Introduction Introduction

Welcome to Windows Server 2003 on ProLiant Servers. Early in the design of this book, we decided that our overall approach was to tell the reader, "Your ProLiant is a very significant investment and is a powerful server. Look at all the things it can be used for with Windows Server 2003: It can run Active Directory to network your entire enterprise in a secure, dynamic, and scalable structure; it can be an Exchange Server, a VPN Server, or a Terminal Services Server; it can provide High Availability through Clustering; and more." But rather than regurgitate white papers and documents that tell how it should work, we took the approach of how it does work and here are some tips on what does and doesn't work. We did that by documenting actual case studies of migrations by HP itself, HP customers such as Reed Elseveir, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and Eastman Chemical, and numerous practical examples found while working with customers in their daily work at HP. Of course there is no shortage of books on Windows Server 2003, but our niche is deploying Windows Server 2003 on ProLiant servers. This book's added value is how to use the "ProLiant Advantage" in your Windows environment. We have weaved recommendations, tips, and details regarding ProLiant deployment, management, and troubleshooting throughout the book. For example, Chapter 10 covers Windows system management and troubleshooting, and how to use ProLiant management tools and troubleshooting methods. Chapter 11 discusses disaster recovery methods for Active Directory and ProLiant servers. Server sizing and recommendations are noted in various chapters.

Written by HP engineers and designed to communicate the benefits and unique features of Windows Server 2003 and ProLiant, this book presents them in a positive voice that reflects the authors' true confidence in these two platforms. This book is not a marketing tool; rather it's a technical resource book designed to help those who have made investments in ProLiant servers understand how to utilize the features, administration tools, and deployment tools in developing a sound Windows 2003 infrastructure. This includes providing an in-depth explanation of Windows 2003 features—how they differ from Windows 2000 and how that will help your organization. So if you encounter a passage that seems a little zealous in its presentation of the facts, keep in mind that it just reflects the authors' enthusiasm for two darn good products!

This book is the first of its kind in that it combines two separate platforms that are traditionally used together, but have not ever been covered as the primary focus of a single book. Windows and ProLiant are probably the most widely deployed operating system (OS) and server combination in use today. With more than eight million ProLiant servers sold at sales of over one and a half million units annually with around 80% deployed with Windows Server, the community of organizations running Windows on ProLiant is substantial and growing at a rapid pace. As the industry standard server category has grown, Windows Server and ProLiant have become a tradition for many businesses. The current generation of ProLiant servers and Windows Server 2003 continue the tradition of industry standards-based innovation to again offer a powerful combination of features and technologies. It seems fitting to detail these two platforms—their features and how they complement one another—as they are actually used in tandem by IT organizations every day around the world.

The community of ProLiant and Windows engineers within HP composes the largest organization of Windows and ProLiant specialists anywhere. Drawing on this unique body of expertise, HP maintains the largest installation of Windows Server 2003 outside of Microsoft and services thousands of the world's leading organizations. HP provides the Windows Server 2003 and ProLiant expertise to help these organizations meet the challenges of planning, deploying, managing, and maintaining these evolving technologies. For the authors and contributors of this ground-breaking book, the opportunity to work within this unique and talented community has been a challenging and rewarding experience. What we've learned during our tenure has provided the inspiration to take on the challenge of assembling and organizing the details of the many components of the two platforms to assist individuals and organizations in taking full advantage of these two powerful products.

How to Use This Book

Individuals and organizations can use this book as a

  • Guide to deployment

  • Ready reference

The authors assume the reader has a fundamental understanding of servers, networking, AD, and the Microsoft Windows family of OSs, but we don't expect every reader to be an expert on every subject. We've tried to provide background where appropriate, as well as references to additional information.

This book is dedicated to negotiators who want to improve their ability to negotiate—whether that be multimillion-dollar business deals or personal interactions. Many books address the issues of negotiation, so why this one? If I were to cite a single reason why I wrote a book in this saturated field it is this: The science of negotiation can help people dramatically improve their ability to negotiate economically better deals and also psychologically better deals. Simply stated: You can improve your monetary returns and feel better about yourself and the people you deal with. This book contains an integration of theory, scientific research, and practical examples. Moreover, the practical examples—selected from hundreds of real-world negotiations involving people from several companies—illustrate effective as well as ineffective negotiation skills.

Here is what you can expect when you read this book:

  • Illustrative case studies and real-life negotiations: I have included several examples and actual cases of negotiating in managerial and executive contexts. Each chapter opens with a case analysis (often from the business world, but government, community, and personal life as well). Furthermore, many of the points in the chapters are supplemented with illustrations and examples drawn from actual negotiations, both contemporary and historical. I do not use these examples to prove a theory; rather, I use them to illustrate how many of the concepts in the book are borne out in real-world situations.
  • Skills-based approach: I provide practical take-away points for the manager and the executive. A good example is Chapter 4 on integrative negotiation. A series of hands-on principles that have been proven to increase the value of negotiated deals are provided. Moreover, several students and clients have written, indicating how they utilized the tools in their actual business negotiations. Those examples are included as well.
  • Self-insight: We included several ways that negotiators can test their own intuition and approach. For example, Chapter 5, Developing a Negotiating Style, allows negotiators to assess their "instinctive" bargaining style and provides suggestions for how to further develop their bargaining repertoire. Moreover, Chapter 10 provides a deep look at cultural differences in negotiation so that the negotiator can better understand his or her own cultural style and that of others.
  • Sophisticated bargaining skills: The second and third sections of the book deal with complex, yet commonly occurring negotiating situations, such as negotiating with agents, mediation and arbitration, negotiating via e-mail and conference call, negotiating with competitor companies, and of course, negotiating cross-culturally.

I took the task of revising The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator very seriously. Every chapter has a new opening section that illustrates a real-world negotiation and no fewer than 135 examples from the business world have been added since the last edition. Also, I cited the ground-breaking results of more than 200 new scientific articles on negotiation. benefit greatly from the advice, comments, and critiques given to me by my students and colleagues, and I hope that their advice keeps coming so that I am able to improve upon the book even further.

The research and ideas in this book come from an invaluable set of scholars in the fields of social psychology, organizational behavior, sociology, negotiation, and cognitive psychology. My research, thinking, and writing has been inspired in important ways by the following people: Wendi Adair, Cameron Anderson, Linda Babcock, Max Bazerman,Kristin Behfar, Terry Boles, Jeanne Brett, Susan Brodt, Karen Cates, Hoon-Seok Choi, Gary Fine, Craig Fox, Adam Galinsky, Wendi Gardner, Dedre Gentner, Robert Gibbons, Kevin Gibson, James Gillespie, Rich Gonzalez, Deborah Gruenfeld, Reid Hastie, Andy Hoffman, Peter Kim, Shirli Kopelman, Rod Kramer, Laura Kray, Terri Kurtzburg, Geoffrey Leonardelli, John Levine, Allan Lind, George Loewenstein, Jeff Loewenstein, Deepak Malhotra, Beta Mannix, Kathleen McGinn, Vicki Medvec, Tanya Menon, Dave Messick, Terry Mitchell, Don Moore, Michael Morris, Keith Murnighan, Janice Nadler, Maggie Neale, Kathy Phillips, Robin Pinkley, Ashleigh Rosette, Nancy Rothbard, Elizabeth Seerey, Marwan Sinaceur, Harris Sondak, Tom Tyler, Leaf Van Boven, Kimberly Wade-Benzoni, Laurie Weingart, and Judith White. In The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator, I use the pronoun "we" because so much of my thinking has been influenced and shaped by this set of eminent scholars.

The revision of this book would not have been possible without the dedication, organization, and editorial skills of Sean McMillan, who created the layout, organized hundreds of drafts, mastered the figures, and researched many case studies for this book.

In this book, I talk about the "power of the situation" and how strongly the environment shapes our behavior. The Kellogg School of Management is one of the most supportive, dynamic environments I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of. In particular, Dean Dipak Jain and Associate Deans Robert Magee and Robert Korajczyk have strongly supported research as well as teaching, and intellectual leadership as well as pedagogical leadership. I am particularly indebted to my wonderful visionary colleague, Jeanne Brett, who created the Dispute Resolution Research Center (DRRC) at Kellogg in 1986, and to the Hewlett Foundation for their generous support of the DRRC. Grants from the National Science Foundation's Decision Risk and Management Science program have made it possible for me to conduct several of the research studies that I discuss in this book. I am also grateful for a grant received by the Citigroup Research Council, which made possible many of the studies about learning and negotiation reviewed in this book.

This book is very much a team effort of the people I have mentioned here, whose talents are diverse, broad, and extraordinarily impressive. I am deeply indebted to my colleagues and my students, and I feel grateful that they have touched my life and this book.

Comprehensive in Its Breadth
By Thomas Oswald
As others have noted, there are many books on negotiations. What makes this book stand out is the comprehensive breadth of its coverage and that it provides an integrated view on the subject. To my knowledge, it is unique in its coverage of both the "hard" and "soft" aspects of negotiations.

For that reason, I recommend this book to everyone interested in negotiations. Using it as a foundation, you can then read other books to explore more deeply specific aspects of this subject.

If your budget allows, I also recommend Essentials of Negotiation as a complement to this book.

Once you've read one or both of those, you'll be ready for Negotiation Analysis: The Science and Art of Collaborative Decision Making by Howard Raiffa.

Brilliant tool to prepare for/evaluate negotiations
By Mikhala Stein
Thompson's book provides an easy to read guide for both the novice and experienced negotiator. While providing clear strategic advice on what to do at and away from the table, this book goes one step further by providing insights into the mental models of negotiators and the biases that can seriously hinder one's negotiated outcome. I used this book for a negotiation course at Harvard, and continue to refer back to it in my work and personal interactions.

Used in MBA program - not that useful
By Hoppaguy
We used this book in our negotiations class and actually found Getting to Yes to be more useful. This is one of those textbooks that I have written about in other classes that has a lot of common sense in it but it actually makes thinking about negotiation harder than it really is. The book could easily have been shrunk from 430 pages to about 150 pages. The book actually presents too many things to think about in a negotiation that you end up becoming confused about which strategy to use or how to play defense. Of course, like any book some people might like it but I know myself and other classmates did not find it that helpful.

Introduction

The Even You Can Learn Statistics Owners Manual

In today's world, knowing how to apply statistics is more important than ever. Even You Can Learn Statistics: The Easy to Use Guide for Everyone Who Has Ever Been Afraid of Statistics will teach you the basic concepts that provide that understanding. You will also learn the most commonly used statistical methods and be able to practice those methods using a statistical calculator or a spreadsheet program. Please read the rest of this introduction

so that you can become familiar with the distinctive features of this book. Be sure to visit the Web site for this book (www.prenticehall.com/youcanlearnstatistics), which contains free downloads and other material to support your learning.

Mathematics Is Always Optional!

Never mastered higher mathematics—or generally fearful of math? Not to worry, because in Even You Can Learn Statistics, you will find that every concept is explained in plain English, without the use of higher mathematics or mathematical symbols. Interested in the mathematical foundations behind statistics? Even You Can Learn Statistics includes EQUATION BLACKBOARDS, standalone sections that present the equations behind statistical methods and complement the main material. Either way, you can learn statistics.

Learning with the Concept-Interpretation Approach

Even You Can Learn Statistics uses a Concept-Interpretation approach to help you learn statistics. For each important statistical concept, you will first find a

CONCEPT, a plain-language definition that uses no complicated mathematical terms, followed by an INTERPRETATION that fully explains the concept and its importance to statistics. When necessary, these sections also review the misconceptions and the errors people make when trying to apply the concept.

For simpler concepts, an EXAMPLES section lists real-life examples or applications of the statistical concepts. For more advanced concepts, WORKED-OUT PROBLEMS provide a complete solution to a statistical problem—including actual spreadsheet and calculator results—that illustrate how you can apply the concept to your own problems.

Practicing Statistics While You Learn Statistics

To enhance your learning of statistics, you should always review the WORKED-OUT PROBLEMS. If you want to practice what you have just learned, you can use the optional CALCULATOR KEYS and SPREADSHEET SOLUTION sections, which help you apply a statistical calculator or spreadsheet program to statistical analyses.

CALCULATOR KEYS sections give you the keystroke-by-keystroke steps to perform statistical analysis on a Texas Instruments statistical calculator from the TI-83 or TI-84 families, including TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus models. (You can adapt many sections for use with other TI statistical calculators—such as any model from the TI-86, TI-89, or Voyage 200 families—that have different keypads and arrangements of statistical functions.)

SPREADSHEET SOLUTION sections provide instructions for using the statistical capabilities of Microsoft Excel and identify files that you can download from the Even You Can Learn Statistics Web site that contain complete spreadsheets that you can use as models for your own problem solving.

If you plan to use either of these sections, review Appendix A for the conventions, software settings, and assumptions used for these sections.

In-Chapter Aids

As you read a chapter, look for Important Point icons that highlight key explanations. Download the data files from the Web site for this book (www.prenticehall.com/youcanlearnstatistics) so that you may examine the data under study in the Worked-out Problems. Even if you do not plan to use a calculator or a spreadsheet, look at the actual examples of their outputs to become familiar with how statistical results are reported.

Interested in Math? Then look for this icon throughout the book. And if you are not interested in math, remember that all of the passages with this icon can be skipped without losing any comprehension of the statistical methods presented.

End-of-Chapter Features

At the end of most chapters of Even You Can Learn Statistics, you will find these features that you can review to reinforce your learning.

Important Equations

A list of the important equations discussed in the chapter. Even if you are not interested in the mathematics of the statistical methods and have skipped the EQUATION BLACKBOARDS in the book, you can use these lists for reference and later study.

One-Minute Summary

A quick review of the significant topics of a chapter in outline form. When appropriate, the summaries also help guide you to make the right decisions about applying statistics to the data you seek to analyze.

Test Yourself

Explore how much you have retained with a set of questions that enable you to review and test yourself (with answers provided) on the concepts presented in a chapter.

Summary

Even You Can Learn Statistics can help you whether you are studying statistics as part of a formal course or just brushing up on your knowledge of statistics for a specific analysis. Be sure to visit the Web site for this book (www.prenticehall.com/youcanlearnstatistics). A sound, basic stats book.
By H. Perera
This book is a good introduction to the topic and served me well when I needed a refresher on statistical concepts. Without rehashing comments made by other reviewers, the only shortfalls for me was that structural equation modeling and psychological society reporting guidelines for reporting anova, regression, etc was not covered. While some may consider these advanced concepts (beyond a book of basic stats), APA guidelines or at least generic reporting guidelines are explained in other books, some within a similar price range. It would have greatly extended the relevance of this book to psychology students, particularly at the undergraduate level. As it stands, I'd recommend it as more suitable for undergraduate students of business studies than the social sciences.

So-so
By Kimberly Colley
This book tries to break down statistics into an understandable format, but I learn best by doing. While the book has sample problems for you to work out, the answers do not come with explanations, so if you didn't get it right the first time, you have no idea where you went wrong.

Still statistically challenged
By Denise Ogerly
I was hoping this book would be the MAGIC book to help me even understand the BASICS of statistics. It didn't! I must just be a mathmatically challenged individual that there is no hope for. My husband (who is very good with numbers) told me this was a good book. So, I guess if you are good with math, this book will help you. But, if you are like me there is no hope for you!!!

Agile Estimating and Planning, by Mike Cohn

Praise for Agile Estimating and Planning

"Traditional, deterministic approaches to planning and estimating simply don't cut it on the slippery slopes of today's dynamic, change-driven projects. Mike Cohn's breakthrough book gives us not only the philosophy, but also the guidelines and a proven set of tools that we need to succeed in planning, estimating, and scheduling projects with a high uncertainty factor. At the same time, the author never loses sight of the need to deliver business value to the customer each step of the way."

—Doug DeCarlo, author of eXtreme Project Management: Using Leadership, Principles and Tools to Deliver Value in the Face of Volatility (Jossey-Bass, 2004)

"We know how to build predictive plans and manage them. But building plans that only estimate the future and then embrace change, challenge most of our training and skills. In Agile Estimating and Planning , Mike Cohn once again fills a hole in the Agile practices, this time by showing us a workable approach to Agile estimating and planning. Mike delves into the nooks and crannies of the subject and anticipates many of the questions and nuances of this topic. Students of Agile processes will recognize that this book is truly about agility, bridging many of the practices between Scrum and ExtremeProgramming."

—Ken Schwaber, Scrum evangelist, Agile Alliance cofounder, and signatory to the Agile Manifesto

"In Agile Estimating and Planning , Mike Cohn has, for the first time, brought together most everything that the Agile community has learned about the subject. The book is clear, well organized, and a pleasant and valuable read. It goes into all the necessary detail, and at the same time keeps the reader's burden low. We can dig in as deeply as we need to, without too much detail before we need it. The book really brings together everything we have learned about Agile estimation and planning over the past decade. It will serve its readers well."

—Ron Jeffries, www.XProgramming.com, author of Extreme Programming Installed (Addison-Wesley, 2001) and Extreme Programming Adventures in C# (Microsoft Press, 2004)

" Agile Estimating and Planning provides a view of planning that's balanced between theory and practice, and it is supported by enough concrete experiences to lend it credibility. I particularly like the quote 'planning is a quest for value.' It points to a new, more positive attitude toward planning that goes beyond the 'necessary evil' view that I sometimes hold."

—Kent Beck, author of Extreme Programming Explained, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley, 2005)

"Up-front planning is still the most critical part of software development. Agile software development requires Agile planning techniques. This book shows you how to employ Agile planning in a succinct, practical, and easy-to-follow manner."

—Adam Rogers, Ultimate Software

"Mike does a great follow-up to User Stories Applied by continuing to provide Agile teams with the practical approaches and techniques to increase agility. In this book, Mike provides time-proven and well-tested methods for being successful with the multiple levels of planning and estimating required by Agile. This book is the first to detail the disciplines of Agile estimating and planning, in ways that rival my 1980 civil engineering texts on CPM Planning and Estimating."

—Ryan Martens, President and Founder, Rally Software Development Corporation

"With insight and clarity, Mike Cohn shows how to effectively produce software of high business value. With Agile estimation and planning, you focus effort where it really counts, and continue to do so as circumstances change."

—Rick Mugridge, Rimu Research Ltd., and lead author, Fit for Developing Software (Prentice Hall, 2005)

"Finally! The groundbreaking book my clients have been clamoring for! Agile Estimating and Planning demystifies the process of defining, driving, and delivering great software that matters to the business. Mike's clarity, insight, and experience leap out through every page of this book, offering an approach that is relevant and immediately useful to all members of an Agile project."

—Kert D. Peterson, President, Enterprise Agile Group, LLC

"This isn't yet another generic book on Agile software development. Agile Estimating and Planning fills a gap left by most of the other books and gives you important, practical, down-to-earth techniques needed to be successful on Agile development projects."

—Steve Tockey, Principal Consultant, Construx Software

"Estimation, planning, and tracking is a trinity. If you don't do one of them, you don't need the other two. This book provides very practical knowledge for estimation, planning, prioritizing, and tracking. It should be compulsory subject matter for project managers and their teams, even if they hesitate to call themselves Agile."

—Niels Malotaux, Project Coach

"Effective planning is an important, but often misunderstood, part of any successful Agile project. With Agile Estimating and Planning , Mike Cohn has given us a definitive guide to a wide range of Agile estimating and planning practices. With his clear and practical style, Mike not only explains how to successfully get started planning an Agile project, but also provides a wealth of tips and advice for improving any team's Agile planning process. This book is a must-read for managers, coaches, and members of Agile teams."

—Paul Hodgetts, Agile coach and CEO, Agile Logic

"Mike's writing style captures the essence of agility-just the right amount of information to bring clarity to the reader. This book provides an excellent guide for all Agile practitioners, both seasoned and novice."

—Robert Holler, President and CEO, VersionOne, LLC

"It is as if Mike took the distilled knowledge regarding planning and estimation of a great Agile developer (which he is) and laid out all he knows in an easily understandable manner. More importantly, he has a great mix of concepts with real-world examples finished off with a case study so the reader can relate the information to their own situation. Unless you are already an expert Agile planner and estimator, this book is for you."

—Alan Shalloway, CEO, Senior Consultant, Net Objectives, and coauthor of Design Patterns Explained, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley, 2005)

"Although I had plenty of XP experience before trying out Mike Cohn's Agile planning practices, the effectiveness of the practical and proven techniques in this book blew me away! The book recognizes that people, not tools or processes, produce great software, and that teams benefit most by learning about their project and their product as they go. The examples in the book are concrete, easily grasped, and simply reek of common sense. This book will help teams (whether Agile or not) deliver more value, more often, and have fun doing it! Whether you're a manager or a programmer, a tester or a CEO, part of an Agile team, or just looking for a way to stamp out chaos and death marches, this book will guide you."

—Lisa Crispin, coauthor of Testing Extreme Programming (Addison-Wesley, 2003)

"Mike Cohn does an excellent job demonstrating how an Agile approach can address issues of risk and uncertainty in order to provide more meaningful estimates and plans for software projects."

—Todd Little, Senior Development Manager, Landmark Graphics

"Mike Cohn explains his approach to Agile planning, and shows how 'critical chain' thinking can be used to effectively buffer both schedule and features. As with User Stories Applied, this book is easy to read and grounded in real-world experience."

—Bill Wake, author of Refactoring Workbook (Addison-Wesley, 2003)

"Mike brings this book to life with real-world examples that help reveal how and why an Agile approach works for planning software development projects. This book has great breadth, ranging from the fundamentals of release planning to advanced topics such as financial aspects of prioritization. I can see this book becoming an invaluable aid to Agile project managers, as it provides a wealth of practical tips such as how to set iteration length and boot-strap velocity, and communicate progress."

—Rachel Davies, Independent Consultant

"There has been a need for a solid, pragmatic book on the long-term vision of an Agile Project for project managers. Agile Estimating and Planning addresses this need. It's not theory—this book contains project-tested practices that have been used on Agile projects. As Mike's test subjects, we applied these practices to the development of video games (one of the most unpredictable project environments you can imagine) with success."

—Clinton Keith, Chief Technical Officer, High Moon Studios

"When I first heard Mike Cohn speak, I was impressed by a rare combination of qualities: deep experience and understanding in modern iterative and Agile methods; a drive to find and validate easy, high-impact solutions beyond the status quo of traditional (usually ineffective) methods; and the passion and clarity of a natural coach. These qualities are evident in this wonderful, practical guide. I estimate you won't be disappointed in studying and applying his advice."

—Craig Larman, Chief Scientist, Valtech, and author of Applying UML and Patterns, Third Edition (Prentice Hall, 2005) and Agile and Iterative Development (Addison-Wesley, 2004)

" Agile Estimating and Planning is a critical guide on how to successfully provide value to customers of IT services. This book is filled with clear examples that are essential—from project team members to the executive level."

—Lou Thomas, Director, Applications Development, Farm Credit Services of America

"This work is deeply significant in that it articulates and details structured techniques to realize a simple, but profound insight—planning is an iterative quest for value, rather than a perfunctory scheduling of activities. Mike presents processes to converge on this value while reducing risk and uncertainty, supporting decision making, establishing trust, and conveying information. Agile methodologies have shifted the emphasis from plans to planning, but have glossed over many of the finer details of Agile planning. Now, very simply and accessibly, Mike demonstrates how it can be done."

—Sanjiv Augustine, Practice Director, Lean-Agile Consulting at CC Pace, and author of Managing Agile Projects (Prentice Hall, 2005)

"The techniques described in Agile Estimating and Planning have helped us tremendously with planning and managing our projects. It provides all you have ever wanted to know about Agile project management."

—Roman Pichler, Engineering Manager, Siemens Communications

"Mike Cohn presents a highly pragmatic and logical approach to making projects successful in a world beset by uncertainty and change. With his trademark clarity and directness, Mike cuts through the management mumbo jumbo to present practical techniques that can be put into use immediately. Put the odds squarely in your favor by making Mike Cohn the planning guru on your next big project."

—Pete Deemer, Vice President, Product Development, Yahoo!

"This book distills the fundamental ideas behind Agile estimating and planning, presenting them in a thoughtful and approachable manner. This is a 'must-have' book that presents clear, unambiguous, and practical advice for anyone who wants to successfully manage modern software development projects."

—Scott W. Ambler, President, Ambysoft Inc.

"How do your projects go? Frustrating changes? Uncertainty? Product missing both the mark and the deadline? With insight and clarity, Mike Cohn shows how to effectively produce software that is of high business value. With agile estimation and planning, you focus effort where it really counts, and continue to do so as circumstances change."

—Rick Mugridge, Rimu Research Ltd., and lead author of Fit for Developing Software

"We are true believers in the agile methods described in this book, and have experienced a substantially positive impact from their implementation and continued use. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in making their software development more practical and effective."

—Mark M. Gutrich, President and CEO, Fast 401k, Inc.

Praise for "Agile Estimating and Planning"

"Traditional, deterministic approaches to planning and estimating simply don't cut it on the slippery slopes of today's dynamic, change-driven projects. Mike Cohn's breakthrough book gives us not only the philosophy, but also the guidelines and a proven set of tools that we need to succeed in planning, estimating, and scheduling projects with a high uncertainty factor. At the same time, the author never loses sight of the need to deliver business value to the customer each step of the way."

x2014;Doug DeCarlo, author of "eXtreme Project Management: Using Leadership, Principles and Tools to Deliver Value in the Face of Volatility" (Jossey-Bass, 2004)

"We know how to build predictive plans and manage them. But building plans that only estimate the future and then embrace change, challenge most of our training and skills. In "Agile Estimating and Planning," Mike Cohn once again fills a hole in the Agile practices, this time by showing us a workable approach to Agile estimating and planning. Mike delves into the nooks and crannies of the subject and anticipates many of the questions and nuances of this topic. Students of Agile processes will recognize that this book is truly about agility, bridging many of the practices between Scrum and ExtremeProgramming."

x2014;Ken Schwaber, Scrum evangelist, Agile Alliance cofounder, and signatory to the Agile Manifesto

"In "Agile Estimating and Planning," Mike Cohn has, for the first time, brought together most everything that the Agile community has learned about the subject. It will serve its readers well."

x2014;Ron Jeffries, www.XProgramming.com, author of "Extreme Programming Installed "(Addison-Wesley, 2001) and "Extreme Programming Adventures in C#" (Microsoft Press, 2004)

""Agile Estimating and Planning" provides a view of planning that's balanced between theory and practice, and it is supported by enough concrete experiences to lend it credibility. I particularly like the quote 'planning is a quest for value.' It points to a new, more positive attitude toward planning that goes beyond the 'necessary evil' view that I sometimes hold."

x2014;Kent Beck, author of "Extreme Programming Explained, Second Edition" (Addison-Wesley, 2005)

"Up-front planning is still the most critical part of software development. Agile software development requires Agile planning techniques. This book shows you how to employ Agile planning in a succinct, practical, and easy-to-follow manner."

x2014;Adam Rogers, Ultimate Software

"Mike does a great follow-up to "User Stories Applied "by continuing to provide Agile teams with the practical approaches and techniques to increase agility. In this book, Mike provides time-proven and well-tested methods for being successful with the multiple levels of planning and estimating required by Agile. This book is the first to detail the disciplines of Agile estimating and planning, in ways that rival my 1980 civil engineering texts on CPM Planning and Estimating."

x2014;Ryan Martens, President and Founder, Rally Software Development Corporation

"With insight and clarity, Mike Cohn shows how to effectively produce software of high business value. With Agile estimation and planning, you focus effort where it really counts, and continue to do so as circumstances change."

x2014;Rick Mugridge, Rimu Research Ltd., and lead author, "Fit for Developing Software" (Prentice Hall, 2005)

"Finally! The groundbreaking book my clients have been clamoring for! "Agile Estimating and Planning" demystifies the process of defining, driving, and delivering great software that matters to the business. Mike's clarity, insight, and experience leap out through every page of this book, offering an approach that is relevant and immediately useful to all members of an Agile project."

x2014;Kert D. Peterson, President, Enterprise Agile Group, LLC

"This isn't yet another generic book on Agile software development. "Agile Estimating and Planning" fills a gap left by most of the other books and gives you important, practical, down-to-earth techniques needed to be successful on Agile development projects."

x2014;Steve Tockey, Principal Consultant, Construx Software

"Estimation, planning, and tracking is a trinity. If you don't do one of them, you don't need the other two. This book provides very practical knowledge for estimation, planning, prioritizing, and tracking. It should be compulsory subject matter for project managers and their teams, even if they hesitate to call themselves Agile."

x2014;Niels Malotaux, Project Coach

"Effective planning is an important, but often misunderstood, part of any successful Agile project. With "Agile Estimating and Planning," Mike Cohn has given us a definitive guide to a wide range of Agile estimating and planning practices. With his clear and practical style, Mike not only explains how to successfully get started planning an Agile project, but also provides a wealth of tips and advice for improving any team's Agile planning process. This book is a must-read for managers, coaches, and members of Agile teams."

x2014;Paul Hodgetts, Agile coach and CEO, Agile Logic

"Mike's writing style captures the essence of agility-just the right amount of information to bring clarity to the reader. This book provides an excellent guide for all Agile practitioners, both seasoned and novice."

x2014;Robert Holler, President and CEO, VersionOne, LLC

"It is as if Mike took the distilled knowledge regarding planning and estimation of a great Agile developer (which he is) and laid out all he knows in an easily understandable manner. More importantly, he has a great mix of concepts with real-world examples finished off with a case study so the reader can relate the information to their own situation. Unless you are already an expert Agile planner and estimator, this book is for you."

x2014;Alan Shalloway, CEO, Senior Consultant, Net Objectives, and coauthor of "Design Patterns Explained, Second Edition" (Addison-Wesley, 2005)

Whether you're a manager or a programmer, a tester or a CEO, part of an Agile team, or just looking for a way to stamp out chaos and death marches, this book will guide you."

x2014;Lisa Crispin, coauthor of "Testing Extreme Programming" (Addison-Wesley, 2003)

"Mike Cohn does an excellent job demonstrating how an Agile approach can address issues of risk and uncertainty in order to provide more meaningful estimates and plans for software projects."

x2014;Todd Little, Senior Development Manager, Landmark Graphics

"Mike Cohn explains his approach to Agile planning, and shows how 'critical chain' thinking can be used to effectively buffer both schedule and features. As with "User Stories Applied," this book is easy to read and grounded in real-world experience."

x2014;Bill Wake, author of "Refactoring Workbook" (Addison-Wesley, 2003)

"Mike brings this book to life with real-world examples that help reveal how and why an Agile approach works for planning software development projects. This book has great breadth, ranging from the fundamentals of release planning to advanced topics such as financial aspects of prioritization. I can see this book becoming an invaluable aid to Agile project managers, as it provides a wealth of practical tips such as how to set iteration length and boot-strap velocity, and communicate progress."

x2014;Rachel Davies, Independent Consultant

"There has been a need for a solid, pragmatic book on the long-term vision of an Agile Project for project managers. "Agile Estimating and Planning" addresses this need. It's not theory x2014;this book contains project-tested practices that have been used on Agile projects. As Mike's test subjects, we applied these practices to the development of video games (one of the most unpredictable project environments you can imagine) with success."

x2014;Clinton Keith, Chief Technical Officer, High Moon Studios

"When I first heard Mike Cohn speak, I was impressed by a rare combination of qualities: deep experience and understanding in modern iterative and Agile methods; a drive to find and validate easy, high-impact solutions beyond the status quo of traditional (usually ineffective) methods; and the passion and clarity of a natural coach. These qualities are evident in this wonderful, practical guide. I estimate you won't be disappointed in studying and applying his advice."

x2014;Craig Larman, Chief Scientist, Valtech, and author of "Applying UML and Patterns, Third Edition" (Prentice Hall, 2005) and "Agile and Iterative Development" (Addison-Wesley, 2004)

""Agile Estimating and Planning" is a critical guide on how to successfully provide value to customers of IT services. This book is filled with clear examples that are essential x2014;from project team members to the executive level."

x2014;Lou Thomas, Director, Applications Development, Farm Credit Services of America

"This work is deeply significant in that it articulates and details structured techniques to realize a simple, but profound insight x2014;planning is an iterative quest for value, rather than a perfunctory scheduling of activities. Mike presents processes to converge on this value while reducing risk and uncertainty, supporting decision making, establishing trust, and conveying information. Agile methodologies have shifted the emphasis from plans to planning, but have glossed over many of the finer details of Agile planning. Now, very simply and accessibly, Mike demonstrates how it can be done."

x2014;Sanjiv Augustine, Practice Director, Lean-Agile Consulting at CC Pace, and author of "Managing Agile Projects" (Prentice Hall, 2005)

"The techniques described in "Agile Estimating and Planning" have helped us tremendously with planning and managing our projects. It provides all you have ever wanted to know about Agile project management."

x2014;Roman Pichler, Engineering Manager, Siemens Communications

"Mike Cohn presents a highly pragmatic and logical approach to making projects successful in a world beset by uncertainty and change. With his trademark clarity and directness, Mike cuts through the management mumbo jumbo to present practical techniques that can be put into use immediately. Put the odds squarely in your favor by making Mike Cohn the planning guru on your next big project."

x2014;Pete Deemer, Vice President, Product Development, Yahoo!

"This book distills the fundamental ideas behind Agile estimating and planning, presenting them in a thoughtful and approachable manner. This is a 'must-have' book that presents clear, unambiguous, and practical advice for anyone who wants to successfully manage modern software development projects."

x2014;Scott W. Ambler, President, Ambysoft Inc.

"How do your projects go? Frustrating changes? Uncertainty? Product missing both the mark and the deadline? With insight and clarity, Mike Cohn shows how to effectively produce software that is of high business value. With agile estimation and planning, you focus effort where it really counts, and continue to do so as circumstances change."

x2014;Rick Mugridge, Rimu Research Ltd., and lead author of "Fit for Developing Software"

"We are true believers in the agile methods described in this book, and have experienced a substantially positive impact from their implementation and continued use. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in making their software development more practical and effective."

x2014;Mark M. Gutrich, President and CEO, Fast 401k, Inc.Detailed, Proven Techniques for Estimating and Planning Any Agile Project

"Agile Estimating and Planning "is the definitive, practical guide to estimating and planning agile projects. In this book, Agile Alliance cofounder Mike Cohn discusses the philosophy of agile estimating and planning and shows you exactly how to get the job done, with real-world examples and case studies.

Concepts are clearly illustrated and readers are guided, step by step, toward how to answer the following questions: What will we build? How big will it be? When must it be done? How much can I really complete by then? You will first learn what makes a good plan-and then what makes it agile.

Using the techniques in "Agile Estimating and Planning," you can stay agile from start to finish, saving time, conserving resources, and accomplishing more. Highlights include: Why conventional prescriptive planning fails and why agile planning worksHow to estimate feature size using story points and ideal days x2014;and when to use eachHow and when to re-estimateHow to prioritize features using both financial and nonfinancial approachesHow to split large features into smaller, more manageable onesHow to plan iterations and predict your team's initial rate of progressHow to schedule projects that have unusually high uncertainty or schedule-related riskHow to estimate projects that will be worked on by multiple teams

"Agile Estimating and Planning" supports any agile, semiagile, or iterative process, including Scrum, XP, Feature-Driven Development, Crystal, Adaptive Software Development, DSDM, Unified Process, and many more. It will be an indispensable resource for every development manager, team leader, and team member.

This book could have been called Estimating and Planning Agile Projects. Instead, it's called Agile Estimating and Planning. The difference may appear subtle, but it's not. The title makes it clear that the estimating and planning processes must themselves be agile. Without agile estimating and planning, we cannot have agile projects.

The book is mostly about planning, which I view as answering the question of "What should we build and by when?" However, to answer questions about planning we must also address questions of estimating ("How big is this?") and scheduling ("When will this be done?" and "How much can I have by then?").

This book is organized in seven parts and twenty-three chapters. Each chapter ends with a summary of key points and with a set of discussion questions. Because estimating and planning are meant to be whole-team activities, one of the ways I hope this book will be read is by teams who meet perhaps weekly to discuss what they've read and the questions at the end of each chapter. Because agile software development is popular worldwide, I have tried to avoid writing an overly United States-centric book. To that end, I have used the universal currency symbol, writing amounts such as ¤500 instead of perhaps $500 or €500 and so on.

Part I describes why planning is important, the problems we often encounter, and the goals of an agile approach. Chapter 1 begins the book by describing the purpose of planning, what makes a good plan, and what makes planning agile. The most important reasons why traditional approaches to estimating and planning lead to unsatisfactory results are described in Chapter 2. Finally, Chapter 3 begins with a brief recap of what agility means and then describes the high-level approach to agile estimating and planning taken by the rest of this book.

The second part introduces a main tenet of estimating, that estimates of size and duration should be kept separate. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce story points and ideal days, two units appropriate for estimating the size of the features to be developed. Chapter 6 describes techniques for estimating in story points and ideal days, and includes a description of planning poker. Chapter 7 describes when and how to re-estimate, and Chapter 8 offers advice on choosing between story points and ideal days.

Part III, "Planning for Value," offers advice on how a project team can make sure they are building the best possible product. Chapter 9 describes the mix of factors that need to be considered when prioritizing features. Chapter 10 presents an approach for modeling the financial return from a feature or feature set and how to compare financial returns so that the team works on the most valuable items first. Chapter 11 includes advice on how to assess and then prioritize the desirability of features to a product's users. Chapter 12 concludes this part with advice on how to split large features into smaller, more manageable ones.

In Part IV, we shift our attention and focus on questions around scheduling a project. Chapter 13 begins by looking at the steps involved in scheduling a relatively simple, single-team project. Next, Chapter 14 looks at how to plan an iteration. Chapters 15 and 16 look at how to select an appropriate iteration length for the project and how to estimate a team's initial rate of progress. Chapter 17 looks in detail at how to schedule a project with either a high amount of uncertainty or a greater implication to being wrong about the schedule. This part concludes with Chapter 18, which describes the additional steps necessary in estimating and planning a project being worked on by multiple teams.

Once a plan has been established, it must be communicated to the rest of the organization and the team's progress against it monitored. These are the topics of the three chapters of Part V. Chapter 19 looks specifically at monitoring the release plan, while Chapter 20 looks at monitoring the iteration plan. The final chapter in this part, Chapter 21, deals specifically with communicating about the plan and progress toward it.

Chapter 22 is the lone chapter in Part VI. This chapter argues the case for why agile estimating and planning work and stands as a counterpart to Chapter 2, which describes why traditional approaches fail so often.

Part VII, the final part, includes only one chapter. Chapter 23 is an extended case study that reasserts the main points of this book but does so in a fictional setting.

Draw the Line
By R. Williams
A 5 star review just doesn't mean anything anymore. There are some good ideas in this book, but large stretches of this book are just absurd. This thing reads like homework that was finished on the bus (you can almost see the bumps in the road). The structure of the book is completely haphazard. One minute, we are talking about doing estimates. The next minute we are trying to figure out how a project will pay for itself, then, it's on to how to split up stories that got too big. I was waiting for a sidebar with a recipe for a great chiffon cake. At the end of the chapter on estimating value, the author recommends another book and says that's where his content came from (citational plagiarism is called 'plugging,' Youngster). Then, the chapter on splitting stories made me laugh out loud in places. Things like 'split stories along data lines,' or 'split stories along priority lines' or one of the funniest 'split it along CRUD lines.' Come on.

The good part of this book is the one chapter on estimation and discussion of things like using Fibonacci for bucketing of estimates into story points, the importance of seeing estimates as relative, and the idea of doing planning poker. In short: again, it's an article that was turned into a book by a set of expansion techniques that are astounding for not being illegal, let alone questionable. And all this inside a fortress of testimonials that makes Fort Knox look lightly defended.

The Planning Approach that Refreshes
By Jean Tabaka
Better planning, as Mary Poppendieck (author of "Lean Software Development") points out, results in a higher standard of living for the individual, for the team, and for the organization. With "Agile Estimating and Planning", Mike Cohn delivers a beautifully pragmatic approach for pushing us into the notion that this higher standard of living is completely attainable for our software development projects in this lifetime.

Mike's earlier book, "User Stories Applied" has been one of my most cited books when working with teams new to agile software development. Understanding the usefulness of the story concept as the base unit of function delivery has put these new teams in a good steady stride for being realiably realistic about their work delivery toward feature completion.

With Mike's "AE&P", I now have a fully referenceable guide that moves the team story planning pragmatics to the next level: bringing multiple planning approaches to bear at multiple levels for multiple measures of software feature acceptance and completion. In his usual style, Mike delivers his guidance with wonderfully accessible non-software analogies. For example, "How long is a football game?" and "How long will it take me to move my pile of dirt?" for understanding the distinction between effort (or ideal hours/days)and duration (total calendar hours/days). These simple mental models set the stage for ruthlessly correcting the many misunderstood atrributes of planning and its life partner estimating. Having shattered the myths of task-based Gantt Charts, PERT charts, and Work Breakdown Structures as completely repeatable prediction models for planning and estimation, Mike rebuilds the planning toolbox with practices that truly work. He buoys his practices (such as Planning Poker and frequent replanning) with the de rigueur reinforcements of appropriate metrics (e.g. how many tests did we complete in the last iteration, how many story points did we complete in our worst iteration, how are we tracking today with our estimates of what is left to do) that really guide teams in how to steadily improve their planning acumen.

Because my passion in agile software development has focused more and more on the importance of participatory decision-making in order to make planning commitments stick, I am particularly grateful that Mike sets a high collaborative bar with regard to how team's must work in order to create effective and actionable plans. Guidance on collaboration, high visibility, and continuous inspection are woven into all the practices in Mike's book, start to finish.

If I can leave you with only one piece of advice from "AE&P", take Mike's "Dozen Guidelines for Agile Estimating and Planning" (Chapter 22) and nail them to your team's door. In fact, nail them to your business partner or product manager's door. If you allowed me a second piece of advice: read through his excellent case study that follows in Chapter 23. And then, if you forgave me one final piece of advice: be prepared to start enjoying your new standard of living.

Pactical, Easy read. Answers what, why and how.
By Animikh Sen
The book is well structured and easy to read. In my humble opinion, it comes with a strong "buy" rating for any Agile practitioner or a current PMI certified person who wants to contribute to the knowledge economy of ever changing requirements. The book is right sized (finish in a coast to coast trip in US). Practical in its content, it provides lots of examples and case studies, from software as well as non software fields to illustrate the concepts. The detailed case study at the end of the book is invaluable.

Several chapters were much thought provoking, specially how to handle team dynamics and cross team estimation. The book did not right fully delve into any details of that, it's a topic for another time.

Part I of the books sets up the context.

Part II details on estimating the size, and the techniques and tools for doing that; in fact it comes with some simple tools, which can be really customized and expanded quickly.

Part III caters to what I call "value add planning" planning the work by prioritizing by business value, The books touches the concepts of financial project analysis, however there are better books for that, and the author provides the references.

Part IV brings in the concept of time, and the handling of "estimating for effort" and estimating for duration" is simply superb. Also an entire chapter is dedicated to Buffering and its need and for multi-team projects.

Part V presents tools and motivations for monitoring and communicating.

Part VI presents why Agile Planning works, and honestly I skipped it, expect the guidelines ( Page 254) which I read to validate my knowledge.

If there is one thing that I would change in the book, it would be the story point example with dogs. It would be a little confusing if you have no idea how a Great Dane would be different from a Duchshund! But hey, I think the book gets the message across very well.

What I would like to see in the second edition-- softcopy of some tools that goes with the book, may be some templates that can be customized...but then again, you should not be in this business unless you are able to cook these tools up yourself !!
