Primer on the Free Market System

This tiny book is an excellent primer for anyone who wanted to know more about Free Market Economics. It does a very good job of explaining tariffs and subsidies and how that affects the market as a whole. The book is written like a story, with one character trying to convince another of something that he shouldn't do (you'll have to read it to find out what). Overall, I think this is a good book for juvenile and adult alike who know very little to nothing about the economics of a free market.

Wish "It's a Wonderful Life" were more like this

I don't really consider this a work of fiction, and neither does the author. It is in a fiction format, but its primary purpose is to make the case against protectionism, and for free markets. Roberts does this beautifully, raising and dismissing almost every argument for protectionism, and doing this with charm, wit, and almost a complete lack of venom.

The story follows the time-traveling journey and conversation of Ed Johnson (a businessman looking for protection form Japanese competition) and his guardian angle David Ricardo (modeled after the little-known economist.) Together they travel to the future, back to the past, and through alternate timelines to demonstrate Robert's point.

Through this journey, Ricardo corrects some critical mistakes in economic theory; such as the `zero-sum theory', misconceptions on the nature of supply and demand, the role and meaning of wages and `real' wages, the mythical "dangers" of a trade deficit, what imports and exports really are, and most of all, dismisses the myth that trade with other countries hurts the American worker overall (which he admits, in a smaller sense, it sometimes does.)

The book takes some leaps of logic, which the author fully admits in the back of the book; such as the town of Star (Ed's hometown) being unchanged in the `protectionist' universe. These little plot devices are not meant to represent reality, but demonstrate more abstract points, in that sense, it is more like a metaphor.

Overall, the book makes one of the strongest cases ageists the practicality of protectionism that I have ever heard. He also fits some talk as to the moral case against it, that it is really an issue of freedom, and no one person has the right to force another in to a certain kind of behavior (A.K.A., buying American products) and that "America" is all about dreams and growth, something not very possible in the protectionist world

My only complaint would be that I wanted more elaboration on some sections of the `conversation'; such as the `dumping' segment. Robert's makes a good case that dumping is not really practical for anybody, that the `dumper' would have to make up for lost profits from lowering their prices. What I don't understand is....what if a company could cover their lost profits in profits from another product, or section of their company (Such as a department store lowering prices on televisions and allowing the produce-department to cover the loss.) I wish Robert's would have gone in to slightly more detail.

There are several section of the book like this; but I want to make clear is that Robert's never claims that this is the ultimate source for `anti-protectionist' arguments, he even suggests further reading in the back of the book, something all reasonable people should do if they are truly interested in understanding the complexities of economics.

I love Robert's style of writing, his books are not just informative, but entertaining, something very hard to achieve for this subject matter. The book was good enough that I ordered His other book, The Invisible Heart, form Amazon. After seeing what he did to It's a Wonderful life, I can't wait to see what he does for a romance novel.

Free Trade vs Fair Trade

The author really did a great job of explaining a complex topic in a simple way for an average person to understand. Economics is a social science and can be complex due to the pressures coming from several forces such as public policy, supply, demand, etc. This should be a mandatory requirement for any Political Science or Macro Economics class to read.

About the Author

Mike Sullivan Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike has taught at Chicago State for over 30 years. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and currently resides in Oaklawn.  Mike has four children.  The two oldest have degrees in mathematics and assisted in proofing, checking examples and exercises, and writing solutions manuals for this project.  Mike III co-authored the Sullivan Graphing with Data Analysis series as well as this series.  Dan, the youngest, sells for Prentice Hall as a generalist.

 

Mike has authored or co-authored over ten books.  He owns a travel agency, and splits his time between a condo in Naples, Florida and a home in Oaklawn, where Mike enjoys gardening.  Mike first signed this series with Deleen Publishing (Acquired by Macmillan) in 1985.

Very clear explanations.

I bought this book for my college class and I have found the explanations to be very clear indeed. In fact, I liked this book so much that I decided to keep it and not re-sell it as we typically do with most college textbooks. It is great for reviewing concepts if you are planning on taking your Praxis exam (for teachers), helping your kids going into college, etc.

They recognized that the Colorado River carved this scenic masterpiece, but exactly when and how it did so eluded them. Only in the last few years has a consensus begun to emerge and now, for the first time, author James Lawrence Powell tells the fascinating story of how the mystery came to be solved.

Not only have geologists discovered the reasons for the majestic width and depth of the Canyon, they have found that at one time the Colorado River ran through it in the opposite direction. At another time, hundreds of feet of gravel buried an ancestor of today's Colorado River. Then erosion removed the gravel and resurrected the river, in what James Lawrence Powell has dubbed the Lazarus Theory.

James Lawrence Powell is Executive Director of the National Physical Science Consortium, and former Director and President of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. He taught geology for twenty years at Oberlin College, where he also served as Acting President. The author of Night Comes to the Cretaceous and Mysteries of Terra Firma, he lives in Buellton, California with his wife, five horses, three cats, two dogs, and a burro.

Grand Canyon Geology: Not a Simple Story

James Powell (no relation to John Wesley Powell) is one of the best authors of popular geology writing today. His previous books, "Night Comes to the Cretaceous" and "Mysteries of Terra Firma", provide fascinating accounts of important ideas in modern geology, such as the age of the Earth, plate tectonics, and the extinction of the dinosaurs. In this book, Powell tackles the complex geology of the Grand Canyon within the broader context of the Green-Colorado River systems. The focus is not on a description of the canyon but on understanding how it was formed.

As Jim Powell tells us, the Colorado Plateau has played a major role in the history of American geology. Much of his book follows the lives and work of the great geologists of the nineteenth century, such as Powell, Gilbert, and Dutton. It was they who gradually came to an understanding of how rivers carve canyons, canyons that sometimes cut right through mountain ranges. Before their work, many people thought that the great canyons were rifts created by other forces, through which rivers later flowed. Most of the first half of the book is a fascinating mix of history and science, using the adventures of men like Powell to illustrate the birth of modern geology.

The second half of the book takes on the more challenging task of explaining the complexities of the Grand Canyon story. As twentieth-century scientists looked more closely at the canyon and measured the ages of rocks through which it cuts, they saw that the simple and elegant theories of the nineteenth century broke down. Perhaps the Colorado River of today did not exist when parts of the canyon were cut. Perhaps the river flowed south-east rather than west, exiting the canyon via the Little Colorado and draining into the Rio Grande. Possibly two separate canyons joined to form the Grand. Maybe the canyon was carved, then filled with gravel and sediment, then cut again within the past few million years. Some of this is heavy going for the geological novice, but the rewards of reading this book are ample. It teaches us that the Earth and its geology are indeed complex, and the process of advancing science is a very human affair. It is sobering to realize that even such a huge geological feature as the Grand Canyon still holds its mysteries and stymies efforts to fit it into a single neat framework.

Worth a read if you're somewhat technically curious

I think James Lawrence Powell had pretty big ambitions for this book when he set out to write it: to tell an adventure story or two about the early exploration of the Southwest, to give the history of the development of several important geological concepts, to go into the biographical details of a few of the leading figures in the field, and to bring the interested lay reader with some but not too much technical background up to date on where Grand Canyon science stands at the moment, the basic question being "How did this thing get here?". Yes, we know the Colorado River did it, but exactly how and when?

For the most part he was successful at these somewhat disparate tasks, though I don't think I can give a grade higher than B+/A- for the overall product. Here were my "issues" with the book:

1) At times it went off in one direction a little too far for my tastes (mostly in the adventure/biography parts), and it was a bit of a confusing mish-mash at others if you can't keep the whole panoply of figures fully in mind. The multiple objectives led to a little gear-stripping at times as the topic changed back and forth.

2) I was most disappointed with the maps: they seem to be scattered around somewhat at random (I found myself flipping pages a lot trying to find this or that map), and I swear some important features mentioned in the text can't be found on the one where you'd think you'd find it - i.e., the maps don't seem to have been made for the book but rather pasted in from some other source.

3) Finally, while the "grandest puzzle" is at heart a science puzzle involving river system geology, I thought the author avoided going into too much scientific detail for fear of perhaps alienating the reader. I would have liked more science, and sooner in the book. I.e., I don't think downcutting rates (with actual numbers) were even mentioned until the very last pages. Powell has a clear talent for deftly explaining technical concepts and should have used it more. But if you're looking for the current state of the science on the Grand Canyon you'll have to plow through a lot of seemingly marginally relevant material first, as Powell seemed more determined to develop fully the whole history of all the relevant ideas involved. As the book had a "teachy" tone to it, it may have worked better for me if it had been in more of an actual textbook format; fundamental concepts layed out first, then assembled into a comprehensive model. Maybe one has to be an actual practitioner in the field to fully appreciate the history and biography.

Still, Powell is a very good writer and the book is basically not hard reading in the least. I think it would be good for someone who wants to understand how the Grand Canyon came about but wants the telling occasionally spiced up with frequently colorful characters overcoming obstacles and limitations (both physical and mental). If you think this book might interest you, don't let the drawbacks I noted keep you from picking it up as they're not fatal flaws by any means. Almost any book on the Grand Canyon will give you a greater appreciation of it, and this is no different.

A Great Adult ESL Level One Textbook

If you are looking for one book that does it all, this is it. Don't confuse this book with "Side-by-Side" just because it has the same author. It is an entirely different beast and everything "Side-by-Side" is not. I use this book as a main textbook with community ed ESL classes and as a supplemental textbook with some workplace ESL classes. My level one students loved this book so much that all the other level one classes at our site gave up their textbooks and switched to this one. It presents the material in appropriate, manageable chunks and it progresses through topics which are extremely appropriate for adults. It's organization is excellent, varying the skills used, and each lesson leaves students feeling like they are learning. This is a good general textbook including conversation, listening, speaking, grammar, TPR, and writing activities. It is a general ESL textbook and not a literacy textbook, however, so for students with low L1 literacy, I supplement this textbook with Molinsky's book "Access" and Linda Mrowicki's book "Pre-reading Resource Book". I have also used Mrowicki's "First Words in English", and "Starting to Read" (Linmore Publishing) as companion texts or as supplemental texts, depending on the class.
