The goal of the second edition of this book is the same as that of the first edition, with updated material in several areas that reflects the ever-advancing technology of internal combustion engines. This book was written to be used as an applied thermoscience textbook in a one-semester, college-level, undergraduate engineering course on internal combustion engines. It provides the material needed for a basic understanding of the operation of internal combustion engines. Students are assumed to have knowledge of fundamental thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics as a prerequisite to get maximum benefit from the text. This book can also be used for self-study or as a reference book in the field of engines.

Contents include the fundamentals of most types of internal combustion engines, with a major emphasis on reciprocating engines. Both spark ignition and compression ignition engines are covered, as are those operating on four-stroke cycles and on two-stroke cycles, and ranging in size from small model airplane engines to the largest stationary engines. Rocket engines and jet engines are not included. Because of the large number of engines that are used in automobiles and other vehicles, a major emphasis is placed on these.

The book is divided into 11 chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 give an introduction, terminology, definitions, and basic operating characteristics. These are followed in Chapter 3 with detailed analysis of basic engine cycles. Chapter 4 reviews fundamental thermochemistry as it applies to engine operation and engine fuels. Chapters 5 through 9 follow the air-fuel charge as it passes sequentially through an engine, including intake, motion within a cylinder, combustion, exhaust, and emissions. Engine heat transfer, friction, and lubrication are covered in Chapters 10 and 11. Each chapter includes solved example problems and historical notes, followed by a set of unsolved review problems. Also included at the end of each chapter are open-ended problems that require limited design application, in keeping with the modern engineering education trend of emphasizing design through the entire curriculum. These design problems can be used as minor weekly exercises or as major group projects.

Fueled by intensive commercial competition and increasingly strict government regulations on emissions and safety, the field of engine technology is constantly changing. It is difficult to stay knowledgeable about all advancements in engine design, materials, controls, and fuel development that we experience at an ever-increasing rate. During the years as the outline for this text evolved, continuous changes were required as new developments occurred. Those advancements that are covered in this book include tie Miller cycle, lean burn engines, hybrid vehicles, 42-volt electrical systems, variable valve timing, fuel cell technology, gasoline direct injection, variable compression ratios, cylinder cutout, thermal storage, etc. Advancements and technological changes will continue to occur, and further updating of this text will be required periodically.

Information in the book represents an accumulation of general material collected by the author over a period of years while teaching courses and working in research and development in the field of internal combustion engines in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. During this time, information has been collected from many sources, including conferences, newspapers, personal communication, books, technical periodicals, research, product literature, television, etc. This information became the basis for the outline and notes used in the teaching of a class about internal combustion engines. These class notes, in turn, evolved into the general outline for this textbook. A list of references from the technical literature from which specific information for this book was taken is included at the back of the book. Several references were of special importance in the development of these notes and are suggested for additional reading and more in-depth study. For keeping up with information about the latest research and development in automobile and internal combustion engine technology, publications by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers) are highly recommended; reference ll is very good. For general information about most engine subjects, references 40, 58, 93,100,116 are recommended. On certain subjects, some of these references go into too much depth to be manageable in a one-semester course. Some of the information is slightly out of date, but overall, these are very informative references. For historical information about engines and automobiles in general, references 29, 45, 97, 102 are suggested. General data, formulas, and principles of engineering thermodynamics and heat transfer are used at various places throughout the text. Most undergraduate textbooks on these subjects would supply the needed information. References 63, 90 were used by the author.

In preparing this second edition, the author has followed the suggestions for improvements made by reviewers, when possible. Following the suggestion made by several reviewers, many more data dealing with real engines are included, using the actual figures from technical literature when possible.

In keeping with the trend of the world, the international system of units (SI) are used throughout the book, often supplemented with English units. Most research and development of engines is done using SI units, and this is reflected in the technical literature. The consumer market, however, still commonly uses English units, such as horsepower, miles per gallon, and cubic inch displacement, particularly in the automobile market. A conversion table of SI and English units for common parameters used in engine work is included in the appendix at the back of the book.

The reader should remember that many of the mathematical formulas used in this book and other technical literature are only models of what is actually happening. Often these are simplified models of very complex occurrences (e.g., chemical reactions, engine cycles, flow in cylinders, etc.). These models often allow us to relate important variables and solve many technical problems, but should not be used beyond their intended range.

We have entered an exciting revolutionary period of internal combustion engine technology, largely brought about by the use of computer controls. For over 100 years, most combustion engines operated on the same basic four-stroke Otto or Diesel cycles. These engines had a fixed displacement, a fixed compression ratio, and fixed valve actuation controlled with a camshaft. The major improvement experienced during this time was higher thermal efficiency, brought about by better fuels and higher compression ratios. Now at the start of the twenty-first century, we suddenly have engines with variable displacement, variable compression ratios, variable valve control, and other technological advancements; and we have computer power to control these variables. The challenge to today's automobile and engine engineers is to develop new engine concepts that utilize and optimize these new technologies. We must understand the basic concepts, but we must not limit ourselves to evolutionary improvements of these concepts.

The author would like to express his gratitude to the many people who have influenced him and helped in the writing of this book. First, I thank Dorothy, who was always there, along with John, Tim, Becky, and Chad. I thank the people who reviewed the original book manuscript of the first edition, and those who reviewed the book in preparation of this second edition. The suggestions for additions and improvements that these people made have resulted in a better text. Although I have never met them, I am indebted to authors J. B. Heywood, C. R. Ferguson, E. F. Obert, and R. Stone. The books these men have written about internal combustion engines have certainly influenced the content of this textbook. I thank my father, who many years ago introduced me to the field of automobiles and generated a lifelong interest. I thank Earl of Capital City Auto Electric for carrying on the tradition.

It Was A Required Book
By soccer72727
It was a required book for class. It definitely covers the basics but don't expect it to cover more in depth parts of engines, such as supersonic air and nozzles. Maybe they avoid it because that's more specifically for carburetors but they should have had a chapter on it.

Great Book
By William L. Morris
I took the initiative to buy a book on IC engines to teach myself the fundamentals of how they work. This book explains all of the basic principles involved. The author's writing style is down to earth and remains on an undergraduate level. The book is filled with diagrams for the reader to visualize what is being said. The examples solved in the chapters are helpful in solving most of the problems at the end of each chatper. I haven't read any other books on IC fundamentals so I can't make a comparison, but I don't have any complaints about Mr. Pulkrabek's work.

Good but lacking
By Nolan
I used this book for my undergraduate IC engines course. It is well written, well put together, and concise. That being said Pulkrabek leaves out a lot when it comes to the actual calculations. This would be good for getting a general knowledge of IC engine cycles but for more advanced study Heywood's text is much more comprehensive. I used Heywood's text for my master's thesis.

" Stacy Perman has done some first-rate research, uncovering and explaining the significant nexus between Israel's military intelligence efforts and the high-tech innovation that has become a hallmark of the Israeli economy. There are valuable business lessons to be learned throughout these pages for organizations—be they companies or countries—hoping to build a high-tech base for their economies. Above all, there is superb drama in Spies, Inc. and plenty of insight into the inner workings of an engine for innovation."

— ROBERT SLATER, AUTHOR OF MICROSOFT REBOOTED: HOW BILL GATES AND STEVE BALLMER REINVENTED THEIR COMPANY AND JACK WELCH & THE G.E. WAY: MANAGEMENT INSIGHTS AND LEADERSHIP SECRETS OF THE LEGENDARY CEO

" Spies, Inc. is both a compelling tale of high-tech espionage and an insightful business manual for the twenty-first century. As Stacy Perman chronicles the derring-do of a band of Israeli intelligence operatives, she shows how the country's fight for survival has forced it to think and act with brash creativity— both on and off the battlefield."

— JOSHUA HAMMER, JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF, NEWSWEEK, AND AUTHOR OF A SEASON IN BETHLEHEM: UNHOLY WAR IN A SACRED PLACE

In Spies, Inc. former Time and Business 2.0 writer Stacy Perman reveals the spellbinding story of the Israeli military and 8200, the ultra-secret high-tech intelligence unit whose alumni helped create a number of the groundbreaking technologies behind today's information revolution. An incredible tale in its own right, 8200 is also a remarkable case study in innovation, offering compelling lessons for every business.

Likened to the NSA in the U.S., 8200 was established to capture, decipher, and analyze enemy transmissions. But unlike the NSA, 8200 did not have an endless font of resources at its disposal...and, due to secrecy, it couldn't generally buy "off-the-shelf" as a matter of procedure. Instead, it invented and customized many of its own technologies around the unique challenges of a nation that exists on a constant war-footing.

Along the way, its soldiers learned to come up with breakthroughs under crushing pressure and challenges. They brought this same sense of purpose under fire and creative improvisation in creating complex systems to the civilian world where they created top-line technology companies in a number of areas, including wireless communications and security.

Whispers of these secret Israeli electronic warriors swept venture capital circles in the 1990s, as a stunning number of Israeli tech startups bore fruit...many founded by 8200 veterans. Now, Stacy Perman tells this incredible story...revealing the techniques of entrepreneurship on the fly, when failure is not an option.

Read it as a spy story. Read it as a history story. Read it as a business story. However you read it, you won't be able to put it down.

Spies, Inc.: PrefacePreface

I first came across unit 8200 when I wrote a magazine piece chronicling Israel’s high-tech boom. It was 2000, and there was a cataclysmic buzz going on about this tiny, defiant nation that had in a very short period of time lept onto the global stage as one of the world’s most dynamic technology clusters. At the time, Israeli startups numbered in the thousands, and the country placed third behind the United States and Canada in the number of companies listed on NASDAQ. There was something big going on inside of this small nation. Undeniably, the driving force behind much of this was the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and, in particular, its elite technological units. However, there was one that stood out—unit 8200—and although it had remained in the shadows for decades, it seemed to cast the strongest light over much of the dynamism that was happening in Israel.

The IDF plays a wide-ranging and singularly exceptional role in Israel, but there was something fundamentally unique and interesting going on in this secretive intelligence unit that has been compared to the National Security Agency (NSA) in the United States. While the list of world-class technologies and companies that could trace their lineage to the unit was certainly remarkable in its own right, it appeared to be just a small thread that was part of a longer string. Israel’s particular set of geopolitical and historical circumstances had shaped a very distinctive kind of innovative thinking. The military was its most evident expression, and unit 8200 proved to be its most explicit example. This creative entrepreneurial character that had served Israel so well in war and defense was propelling the nation in a new direction. But the story didn’t begin with the high-tech boom, and it didn’t end with its crash. Actually, it seemed to me that the story began earlier. What were the forces at play? Here was a young immigrant nation, poor in every conceivable measure and surrounded by hostile neighbors. Yet, it had a deep and rich heritage of innovation. If Israel, under siege, could create world-class universities and research institutions and breakthroughs in the fields of medicine and science and technology, might there be lessons for the rest of us? (After all, in a 2004 Forbes magazine survey of the world’s leading companies, broken down by region, the Middle East had nine— eight were Israeli.)

I was intrigued, and I found that there was a deeper and broader story to be told about this incongruous nation of innovators. A significant place to begin was with the military, which repeatedly led me to unit 8200. How did it come to pass that an intelligence unit sitting smack dab inside a military infrastructure turned out to be one of the nation’s most distinctive schools for entrepreneurs and an incubator for innovative ideas? As the saying goes, business is like war, and in Israel, the unique intersection of surviving in a hostile region and the unrelenting pressure to innovate to defend itself had broader implications. As it turns out, espionage, counterterrorism, and defense had very real business lessons. It was worth examining this connection because innovation is one of the most important parts of business, and here it was found in a military structure.

This was not an easy subject to cover. For one, although unit 8200 has been mentioned more publicly in recent years, it remains, for the most part, classified. For years it was forbidden to talk about the unit, and the time it had spent in total secrecy continues to cast a pall over its public image. Although the high-tech boom cracked open the wall of silence that had surrounded this unit for decades, many of its former members remain reluctant to discuss their time in its service. One former soldier told me that one of the reasons so many unit alumni ended up working together after leaving the unit was simply because nobody could talk about what they did there to outsiders. There was a secret language among soldiers, and a resume was not part of it. To research this topic in any detail required the trust of several former members of the unit, and I thank them for handing over their stories to me.

The individual cases and stories (or rather, what can be told) are not meant to undermine state security, but rather are to illuminate the machinery, the cog behind the wheel. They are a metaphor for the way innovation has taken root in Israel through circumstance and history, and for a way of thinking and what it says about this place that continues to defy all odds and expectations. Since the subject was a sensitive one, I consulted with Israeli military authorities, and, as a result, some modifications to the manuscript were made.

A number of my interviews took place at cafés, others at company offices and boardrooms, and not a few at army bases and the Kirya, the Israeli defense complex in central Tel Aviv. Many individuals requested that only their first names be used, and others asked not to be identified at all. For the purpose of clarification, in the latter case I have given these individuals an assumed name. However, whenever possible, I have identified individuals in full. I spent almost nine months in Israel in 2003 and the early part of 2004 researching open source documents and conducting interviews, nearly 100 of them in all, for this book.

It was a surreal time. Suicide bombings continued apace, and Israeli military reprisals were a constant. War with Iraq loomed around the corner. I had my reporter’s notebooks and a gas mask ready to go. A friend suggested that we time the sprint between my apartment and the nearest public bomb shelter, should Iraqi SCUDS start falling. Fortunately, they never came. However, in the midst of all the tension, there was a remarkable normalcy and vibrancy to daily life despite the fact that the economy had been decimated by the protracted and deadly conflict, and the gains made during the boom years had all but vanished. Israelis had already shifted gears to the new reality of life at war—again. I was struck time and again at how new ideas were taking shape—ideas that might become products and companies. It was astonishing how this nation refused to get mired in the difficulties of the time. Rather, it sloughed them off like old skin to start anew. The cafés and restaurants were full, and movie theaters and opera houses were packed. There was a fighting spirit that was palpable. Nobody surrendered to the distinct pressures and deficits that piled up each day. It became very clear to me that this was a place where the kinds of challenges and difficulties that would cause most to throw up their hands were perceived quite differently. They were viewed as challenges to be met head on, as opportunities to be uncovered through adversity. This is where innovation begins.

Badly written, nice tidbits
By P. Willson
If ever a book screamed for an editor with a big red pen, this is it. Look up prolix, this is what you'll find pictured. It may also be the most redundantly written book I have ever read -- there are essentially three or four points, and they are repeated with small variation several times a paragraph, a page, a chapter -- AAAARGGHHH! Never elaborated, never intensively critiqued, never actually contrasted to how it's done elsewhere -- just restated with a big handful of superlative modifiers.

BUT - I'm about to finish the darn book, and have persisted because there are a number of great, if undeveloped, anecdotes and people, some of them brand new to me, although many are drawn from other books. These tidbits are to the text like raisins are to bran cereal: the only things that make it digestible.

Name, Rank and 8200
By Amazon Customer
They say that all is fair in love and war, so you can't expect a country that's been surrounded by enemies for over 65 years to always play nice. Here's a fascinating book that will tell you how a tiny country kept itself from being destroyed by using mostly its wits. Whatever you may think about Israel, you've got to admit that from its inception, the odds were against it. And you've also got to give it credit for surviving while being outnumbered by over 100 to 1 from the onset. Under those conditions, the only way to keep afloat is to outsmart your enemy, and that's what this book is about. The major focus here is on the technological side - that being things like computers, electronics and advanced weaponry - and how one division in particular had a large hand in it all. That unit is called 8200 which is part of the Intelligence Division of the IDF.

But this book isn't only about one army unit and its effect on the IDF. This book also delves past that and into the influence that the graduates from 8200 have had in helping Israel to become one of the biggest innovators in the Hi-Tech business world today. And we're talking about really big strides in technology that are affecting the whole globe. For instance - ever send or receive an SMS message on your cell phone? Ever take part in a video conference? Perhaps you sent a song or perhaps a picture to someone's cell? What about that great, yet simple invention - voice mail? Well, there you go - those are some of the things that ex-8200 soldiers invented. And the list goes on.

One of the more interesting facets that this book investigates is why such a large concentration of young men and women achieved so much in their short lives. One of the answers that the author gives is similar to the old adage "necessity is the mother of invention". When your existence is at stake and any errors in judgment could cost the lives of both your fellow soldiers and innocent civilians - if not your whole country - then there's just no room for conventional thinking. In fact, you've got to find solutions to problems that haven't even cropped up yet! The IDF set out to find, sow and nurture and grow the minds that could do this, and of course the harvest from this is going to be exceptional. This developmental process is what this book is all about.

It should be noted that author Stacy Perman wrote this in a very pro-Israel prospective. This may disturb some readers, and I thought you should be warned. Mind you, she does seem to have a slightly left-wing bent here, as - for instance - she describes the then PM Ariel Sharon with words like 'hawkish', and seems far more enamored of the outspokenly 'dovish' Shimon Peres. You should also know that you're not going to learn any previously unrevealed secrets from this book. Everything in this book has been cleared by the IDF, and very few military things you'll read will be news to you. However, what will be enlightening is the methods used, and the innovations that came from those same young people who developed these methods.

You'll also find that Perman's style here has a very fictional flavor to it. In fact, some of the accounts of historic triumphs in Israeli espionage sound like excerpts from a joint effort between John Le Carre and Robert Ludlum. So you're not going to feel like you're being bombarded by boring statistics and list of bland information. Take this quote as an example, so you can see what I mean:

"In the inky darkness of the pre-dawn hours, the Red Sea had turned choppy. The sun had yet to bathe the sea, known in Arabic as 'Al Bahr Al Ahmar', in its winter light. Fishing boats moored in the waters surrounded by Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and the Sudan rocked in the stormy darkness. An old, blue cargo ship, sailing under the flag of the kingdom of Tonga, cruised northward, making its way toward the Suez Canal, while on board most of its 13-man crew slept."

By the way, this is one of the first times that I've found the preface and acknowledgments to be equally as fascinating as the body of the book. What's more, the endnotes are just as interesting.

I must add at this point that I felt a touch cheated when I finished reading this book. I was hoping to learn much more about the start-up companies and amazing products that these 8200 graduates have gone on to develop. Instead, I feel she gave us a touch too much about the military side of the story, and not quite enough about the entrepreneurial side of the take. She did, however, handle the business side as even-handedly as possible, by also including how the bust in the Hi-Tech industry affected these fledgling companies. Well, hey, nobody's perfect, right? We're talking about inventors and innovators here, and we all know that this type of creative genius doesn't always make for financial wizards as well - if ever.

In sum - I found this book to be very well written, very carefully researched and totally fascinating on a subject that I most likely would have never read about, had my son not heard of the book and insisted I buy it. Mind you, it is slightly biased on the pro-Israel side with a touch of a left-wing slant. But for a non-fiction book on business, this reads more like the history of Ian Fleming's development of gadgets invented by Q, with some scintillating episodes that any 'double-oh' agent would have been proud to have been a part of. And at only 256 pages, it's not going to take a long time to read, either. This is one book on spying that doesn't, and shouldn't be kept a secret - four out of five stars and highly recommended!

Friends Or Rivals
By John G. Hilliard
I mistakenly thought that this was a book on business, after all it was in the business section at the book store. So I was surprised that what we really get from this author is a real life espionage tail. This book starts off fast and just does not slow down. Equal parts of the credit for the exciting pace of the book must go to the author as well as the audacious story. The book details how the nation of Israel views part of its survival the health of it's economy. Not a terribly original thought, but what they do to make sure it has every edge possible is what makes them and this book stand out.

The book details a number of James Bond like tails of daring deeds that make the reader want to shout "right on" and secretly wish that our government take a few lessons. So this is how a competent spy agency goes about stealing industrial secrets. The book does briefly touch on some of the business aspects, but at its heart this is n espionage book and a darn good one at that. Overall I really enjoyed the book. It was top notch reporting as well as a good job with the writing. If you are interested in Israel, espionage or just how they seem to have so many technological superior products, then pick this book up now.

Students come to a general chemistry course with a variety of backgrounds and interests. Most plan to become scientists, engineers, or professionals in medicine or other areas of the life sciences. Part of the task of the chemistry instructor is convincing students that knowledge of chemistry is essential to a true understanding of fields that range from cell biology to medicine to materials science. Indeed, the chemical properties and principles students learn in this course will pervade almost every aspect of their personal and professional lives. In this text, we have tried to provide students with core principles and interesting applications of chemistry. We believe that such knowledge will both help them in their professions and enrich their everyday lives. In addition to establishing the relevance of chemistry to broader concerns, a textbook can enhance students' success in the study of chemistry by satisfying other needs: the need for background material and a second voice for students to hear; help in visualizing chemical phenomena, both what students can see with their eyes and what they must learn to see with their minds' eyes; and help in formulating strategies for solving problems, the basis on which their knowledge will so often be tested. In crafting the third edition of this text, we have strived to strike a necessary balance in meeting these basic needs.

A Balanced Coverage of the Major Areas of General Chemistry

A major goal of ours in writing this text has been to provide a truly general course that integrates all the major areas of chemistry. Physical principles, inorganic compounds, and analytical techniques are addressed repeatedly. As in the previous editions, organic chemistry is appropriately incorporated throughout the text. Thus, some simple organic chemistry is introduced in Chapter 2 and used thereafter to describe physical properties of substances, aspects of chemical bonding, acid-base chemistry, and oxidation-reduction reactions. Biochemistry is introduced in Chapter 6 in a discussion of carbohydrates and fats as fuels for our bodies; it is used frequently in following chapters where appropriate. We have enhanced our treatment of analytical chemistry in this third edition, with details on types of titrations, descriptions of analytical tools, and new problems that are analytical specific, such as the Kjeldahl method for nitrogen, weight titrations, and limestone analysis.

As in the second edition, Chapter 23, titled "Chemistry and Life: More About Organic, Biological, and Medicinal Chemistry," brings together the core organic chemistry concepts introduced in earlier chapters, expands on them in those cases where the earlier introduction was necessarily brief, and then discusses the chemistry of selected biomolecules and medicinal compounds. In this way, we have tried to provide a useful set of core material to those who will never take 4xl organic chemistry course, while also offering a broader-than-usual preparation for students who will enroll in organic chemistry courses.

A Balanced Organization

The first 18 chapters of the text emphasize chemical principles, but the principles are illustrated throughout with significant applications and concrete examples from descriptive chemistry. Chapter 20 (The s-Block Elements), Chapter 21 (The p-Block Elements), and Chapter 22 (The d-Block Elements and Coordination Chemistry) provide a systematic treatment of descriptive chemistry, but with an emphasis on how the properties of substances relate to the principles learned earlier in the text. Chapter 19 (Nuclear Chemistry), Chapter 23 (Chemistry and Life), Chapter 24 (Chemistry of Materials), and Chapter 25 (Environmental Chemistry) are fairly independent, free standing chapters. These chapters can serve as capstones to a general chemistry course, for each revisits the basic principles of earlier chapters to cover topics in which students generally have a strong interest. These chapters can be studied, in whole or in part, in just about any order.

A Balanced Approach to Problem Solving

Problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically are essential for success in today's world. We provide ample opportunities for practicing these skills. For every type of problem we provide Examples that are carefully worked out, step-by-step, to guide students in solving similar problems.

Two problem-solving tools accompany the Examples. Problem-Solving Notes provide ready reference and help for students as they study specific Examples: The notes highlight relevant problem-solving techniques, help students understand and test the assumptions used to solve a worked Example, provide helpful hints, and encourage students to check their answers. Also, in the early chapters, particularly Chapter 3 (Stoichiometry), the various terms in a series of related calculations may be annotated. These annotations present a brief rationale for each calculation; we hope they will help students focus on "why" as well as "how:"

The Examples are followed by Exercises that students can use to practice their understanding of the methods illustrated. In most cases, two Exercises are given, labeled A and B. The goal in an A Exercise is to apply to a similar situation the method outlined in the Example. In a B Exercise, students often must combine that method with other ideas previously learned. Many of the B Exercises provide a context closer to that in which chemical knowledge is applied, and they thus serve as a bridge between the worked Examples and the more challenging problems at the end of the chapter.

The ability to plug numbers into an equation and get an answer, in itself, is seldom enough to attain mastery of a concept. For example, students should generally be able to judge whether an answer is reasonable, and in some cases, to obtain a reasonable estimate of an answer without doing a detailed calculation. To assist in the acquisition of these skills, we offer worked-out Estimation Examples followed by Estimation Exercises. Examples and Exercises of this type are found throughout the text.

Students also need to develop insights into chemical concepts that are often best demonstrated by an ability to solve problems of a qualitative nature. To emphasize this aspect of problem solving, we provide guided Conceptual Examples followed by Conceptual Exercises.

Through the different types of Examples and Exercises described, students of this text should gain a balanced set of skills in chemical problem solving. As additional reinforcement, the text offers four kinds of end-of-chapter exercises:

  • Review Questions are intended to provide a qualitative measure of student understanding of the main ideas introduced in the chapter. Answers to a few of the Review Questions are given in Appendix F (Answers to Selected Problems).
  • Problems are arranged by topic; they test mastery of the problem-solving techniques discussed in the chapter. The Problems are arranged in matched pairs, with answers to odd-numbered problems given in Appendix F.
  • Additional Problems are not grouped by type. Some are more challenging than the Problems, often requiring a synthesis of ideas from more than one chapter. Others pursue an idea further than is done in the text, or introduce new ideas. Answers to all of the odd-numbered Additional Problems are given in Appendix F.
  • A new category of exercises, Apply Your Knowledge, offers a small selection of applied, multiconceptual, and/or challenging problems designed for interested and well-prepared students. Answers to odd-numbered Apply Your Knowledge problems are given in Appendix F.
  • e-Media Problems specifically address interactive elements in the Companion Website, the electronic companion to this book. Typically, these problems can't be worked without reference to the Companion Website.

Some of the end-of-chapter Problems and Additional Problems are of an estimation or conceptual type, mirroring similar types of exercises within each chapter. We do not specifically label these questions as we do in the body of the chapter, however, because we want to give students experience in recognizing different types of problems as well as solving them.

A Balance of Print, Visual, and Media Presentation

Difficulty seeing the unseeable and imagining things in tree dimensions is cited among the top three barriers confronting students in a general chemistry course. (The other two are poor study habits and poor math skills, both of which are addressed by specific print and media supplements to this text; see following.) In this book, we use drawings, computer graphics, and photographs to help students visualize chemical phenomena at both the microscopic (molecular) and macroscopic (visible) levels. Users of this text also have available the media resources, which include hundreds of animations, simulations, exercises and molecular models that students can interactively explore on their computers.

This New Edition: Achieving Further Balance

We have revised the previous edition in specific ways in response to reviewer suggestions. We have:

  • rewritten explanations of a few difficult topics to be carefully paced and appropriate to the background of the typical student.
  • revised Chapter 17 to more clearly emphasize the molecular view of thermodynamics. Related concepts such as Raoult's law and colligative properties are rationalized using this molecular-thermodynamic approach.
  • enhanced the treatment of analytical chemistry.
  • updated the material throughout to reflect the latest science while retaining the relaxed, easy-to-read style of the second edition, including learning aids such as voice balloons in problem-solving strategies. We have continued the use of conceptual exercises that require the student to reflect on what has been learned. We have also r...

The textbook arrived on time and in outstanding condition. Now my daughter will not have to lug as many heavy books back and forth to school.

Could be much better
By A Customer
It is because of textbooks such as this one that students lose interest in chemistry, and, worse, science in general. Yes, it is filled with LOTS of information, but there are many instances in which otherwise relatively simple concepts are twisted into something incomprehensible. In some cases, it seemed that the authors went out of their way to explain a topic in the most convoluted manner possible. Come on guys, chemistry is complex enough as it is, so rather than write a tome displaying how much YOU know about the topic, how about a more "student friendly" textbook that doesn't so readily confirm most people's suspicians that chemistry is as dry as saw dust.

Trades readability for depth and rigor
By Bruce Nourish
This text is best suited for very good students who are motivated, comfortable reading English at a high level and mathematically adept: other students would be served much better by a different book. It contains far more material than could possibly be covered in a standard freshman general chemistry sequence, even with a good class. The authors assume that their audience is composed of the students I described initially (I am told it is the textbook at MIT), and leave it to the instructor to "break it down" for the students. Initially, I was not fond of this book, but I have slowly changed my mind, and I believe I have a better grasp of introductory chemistry thanks to the extra depth it goes to and the challenges it made me rise to.

Essentials of Educational Psychology: Big Ideas to Guide Effective Teaching (3rd Edition), by Jeanne Ellis Ormrod

Unlike most educational psychology books, which take one theory at a time, explain its assumptions and principles and then identify implications for educational practice, Essentials of Educational Psychology focuses more on the commonalities than the differences among theories, because although researchers from different traditions have approached human cognition and behavior from many different angles, they sometimes arrive at more or less the same conclusions. This book integrates ideas from many theoretical perspectives into a set of principles and concrete strategies that psychology as a whole can offer you.

See for Yourself exercises will help you discover more about yourself as a thinker and learner and also help you come to a deeper and more personal understanding of educational psychology’s core ideas.

Review

“I have had many students each term tell me that this is the most readable and practical textbook they have ever read. . . .[Essentials] is something that [Ormrod] wrote after considering her students’ needs!  This comes out in the writing style but in a way that also maintains the rigor of the content and uses the most recent understandings in the field.”

Mark J. Szymanski

Pacific University

“This text creates an integrated and engaging narrative that adeptly weaves theories and concepts of learning, motivation, and development into classroom teaching. . . .Not only is the text a pleasure to read, but it is also a pleasure to teach using this text. . . .This format is sensitive to the length of semesters, and frees instructors from rushing from one chapter to the next or covering multiple chapters in a single week.  As such, instructors have greater flexibility to explore the topics with students.”

Cecil Robinson

The University of Alabama

“Other texts present information that is often bogged down with dry descriptions of research and abstract concepts.  Ormrod has an outstanding ability to make content accessible to and interesting for undergraduate students. . . .Also, examples and suggestions are clearly related to chapter content and helpful for tying content to actual classroom practice.  We recommend that students keep this textbook because it will be a useful reference for them when they actually begin teaching.”

From the Back Cover

The first book of its kind, Essentials of Educational Psychology focuses squarely on the core concepts, principles, and underlying assumptions of the field of educational psychology–the big ideas of ed psych.  Because of this focus and the book’s exceptionally direct and clear presentation, Essentials is a 10-chapter book that can truly be covered and understood in a term.  It is a book that enables and empowers students to understand the value and essential importance of educational psychology to becoming a qualified and effective teacher.

What's new in the Third Edition?

  • Each chapter now begins with three to six Mega-Ideas—overarching, unifying principles that subsume the chapter’s Big Ideas and can serve as advance organizers for readers.
  • Numerous margin questions encourage readers to reflect on what they’re reading. Their purpose is often to encourage readers to connect what they’re reading to their past experiences or current beliefs about a topic
  •  The Developmental Trends tables in Chapters 2 through 10 now have a new “Example” column that illustrates one or more of the age-typical characteristics for each of four grade levels: K–2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12.
  • New video examples have been added to the Book-Specific Resources in MyEducationLab, with references to them in the margins at appropriate places throughout the book.
  • Added or enhanced coverage of many topics including: action research, culturally responsive teaching, bullying, the use of technology in planning and instruction, and English Language Learners.

The loose-leaf pages are very thin. VERY thin. If you try to highlight important concepts the ink easily bleeds through and makes the text very difficult to read. They also tear easily so don't turn the pages too quickly in your binder.

As for the content, it's littered with jargon and not very practical. This is a required text for a course I'm currently taking and my professor even states that many times it goes "too in depth". If you want to get down to the nitty gritty and learn every desirable detail about psychology in education, go for it, but don't expect this book to clearly outline techniques you can put to use in your classroom.

This book is put together very well and is full of great information. It is very informative, it flows smoothly, and the concepts are easy to understand. It is one of the best books I have had in college. Thanks to the author for their outstanding work.

Dont buy this
By Andrea
This e-book is awful. bought this thinking it was the real text book, but i thought it couldnt be that bad! I was completely wrong. The format is terrible, its almost impossible to navigate though. You cant use your mouse to scroll up once you scrolled down. it looks like it was made in the 1990's with this terrible format. the index and chapters are super annoying, and save yourself the time, money and stress and find the actual textbook. if this wasnt for a college class, i would have never gotten it.

Thought provoking economics
By Vincent Le Suer
Holcombe's book is readable and good for developing clarity about how public administrators and the government generally perceives the market economy and its usefulness to society. Public Sector Economics is a good text for understanding how the market economy works in the United States, along with the corresponding needs and pitfalls. Holcombe's definitions are nicely illustrated with relevant and sometimes complex examples. It is not necessary to be versed in this genre-or even in agreement with its perspectives- to find this text helpful and enlightening. On the other hand, know that it is a graduate level study and may not be the best guide for someone with less than college level reading or minimal critical thinking skills.
