Preface

The Grid Computing discipline involves the actual networking services and connections of a potentially unlimited number of ubiquitous computing devices within a "grid." This new innovative approach to computing can be most simply thought of as a massively large power "utility" grid, such as the one that provides power to our homes and businesses every day. This delivery of utility-based power has become second nature to many of us, worldwide. We know that by simply walking into a room and turning on the lights, the power will be directed to the proper devices of our choice at that moment in time (on demand). In this same utility fashion, Grid Computing openly seeks, and is capable of, adding an infinite number of computing devices into any grid environment, adding to the computing capability and problem resolution tasks within the operational grid environment, and at the exact time it is needed (on demand).

What is the Importance of this Book?

The last few years we have witnessed the emergence of Grid Computing as an innovative extension to distributed computing technology, for computing resource sharing among participants in a virtualized collection of organizations. This technology leverages a combination of hardware/software virtualization, and the distributed sharing of those virtualized resources. These resources can include all elements of computing, including: Hardware, software, applications, networking services, pervasive devices, and complex footprints of computing power. Grid Computing is one technology enabler for some of the most innovative and powerful emerging industrial solution approaches, including the IBM On Demand strategies,1 HP utility computing,2 and Sun N1 technologies.3

The emergence of open standards has a great influence on this computing technology, especially in providing seamless Grid interoperability and Grid integration facilities. We could find that technologies of Grid Computing are still evolving; however, the alignment with industry-wide open standards, and the commercial interests, quickly placed this technology into a forerunning state for infrastructure and technology development. The most notable standard we have seen in this area of Grid is the Global Grid Forum's4 Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) initiative.

Until today, most of the work in Grid Computing has been concentrated at the academic, and standards level discussion and building custom solutions. However, the emergence of commercial utility services and the requirement for alignment with the rest of the organizational computing infrastructures hasten the development of open standards and interoperable commercial Grid solutions. This book is a detailed discussion on all aspects of Grid Computing, technology, applications, disciplines, and infrastructures. In this book we provide full treatment to covering the evolution of Grid Computing, existing Grid infrastructure components, emerging Grid service standards, and Grid architectures. In addition, we will explore detailed discussions on many prominent Grid middleware solutions.

What You Can Expect from This Book

We, the authors of this book, hope that you will find reading this book, an interesting and thought-provoking experience. In this book, we are introducing you to the basic Grid Computing principles, and to the emerging technology standards for Grid Computing. Readers will find this discussion interesting with a progressive evolution of technologies, discussed in this book in a concise, hard-hitting, and to-the-point fashion. We believe this will help the readers clearly understand the basic Grid Computing principles, the existing/emerging Grid standards, and their various usages models. We must be aware that the Grid standards are complex with a number of interrelations among themselves and other emerging standards such as XML and Web services. As we will see, this is a fast moving target and we should try to focus on this fact, early, so that we won't miss the opportunity to create Grid services and infrastructures suitable for each of our respective organizations or Grid initiatives.

In general, this book will explore:

  • The basic concepts of Grid Computing:Grid Computing discipline has been evolving over the past few years as a means of immense computing power and distributed data sharing facilities. We will discuss the many core aspects of these infrastructure components, and the high-level services built upon the Grid infrastructure as networking services.
  • How the Grid Computing is evolving as an open standard for resource sharing:The Grid Computing discipline is evolving. The focus is now on seamless interoperability and integration among participants of the Grid for better resources sharing. This is exceptionally challenging and a number of organizations are working collectively to provide an open and extensible standard and test beds for the Grid.
  • The influence of emerging technology standards on Grid infrastructure:Computing is always involving some process and form of evolution. New software standards and architectures are continually evolving to meet the requirements of global industries. The most notable and latest in this row are the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and the XML/Web services standards. These architectures and standards, as the reader will soon see, have tremendous influence in the emerging open Grid Computing standards.
  • The new Grid architecture and infrastructure:Based on the experience drawn form earlier Grid infrastructures, implementations, and the influence of the emerging open standards and technologies, the Grid computing standards organizations are designing an Open Grid Service Architecture (OGSA), and Open Grid Service Infrastructure (OGSI) for Grid computing. These important contributions will soon become the core platform for all the next generation Grid Computing technologies.
  • The most prominent toolkits and middleware solutions that will impact the Grid adoption:These open standards and technologies are not enough; we need real middleware solutions and high-level services using these standards and technologies. The most prominent middleware technology that exists today is Globus Toolkit.5 We will explore the details on this toolkit's robust architecture, and programming model capabilities to enable the latest Grid standards on the OGSI. In addition, we will explore some architectural concepts of the OGSI.NET6 toolkit, another notable implementation of the OGSI standard.

cheerleading more than technical
By I. Christou
The reason I purchased this book was a review I read in the IEEE Software journal, that recommended highly this book as a technical book that even steps the reader through an example implementation GRID service. Well, the first part of the book is the usual "GRID vision" hand-waving how GRID-based computing will realize the concept of "utility computing" where you turn on the switch, and presto, all the computing cycles you were starving for, are there, running your scientific or engineering code or whatever...

The book unfortunately is not well-written. Far too often, sentences are not syntactically correct, obfuscating the authors' intents. The book is definitely not suited as a technical reference, because by reading it there is no way you can implement a GRID "HelloWorld" service. And even when you read Sotomayor's tutorial on GRID services, that actually does guide you through your first GRID service using Java WS-Core, all you've done is figure out how to implement Web-services running on GT4. No mention of distributed computing, how to take advantage of parallelism inherent in a computation etc. etc.

So, overall, the book serves mostly as a layman's (or manager's) introduction into what GRID-computing wishes it will eventually be.

Comprehensive Description, but too Heavyweight?
By W Boudville
Grid computing is extensively described here as a means of providing high powered utility computing on demand. Currently, its potential is mostly unrealised. Many companies and universities have different grid implementations, as described by the authors. The universities' main motivation is to dragoon enough computing resources for hard research problems. While in the commercial sector, computer companies like IBM want to sell on demand access as a means of entering a hopefully vast new market.
The grid approaches in the book collectively can be contrasted with p2p computing. Grid systems tend to use more diverse and powerful hardware and relatively small number of users. Think of this as the high end, while p2p is low end (e.g. the SETI desktop application). The book describes the vast amount of effort that has gone into devising grid standards and the various toolkits, most notably Globus.
A potential problem which may occur to the reader of this book is the sheer complexity of the grid approach. Its proponents argue that this is necessary complexity. But perhaps a p2p methodology might be easier to understand and use.
An analogy is with the X.400 and X.500 email and directory standards. While these are used by some companies, many have not done so. Due to the complexity and slowness. Too heavyweight. The danger for grid computing is meeting a similar fate. It may end up occupying a small high value niche, but no more.

> > > > Destined to be a classic book in its field.
By Richard Murch
The authors have written a fine book on the potential, execution and practicality of Grid or Utility Computing. It is large ( 400 pages ) and well written book, technically accurate and blends well with other industry strategies such as on demand and Autonomic Computing. The chapters on open standards are particularly strong, well thought out and presented. The book is designed well and book production, diagrams, layout is nothing short of highest quality - in short, excellent.
The prospect of true utility computing is within reach and technically feasible. The authors bring together best deployment practices, practical guidance on integrating existing resources, and applicable case studies. This book goes a long way to assisting that projection and should become a classic standard in the field.
Full kudos~! - and a doff of the hat to both authors.

Praise for Building Clustered Linux Systems

"The author does an outstanding job of presenting a very complicated subject. I very much commend this work. The author sets the pace and provides vital resources and tips along the way. He also has a very good sense of humor that is crafted in the text in such a way that makes the reading enjoyable just when the subject may demand a break. This book should be a requirement for those that are clustering or considering clustering and especially those considering investing a great deal of financial resource toward that goal."

–Joe Brazeal, Information Technician III, Southwest Power Pool

"This book is for Beginner and Intermediate level system administrators, engineers, and researchers, who want to learn how to build Linux clusters. The book covers everything very well."

–Ibrahim Haddad, Senior Researcher, Ericsson Corporate Unit of Research

"Nothing that I know of exists yet that covers this subject in as much depth and detail. The practical ‘hands-on’ approach of this book on how to build a Linux cluster makes this a very valuable reference for a very popular, highly demanded technology."

–George Vish, II, Linux Curriculum Program Manager and Senior Education Consultant, HP

"In my opinion there is a significant lack of literature on this subject. Most of the currently available books are either dated or do not address the complete picture of the range of decisions that must go into building a Linux cluster. I feel comfortable recommending this to anyone interested in building a Linux cluster to better understand both the technical aspects of building and designing a Linux cluster, but also the business aspects of the same."

–Randall Splinter Ph.D., Senior Solution Architect, HP

"The author has set a precedent in the cluster design and integration process that is lacking in the industry today."

From the Inside Flap

Welcome! This book will introduce you to building computing solutions from groups of interconnected systems running the Linux operating system. If you want to learn practical information about building this type of solution, often called a Linux "cluster," read on!

I am writing this book because I believe the time has come for Linux cluster solutions to move into the mainstream information technology (IT) world from their current homes in universities and research institutes. This cannot happen until Linux clustered solutions, or "clusters," are introduced and de-mystified for mainstream system administrators and IT solution architects. If this information is what you are looking for, read on!

In this book, we examine some of the architectures, processes, and collections of technologies that may be used to build clustered Linux systems. We examine the reasons that Linux may make the best choice as the base operating system for a cluster. We will do this while attempting to avoid the assumptions and jargon that currently make building Linux clusters the domain of a small club of high-performance computing specialists. If this approach is what you are looking for, read on!

Learning to build Linux clusters is a journey, like learning any other complex technical task. One of the most difficult parts in any journey is just getting started. There is a folk saying that goes something like, "A map does you no good if you don't know where you are." This book will pick a starting point, identify some of the opportunities for Linux cluster solutions, define a process for creating a cluster solution, introduce you to some of the necessary components, and give concrete examples of cluster design and construction.

Let's begin the journey, shall we?

About This Book

The intent of this book is to provide an introduction to clustered Linux systems for an audience that may not have any experience working with this type of solution. A cluster comprises multiple physical systems, interconnected and configured to act in concert with each other as if they were a single resource. Throughout, I assume a basic understanding of computer hardware, network, and operating system concepts or the ability to research required topics. I do not, however, assume previous experience with clustered systems.

This book is not intended to be an introduction to Linux system administration or TCP/IP network administration. I will make every attempt to point you to appropriate reference books and external sources of information as we proceed. Experience administering Linux or Unix systems and an understanding of network connections is essential to getting the most useful information from this book.

This book attempts to tie together the "big picture" for those system administrators and system architects that already understand the individual elements of that picture. Our goal is to learn how to configure and use Linux subsystems and tools on multiple physical computers to create the appearance of a single system "clustered" solution. This is a potentially complex endeavor that relies foremost on understanding the basic operation of the Linux operating system and subsystems which may involve network connections.

Notation and Conventions

Throughout this book we will examine only clusters based on the Linux operating system. Indeed, that is why the title of the book is "Building Clustered Linux Systems." To avoid the constant repetition of the phrases "Linux clusters" and "Linux cluster," wherever I use the term "cluster" I am referring to a Linux cluster, unless specifically noted otherwise.

Whenever I need to illustrate Linux commands, subsystem names, command-line options, or URLs for Web sites, I will use the courier font to set the information apart from regular text. I will use the courier italic font for text that requires specific values to be substituted, such as "-kickstart". Both bold and italic are used in the text for emphasis.

Using This Book

The initial chapter introduces the concept of a cluster and defines the term "cluster" as we will use it. Part one introduces the hardware components that make up a cluster, along with an architectural model that shows the relationship between the individual hardware components in various types of clusters. Part two applies Linux and open-source software to the software architecture of a cluster, pointing out available solutions and approaches. Part three discusses the economics and physical construction of cluster hardware, detailing the design and implementation details.

If you are an experienced system architect, and are anxious to get right to the Linux part of building clusters, start out with part two. If you wish to review hardware components and cluster architecture, begin at part one and progress through the remainder of the book. If you want to see details and processes for implementing clusters, you may start with part three, then progress to parts one and two, as desired.

Finally a good Linux Clustering book
By Trevor Goodchild
This book is very well organized, gets right to the point, has some dry humor (a tradition in technical books) but its not overdone (overdoing it is also a tradition). You really couldn't ask for more. The thing I like most about this book, is the author is very direct. I have some experience with the publishing industry, and authors are *PAID BY THE PAGE*. Which gives them a tremendous incentive to dilute the material into unreadable crap. This author avoids this and deserves the highest praise for doing so.

Outstanding value
By Yoshiro Aoki
This book is a very straightforward, clearly written and valuable introduction to Linux clustering. Geared toward system folks, it also provides numerous `on-ramps' into the basics of clustering to accommodate quick, relevant review of supporting technology for the reader. It is essentially a map for getting from start to finish in any Linux cluster project. Specific situations, conditions, and expectations differ across projects, of course, and such points are identified well in the text with pointers to additional information provided.

Scientific computing (HPC) is addressed well, and is more of the topic than any other cluster flavor, though the others are discussed as well (after all, who wouldn't want a side order of high availability with their HPC?). My cluster background personally was mostly high availability (Microsoft Wolfpack), so I appreciated the HPC overview, especially since I was already building a Linux cluster for my bio-algorithms that depended on HPC. This book helped me get every gflop out of my admittedly 2ndhand student hardware.

If you are getting involved with a cluster project or have one potentially on the horizon, and need a clear overview of what may lay ahead, pick up this book. For its measly sticker price, you get two solid discussion weeks with an expert. Go calculate that one:)

Hard to beat. Full Marks !!
By Nils Valentin
The book describes in simple reproducable steps how to build a medium to medium big sized cluster. It also devides the clusters into the three main types,

HPC *High performance computing,
High Throughput and
High Availability cluster

and describes their usages. The book is describing cluster projects more from a bird view and gives a whole sight overview including budget calculations, comparing several architectures also by their technology and environmental conditions (Power usage, Cooling requirements etc.).

The book is not only hard to beat but also the perfect companion to the Linux Enterprise Cluster from Karl Kopper. While Karls book is a bit more practical it concentrates only on the technical configuration of "small" clusters.

Here is where Lubke comes in and extends that knowledge by the many environmental factors *Budget, technical considerations, Calculations, Estimates, Planning what to expect from your hardware *Performance, Weight, Heat, Flooring considerations etc.

After you read the book, you will have learned all necessary steps to build your own clusters. The "only" thing left to you is to put the ship to water ;-)

An incredible book and a real eye opener !!

Preface

The LabVIEW Style Book is a comprehensive reference on recommended LabVIEW development practices. It contains guidelines designed to optimize the ease-of-use, efficiency, readability, maintainability, robustness, simplicity, and performance of LabVIEW applications. The book provides thorough explanations of each guideline, including examples and illustrations. The material leverages the work of the early pioneers of the LabVIEW community1, has evolved from many years of use by Bloomy Controls2, and has been reviewed by esteemed representatives of the LabVIEW community3. I invite you to learn from the experiences of myself and the staff at Bloomy Controls, Inc., by reading The LabVIEW Style Book. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Intended Reader

Intended readers include developers, managers, and organizations that develop or use LabVIEW applications. Developers that have learned and successfully applied the fundamentals of LabVIEW can use this material to learn LabVIEW best practices. Experienced beginners can use this book to form good programming habits early in their LabVIEW careers. You must have a working knowledge of fundamental LabVIEW principles and terminology, as instructed in a LabVIEW Basics I and II hands-on course4, and experience developing and deploying applications. Intermediate developers, who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready to take their skills to the next level, will learn the most from this material. No doubt you have experienced the power and flexibility of LabVIEW and are ready to concentrate on style. Advanced developers will strongly identify with the contents, reinforce their knowledge and experience, and have a useful reference to share with colleagues. You might use The LabVIEW Style Book to help reduce the training and support burden you might have within your organization, to focus on your primary responsibilities. Managers and Organizations that employ multiple developers and users can gain maximum benefit by standardizing on these guidelines across the organization. Specifically, an organization might adopt the recommended guidelines and reference as its standard and require that all applications, whether received from internal or remote developers, consultants, or third-party systems integrators, conform to these guidelines. This approach ensures quality and consistency throughout an organization and helps satisfy industry quality standards.

Organization

The chapters of The LabVIEW Style Book present guidelines and examples organized by topic. Chapter 1, "Introduction," discusses the significance of style, including its relationship to ease of use, efficiency, readability, maintainability, robustness, simplicity, and the performance of the completed application. Chapter 2, "Prepare for Good Style," presents considerations that influence style before you begin programming, including specifications, configuration of the LabVIEW environment, and project and file organization. Additionally, it presents a specialized standard for LabVIEW project specifications. Chapter 3, "Front Panel Style," Chapter 4, "Block Diagram," and Chapter 5, "Icon and Connector," present the basics for VI layout and development. Chapter 3 provides guidelines for layout, text, color, and navigation. It distinguishes separate guidelines for the front panels of GUI VIs and subVIs, where appropriate. Chapter 4 presents guidelines for layout, wiring, and data flow, along with techniques for optimizing data flow. Chapter 5 discusses good icon development practices and editing shortcuts, and covers standard connector terminal patterns, assignments, and conventions.

Chapter 6, "Data Structures," provides guidelines on data type selection and array and cluster development. A methodology is integrated with several useful reference tables for simplifying data type selection and configuration. Guidelines and examples for optimizing VIs involving complex data structures also are presented in this chapter. Chapter 7, "Error Handling," Chapter 8, "Design Patterns," and Chapter 9, "Documentation," expand upon the basics. Chapter 7 presents comprehensive guidelines for thorough error handling, along with special considerations for error handling within subVIs. Chapter 8 discusses common VI architectures that promote good style, beginning with simple subVI design patterns and progressing to single and multiple loop design patterns. It also describes several variations of the LabVIEW state machine. Additionally, Chapter 8 presents three complex application frameworks, including a dynamic framework that uses plug-ins, a multiple-loop framework, and a modular multiple-loop framework that uses loop-subVIs. Chapter 9 provides a summary of guidelines to facilitate source code documentation. Chapter 10, "Code Reviews," presents manual and automated methods of reviewing source code and enforcing style rules. The LabVIEW VI Analyzer Toolkit, an add-on tool that integrates with the LabVIEW environment for analyzing VIs, is discussed. An analysis task is configured and an application is evaluated using the VI Analyzer.

Appendixes include a glossary, a style rules summary, and a bibliography. Appendix A, "Glossary," provides a list of terms and definitions; many LabVIEW and software industry terms are evolutionary and context sensitive. Any term that seems specialized or ambiguous is defined where it first appears within the book and used consistently in successive chapters. The definitions are repeated in the glossary for ease of reference. Appendix B, "Style Rules Summary," lists the style guidelines presented in each chapter. Good - needs editing
By reniam
I get the feeling the other reviews are written by the author and his friends. Some are just a little too glowing.

This book is good, but needs editing because it is very long winded; using twice as many words than necessary to get the point across (the author is always stressing efficiency). Many of the "rules" are subjective and should be called suggestions. For example, the author has a rule disabling "Show dots at wire junctions". I like the dots. The VI's are not included with the book. Some are available from the author's company site, but only after registration.

I recommend the book but, be prepared to spend the time required for reading.

WARNING: NOT IN COLOR
By Scott Dobbins
The "Look Inside" feature that allows you to preview the book is deceptive. It shows color illustrations. The book is black and white. This was obviously done to sell more books. Since LabVIEW conveys so much information in a block diagram through the use of color, much information will be LOST trying to decipher colors, which indicate data types. "Have phun!" as they say. This was a very poor decision on the part of the author. Was the motivation to save publishing costs and increase profits? What about the motivation to educate readers? Whatever. Sorry, I don't have time to correlate after-the-fact color PDFs of figures from the book, even if they are provided free with the book purchase. The book should have been printed in color. Especially at this price. Duh. Want a good review? Do things right, and you'll earn one. Good thing I found this out before purchase...

Not as described on Amazon
By Merrill H. Tucker
The text book I received did not have any color diagrams or figures. Yet the text refers to colors regarding contrast, etc. When you look at a clip of a preview of the book, it is in color. So why is the real thing in black and white except for the cover?

Extremely well done
By Finance Prof
Time series models are a powerful tool for analyzing financial and economic data, but they tend to be difficult for students to grasp. Most texts are rather unhelpful as they are either "preaching to the choir" by assuming some familiarity with the concepts, or they assume a very mathematically gifted audience and spend not nearly enough time fleshing out foundational ideas that students do not find obvious. As an undergraduate economics student many years ago I enrolled in a time series class, only to drop it a month later because the textbook was written at a level that rendered it totally useless to an uninitiated beginner (and the instructor was of little help, unfortunately). Later, in grad school, I took time series analysis and had a wonderful experience. I have always believed that if you have either a great teacher or a great textbook (both would be the ideal!), this material should be accessible to Business masters students and undergraduates from finance and a number of other fields and backgrounds. I had all but given up on finding such a textbook, until coming across this offering by Gloria Gonzalez-Rivera.

After reading through this excellent text, I believe I could teach time series from this text without leaving students behind in the process. The author very carefully and methodically builds a foundation from basic principles, never assuming students will just get it without a detailed explanation. Examples based on real data that illustrate the concepts are given throughout. I have also been a big fan of Eviews software for the last 15 years, and this text integrates the use of EViews throughout. Perfect! I am considering a new course in financial econometrics at my university that would be largely based on this text. Prior to the appearance of this text, the time series component of such a course would have been much less ambitious. Superbly done!

Rent is good, purchase is not
By Trang Thai
There are too few textbooks on Forecasting, maybe that is why the book is priced so high and it might not be worth buying it.
But the renting service helps solve the problem. For someone who works hard and spend time to read most/all of it, one semester is more than enough. The format, fonts, and language are all nice. The instructions for EViews are very clear and step-by-step based. Examples and sources of data are also interesting and helpful.

From practical and applicable viewpoint, it is a good book. From theoretical viewpoint, there are some drawbacks (per my professor). Denotations and derivations are not as strong as hard core fundamental theory books. But that is the trade-off. Overall, good book, great renting service with several reminders before return date, plus option to rent for 1-2 more weeks.
