The paradigm of engineering is undergoing a major evolution throughout the world. The use of computers and the Internet has changed the way that we engineer and manufacture products. Among the recent trends in manufacturing are trends in which products are subject to a shorter product life, frequent design changes, small lot sizes, and small in-process inventory restrictions ("lean manufacturing"). The result of these trends is that today more than 90% of our products are manufactured in lots of less than 50 parts. These low lot quantities have eliminated many applications of dedicated production lines that were so effective in producing the inexpensive goods of the 1950 and 1960s.

The first step the nation employed to remain competitive with our international counterparts was the application of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to design and manufacture sophisticated products. Today, we routinely employ CAD to design products and flexible or programmable manufacturing systems to produce low- to medium-volume batch quantities. The Internet provides us with the connection to share design, marketing, and manufacturing information. We now look toward the advent of distributed design and manufacturing using agile networking as a means to produce products for the twenty-first century.

Employing numerical control (NC) and robotics in industry offers one potential solution to many manufacturing flexibility problems. This implementation, however, brings with it a variety of other problems. Robots and NC machines are designed to be flexible, self-contained, and capable of operating in both "stand-alone" and "integrated" manufacturing environs. Integrating this hardware into manageable systems has become a major focus of machine-tool makers and industry. Individual NC machines have also been made more versatile, more precise, more rigid and durable, and faster. More complex parts can be machined with higher accuracy and in less time. Timecompressed manufacturing technologies such as NC and rapid prototyping are being used more routinely to shorten product development cycles and to produce one-of-a-kind products. The benefit of all these new technologies cannot be achieved without the "communication networks" or an understanding of how these activities fit together. Today, it is not unusual for a design made thousands of miles away to be transferred to and realized in a remote site. Part programs and control instructions are downloaded from offices to machine controllers. Shop-floor operations can also be monitored either on-site or from afar. Manufacturing equipment has become part of the supply chain; capacity and availability are parameters used in planning and control of the entire chain. Further integration of the manufacturing component with design and business systems is also a key to our manufacturing success. These communication and control issues, coupled with a variety of sensing issues, are critical to the success of flexible automation in the United States.

This book focuses on the science, mathematics, and engineering of these new engineering methods. It is dedicated to making sure that the United States will remain the most efficient manufacturing nation in the world. The purpose of the book is to provide a comprehensive view of manufacturing, with a focus on design, automation, flexible automation, and the use of computers in manufacturing (CIM). Unlike other CIM books, this one attempts to provide a strong analytical science base and background in computer-aided manufacturing systems. The book is an excellent professional reference and also is an excellent text for CAM instruction.

The book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Each chapter covers general background, fundamental principles, and applications. Unlike most other manufacturing books on the market, it includes both descriptive information and analytical models. Whenever possible, MATLAB is used in examples. We do not assume that readers have a significant background beyond basic undergraduate engineering courses. However, the book does cover a very wide range of technologies and methodologies. Readers will gain in-depth and practical knowledge in CAM technologies.

Getting dated, lots of errors

I've used this text for a reference and for teaching several courses. The main problem is that it is getting outdated--ANY text that has "computer" in the title gets outdated after a few years. Of course, there are fewer and fewer texts that address CAD/CAM in the marketplace as well, because they can't keep up with the technology. ON the other hand, manufacturing systems (particularly CNC) don't change quickly, so much of the legacy systems out there can be addressed with the text. The other issue is the number of figure and solution errors--there are quite a few. If you assign problems from the text, be prepared to check every single problem. I've alerted the publisher to this problem several times and have not seen any update or even an errata sheet.

In summary: Pretty good for an encompassing CAD/CAM text, a bit dated (especially the CAD section), and check for errors.

some of what was supposed to be there

The book content itself is great. The problem is from the seller, the cover was not "slightly" bent or torn it had been completely ripped in half and then glued back together (though glued together as well as possible considering) also the ACE organic part of the book that I specifically wanted was not included, instead an access code to a different Prentice Hall online tool was what came in the book.

I recently purchased this textbook for my Business Ethics class. The price was very reasonable compared to many other website offers. It is lightweight, small and is in mint condition. It doesn't have any writing/highlighting/wear or tear on any of the pages. The book is an easy to read book. It also came before the estimated delivery date, which was a huge plus for me, because I am a current college student. I would recommend this book to anyone who studies business, Or Needs the book for their Business Ethics class.

During my MBA curriculum I had some pretty dry textbooks. This was not the case for this business ethics book! I actually enjoyed reading the case studies (I know, weird right?). I kept this book instead of selling it at the end of the semester.

William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. An encyclopedia of Datacom information

For the stated audience -- academics and self-study professionals -- it is hard to envision a better single volume study of datacom principles. Divided into five primary parts (overview, data communications, WANs, LANs, and Networking Protocols), it can provide excellent first course source material to provide a general overview of datacom principles and techniques.
Note that, with as much information as being presented, the book is much more useful as a course text for study than for casual reading. However, it covers sufficient areas to be useful as a reference for the data & computer communications professional. Additional information is maintained by the author on his web site which provides more up-to-date information than can ever be maintained in a printed volume.

Usage of this book depends on your background

This book has been heaven sent for me, mainly because of my background. I have a EE background and I have been always wanting to know about the data networks.
The first and the second parts of the book deals with the signalling and transmission media and also the basics of the data networks like data link control. I found these sections (mainly signalling) very weak and sub standard, but most of the CS students in the class were scratching their heads complaining that it was too complicated. The best thing in these sections is the data link control (just spectacular).
The remaining parts of the books have covered data networks. Now some seasoned networking person would find these parts very abstract and not enough depth in it, but a novice that I was in data networks, I loved it.
The three sections are:
WAN
LAN
Security and Internet and protocols
The discussion on WAN/ATM is boring.
The best part of the book is in fact the LAN section.
Internet protocols are also well defined.
Other strengths of the book:
1. A very smooth and progressive transition from the switched network discussion to the data networks discussion.
2. Some of the problems are pretty challenging and make you think beyond what you read in the book, some of the analytical problems are great.
3. Very analytical.
Weaknesses:
1. Typical Stallings book, covers too much without going in the depth in any single topic.
2. The book spends almost equal time on all the technologies, some of the hot topics need to discussed more and the obsolete topics are not supposed to be discussed that much (typical Stallings) an example is token ring and ethernet have an equal amount of discussion, even though token ring is out.
3. The discussion on Fiber channel wherever is a joke, it is minimal and insufficient.
4. Too theoretical (stallings has done a much better work in his other work high-speed networks), but since this is the 1st book in networks, it is OK.
5. Very unpractical, you cant do anything more that you could not do before reading this book. The only thing that I learnt is how to identify the class of the network address (wow).
So, if you ask me, IT is NOT a bible of computer networks. In fact, it should be recycled once you are done with it. But this is most definitely the 1st book on data networks, it has taught me more on any single topic than any other book I have read ever. The name of the book is misleading, it says "Data and compute networks" and then the book spends a good time on switched networks and also too much time on the signalling.

Probably not a good book for newbies

This book is inadequate for people without a decent amount of experience with data communications. The book regularly jumps between from extremely basic to fairly complex information making wild assumptions at the reader's base knowledge. An example of this is evident early on when the book starts by going into detail on what the parts of a wave are and then expecting you to understand Fourier Analysis to the T with very little explanation a few pages later. Charts and diagrams included in the book are referred to pages before and after they actually appear, leading to a lot of flipping back and forth. The charts are also poorly explained and detailed, often leaving out important bits of information that most people with limited knowledge wouldn't be expected to know. The review questions aren't worded well, and often leave you wondering whether or not the author had anyone from outside of his department (or even in his department) actually review his writing.

Sadly, since this is a required reading for my class, there's really nothing I could do to get away from this book. I'd assume that the majority of people looking to purchase this book are in the same position.

Honestly, I could only recommend this to people looking for a refresher on data and computer communications.

Gary Borich is professor and a Cissy McDaniel Parker Endowed Fellow at The University of Texas at Austin. He is author of 13 books in Teacher Education and Educational Psychology, including Effective Teaching Methods: Research-Based Practice, 7e (Allyn & Bacon, 2010); Observation Skills for Effective Teaching, 6e (Allyn & Bacon, 2010) and Educational Testing and Measurement: Classroom Applications and Practice, 9e (Wiley, 2009)

This textbook for teachers covers all the basics of what new teachers should consider when starting off in their classrooms. New teachers will gain insight on why certain teaching methods work, and when best to use them.
