About the Author

Suzanne Adams, Ph.D., is an Assistant Research Professor at the University of Colorado at Denver, where she is also the Early Childhood Program Coordinator. In addition, Dr. Adams is the Director of the ECE-CARES Project, a unique training and mentoring program for early childhood teachers and related service professionals. The focus of this program is to help early childhood personnel respond constructively to the complex influences on young children's lives, promote children's emotional well-being, reduce disruptive classroom behavior, and enhance children's social competence.

Dr. Adams has coordinated several teacher training grants funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Colorado Department of Education, the State of Colorado Youth Crime Prevention and Intervention Initiatives, and Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities. She has served in a variety of service capacities through professional organizations and currently sits on the governor-appointed Colorado Interagency Coordinating Council.

Dr. Adams has presented many workshops on a variety of topics, including promoting social competence in young children, developmentally appropriate practice, intervention strategies, behavioral challenges, family-centered approach, and teacher mentoring. She has published in the areas of conflict mediation with young children, social competence, early literacy development, and is the co-producer of the video, "The CARES Model: Building Social Skills and Reducing Problem Behaviors in Early Childhood Classrooms."

Joan Baronberg, M.A., has worked in the field of early childhood education for over 25 years. She assisted in the development and evaluation of urban education demonstration projects for the U.S. Office of Education and in the early development of Project Head Start for the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington, D.C. Before joining the ECE-CARES Project, Ms. Baronberg worked in the field of child abuse prevention and developed programs and curricula for use by children and families. Ms. Baronberg has taught children and teachers, led workshops throughout the state of Colorado, and mentored early childhood providers. She is the co-producer of the video, "The CARES Model: Building Social Skills and Reducing Problem Behaviors in Early Childhood Classrooms."

Ms. Baronberg received her Master's Degree from Bank St. College of Education in New York City. Her Master's thesis, "Black Representation in Children's Books," was published by the ERIC Information Retrieval Center. She later authored "The Eight Week Nurturing Program for Children" published by Family Focus, Inc., a child abuse prevention agency in Colorado.

Ms. Baronberg sat on the development board for the newest Denver Public Schools elementary school, is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and is the founder and coordinator of a 250 member Internet genealogy group.

Promoting Positive Behavior: Guidance Strategies for Early Childhood Settings is designed as a text for college courses at the two- and four-year levels to prepare teachers and other professionals to work with young children and their families in early care and education settings of all kinds. This book can also serve as a resource for practicing early childhood teachers, caregivers, and administrators. The primary goal of this text is to articulate a variety of guidance strategies designed to promote the emotional well-being of young children, reduce problem behaviors, and enhance children's social competence.

The concepts and guidance strategies presented in Promoting Positive Behavior are based on current research, evidence-based practice, and the authors' experience with the ECECARES Project, a teacher-training program for early childhood educators housed at the University of Colorado at Denver. Five constructs synthesized from research on young children's social/emotional development form the core of CARES Strategies:

Caring and cooperative early childhood settings
Assertiveness (self-esteem and mastery)
Relationship skills
Emotional regulation and reactivity
Self-control

Since its inception in 1994, the ECE-CARES Project has trained over 2,000 early childhood educators and implemented CARES Strategies in early care and education settings serving over 20,000 children and their families. In a series of research studies, children in settings practicing CARES Strategies demonstrated significantly higher rates of prosocial skills than children in control classrooms, showing more positive peer interactions, improvements in emotional regulation, and use of peaceful conflict resolution.

Promoting Positive Behavior presents real-life examples specific to the needs of adults working with toddlers, preschoolers, and primary-grade children. The vignettes, insights, and strategies described in this book represent a collection of knowledge and experiences gathered from hundreds of care and education professionals with whom we have worked. The guidance strategies presented are designed to be woven into the fabric of typical routines and learning activities of any care and education setting.

Text chapters include research and practical skills designed to give care and education providers a factual knowledge base and an integrated set of guidance strategies for use in professional practice. In general, chapters follow this sequence:

Opening vignette presents a real-life scenario focusing on the content in the chapter
Presentation of concepts, research, and strategies to enable early care and education providers to guide young children and promote positive behavior
Ideas for involving families either interspersed throughout or in a separate section at the end of the chapter
Key terms and concepts to define important terminology used in the chapter
Learning in action provides small-group activities and field assignments that allow students in college courses to observe, practice, and apply concepts and strategies; designed to be carried out independently or under the direction of the instructor

I bought this book for one of my college classes last year. I'm majoring in early childhood education and this book has lots of tips and is easily read. I liked this book so much that I still look over it sometimes, now that I am working with children.

About the Author

CHARLES F. GOLDFARB is the father of XML Technology. He invented SGML, the Standard Generalized Markup Language on which both XML and HTML are based. His XML Handbook is now in its fifth edition, with more than 100,000 copies in print.

Chapter 2 of this book is an introduction to XML that should be sufficient for learning the XML features of Office 2003. As our readers will have differing experience with XML and different requirements for its use, there seemed no sensible way to intersperse detailed XML education with the Office XML tasks that are the focus of the book.

Instead we’ve put the detailed tutorials and references on the XML language and related standards where you can easily find them when you need them. They are in Part Three. The book’s Table of Contents and Index can guide you to specific subjects, and we also provide appropriate cross-references to them from the Office XML task chapters in Part Two.

While we chose and edited the XML tutorials to emphasize the aspects that are supported in Office, we did so fully aware that the focus of the book is on sharing information, including between Office and other systems that could have more complete XML support. For that reason, we also cover, though in less detail, XML facilities that Office does not support fully.

The Office suite is packaged and distributed in multiple editions and the XML support varies among them:

Native XML file formats for Word and Excel are available in all editions.
Custom schema support is only available in the Professional and Professional Enterprise editions.

Almost all of the Office material in this book involves custom schemas. The general XML material, of course, is not product-specific.

When the book talks about “the Office products” without further qualification, it means those with XML support: Word, Excel, InfoPath, Access, and FrontPage.

Although Visio also has XML support, it is sufficiently different from the other products that we don’t cover it in the book. Its XML capabilities can be summarized as follows:

It has its own XML data representation, called VDX.
It can import SVG drawings as shapes and export complete diagrams in SVG.
It is possible to attach XML data in any schema to objects in a Visio diagram.

These things are mentioned here to avoid cluttering the book with disclaimers like “if you have the Professional edition you can also do this” and “all of the products (except Visio and non-XML-enabled products) can do that”.

How to use this book

XML in Office 2003 has three parts, consisting of 24 chapters. We won’t try to describe the full scope here, as you can easily look at the Table of Contents. But we do include some tips that will help you get the most from the book.

Part One introduces the applications of desktop XML, the XML language and technology, and the XML features of Office. Please read it first as it is the foundation for the rest of the book.

Part Two teaches the XML features of Office in detail, with working examples and step-by-step walk-throughs. Each chapter has a subtitle that indicates the level of implementation task it describes: power user or script developer. The Office product name is also included if it isn’t in the chapter title.

You can read Part Two with only Part One as background, although technical readers may want to complete the XML tutorials first; others can dip into them as needed.

There are two considerations to keep in mind regarding the examples:

Web services change. Any Web service described in this book might not be exactly the same, or even still exist, at the time you read about it. Before testing the example code, please check the Web service at the provided URL to see if anything has changed.
URLs do not contain line breaks. URLs can be very long and they cannot contain line breaks. When you see a URL in this book that is split over several lines, the line breaks are not part of the actual URL; they were inserted so that the URL could fit within the page width of the book.

The XML tutorials can be found in Part Three. We strove to keep them friendly and understandable for readers without a background in subjects not covered in this book. Tutorials whose subject matter thwarted that goal are labeled as being a tad tougher so you will know what to expect, but not to discourage you from reading them.

There is an extensive index that also serves as a “glossary-in-context”. We believe that the meaning of a term is best understood in context — in several contexts if they add to understanding, or the term has multiple meanings. Therefore, an index entry identifies the page(s) where its term is defined separately from the entry’s other pages.

Using XML in Office 2003 - for technical writers

In my efforts to learn and understand XML the past year and a half I have come upon a decided lack of interest for the subject among my technical writing colleagues. Single-sourcing with XML has simply been too difficult to set up. You need a DTD or schema (or EDD in FrameMaker) before your can start writing, and style sheets to present it. It seems that XML has mostly been used in web services like on-line shopping.
If tech writers are using XML, it is probably because they were already using FrameMaker with SGML earlier and have just converted their documents to the XML version. Furthermore, if you are not using FrameMaker 7.0 as an authoring tool, you had to find some other new tool, like XMLSpy, Authentic or Veredus, which have many capabilities, but seem "geeky" to a tech writer.
INTRODUCING XML IN OFFICE 2003
You can't imagine how delighted I was to see this book recommended in a newsletter, because that was the first I'd heard about the XML facilities in Office 2003. When my husband updated to Office 2003, I bought the book to see how it works. To my dismay, I discovered that the XML facilities are only in the Professional edition, so I ordered a 30-day trial version of Office 2003 from Microsoft and started reading.
One of the authors, Charles Goldfarb, has been in on XML since its conception (and birth, way back in 1998!) so he is one of the big XML gurus. Now gurus are not necessarily, by definition, good writers of introductory books. However, Goldfarb has his own series of excellent books, motivating and educating developers and users in the wonders of XML.
This introduction is well structured and well thought out. All the steps are well described and easy to follow. There are even separate XML tutorials to bring beginners up to speed without boring more advanced users. The only difficulty I found is that the book is so richly illustrated that some steps refer to a screen capture on a following page.
USING THE BOOK
Part 1, Introducing Desktop XML, aims to motivate you with "The reason why" it's worth your while to get the 30-day trial version and keep on reading.
Part 2, Working with XML in Office, has you creating XML documents in Word, using external XML data in spreadsheets, exporting and importing XML in Access and creating XML websites in FrontPage. You will also discover how easy it is to import XML data, like zip codes and stock market data, from the Internet. You can download all the code for the examples from [...]
INFOPATH
An exciting new feature is a new Microsoft product, InfoPath, which you can use to create "smart" forms. The book includes a CD with a free 60-day trial version. InfoPath can become your front end to XML-enabled databases, or any other data-based XML application. (Note: you have to open the sample InfoPath documents in Design mode, and then publish them to your own computer to be able to see them in action.)
XML TUTORIALS
If you have never seen XML before, there is no need to shy away. Goldfarb provides you with all you need to know in Part 3, XML Tutorials, in the back of the book. Each chapter in Part 2 lists the skills you need to understand and perform its activities, with a reference to which tutorial to read prior to the chapter. So, while more experienced readers can start right off, beginners do a tutorial or two in the back of the book before starting each new chapter.
USING XML IN OFFICE 2003
I found working with XML in Office 2003 easy and intuitive. All the information you need is in the Task Pane on the right side of the screen. Just drag tags from the pane to your document. If you want to produce XML quickly, you can even use the built-in Word Markup Language (which catches every bit of Word's complicated style markup). Nevertheless, it is much better to learn what little you need to know to author pure XML in Word, which it does beautifully. XML is an open format that you can import into any other XML document in, say, FrameMaker, InDesign or Quark, so it is worth keeping it pure.
BEYOND THE TUTORIALS
Of course the hard part is making the first decision to actually create a working document in XML. Other than in tutorials and class exercises, I have not gotten there yet. I figure it won't be long before I update my 30-day trial to the real version of Office 2003. It really isn't difficult to get started, because Office 2003 provides you with a number of templates with all the necessary schemas and style sheets, which you can modify for your own use. Now you have to figure out how to convince your employer that this is exactly what you need to make your documentation work more efficient and user friendly.

Great guide anyone with a little O2K3 experience can pick up

With the XML advantages in the Office 2003 suite of applications not being glaringly obvious (at least not to me), I gave this book a whirl. I'm glad I did.

It's consistent in its organization - presenting the capabilities of Word, Excel, Access, FrontPage, and Office forms to use, manage and manipulate XML-based data - first from within the applications themselves, and then from more robust subsystems using Office's embedded Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). It shows how easy it is to manage data by building great apps with simple scripts. (Notably missing was a discussion on the applications of XML within PowerPoint, although I'm admittedly unsure if that's even an issue.)

The book's voice is very friendly and non-intimidating, using chapter around 15-30 pages at most, making for a pleasant, quick reading experience. On this note, I found the Excel chapters and those on WordML especially valuable. As far as the examples themselves, all were practical and easy to replicate locally, whether by menu or through code. There's a healthy lean towards the use of SOAP by making Web services calls for importation of data that's a great addition.

The book also has something I found that many modern programming texts don't - an easy-to-understand explanation of schemas and how to construct them. All books discussing XML obviously make mention of the use of schema, but the vast majority don't explain it well. The authors do a great job of not only explaining schema's role in an app, but also how to build it, which is something newbies will appreciate.

Still, in this day of modern distributed applications and datashaping, I also would have liked to see the VBA-based examples complemented/contrasted with .NET programming concepts and code, working against the APIs for each Office app. Also, one thing I found somewhat annoying was that the code, while complete and hearty, always referenced "in Line 25...and then in Line 30", without marking the lines of code, forcing the reader to manually count-and-mark the lines. This was a minor nuisance, but a nuisance nonetheless.

But the good in this book far outweighs the bad, and the content and examples can be picked up by any level of staffer in the workplace who's familiar with Office apps. It's a great read.

Good, but could use more even level of detail

Mr. Goldfarb is on a tear with yet another book about XML and XML technologies. In this case it's about the integration of XML into Microsoft's Office Suite for 2003. This is an impressive peice of work and it shows through in the book, which is far superior to his XML handbook, though it does suffer from similar problems. Once again the book has aggressively short chapters and has an uneven level of detail. In addition some of the chapters feel like a lift from the handbook, which is not necessarily a bad thing give that they are from the same author. And the book also has a strange organization, for instance leaving the explanation of XML standards and syntax to the last few chapters of the book.
That being said the book is still far better than the XML Handbook. And I think in large part that has to do with the fascinating topic which is Microsoft's excellent work in integrating XML into their products. This is a worthy read, especially if you are a developer looking to leverage the XML capabilities of the Office suite.

Rude and Uncalled for

I recieved the book on a timely manner. However, I went to return the book because I dropped the class the day after I recieved the book, contacted the seller, and recieved a rude email about "I do not think you can return a textbook because you no longer want it. When I buy texts for my kids, we sell them on amazon when we are through with them. Please do this." It hasn't even been two weeks since I recieved the book. Poor character.

Foreword

It is so good to finally have a book targeted at the software industry that challenges some of the basic business assumptions behind software engineering, and particularly those behind managing software organizations. At the time these words are written, the software business is facing huge difficulties worldwide. I hope that these difficulties also generate a willingness to look afresh at the business and to have the courage to contemplate changes. Other industries, particularly in manufacturing, went through such conceptual changes in their business processes during the 1980s and the 1990s. It is certainly not easy, but as I've personally experienced, it is highly desirable.

In 1985 I managed my own software company in Israel and was quite proud with my new package for certified public accountants. But, even though my package competed very nicely in the market, I noticed an on-going business problem: More and more development was needed to keep the package alive. In such a case, how do I justify the on-going investment? Eventually, I was not sure that a small software company, focused on a specific market niche, could be a good business--even when the product itself was enthusiastically accepted by the market. I felt that even though I already had my MBA, I needed a better perspective to understand the business.

Then I met Dr. Eli Goldratt.

I had heard a lot about Dr. Goldratt's international software company, Creative Output, Inc., which was seen as much more than just an excellent and innovative software company. It challenged some of the most sacred norms of business, such as the concept of product cost. I could not understand how anyone could challenge the basic concept that a unit of a product has a certain cost associated with it. I was intrigued enough to be open to an offer: Join Creative Output in order to develop a video game for managers that would deliver some new managerial ideas. At the time, computerized games were focused on fast fingers and perfect coordination. They were certainly not something of interest to adults. How could a computer game be readily accepted by grown-up managers and deliver new managerial ideas?

This was the start of a mental voyage into a new management philosophy that does not lose its grip on reality. I turned myself into a management consultant with a focus on improving whatever is the particular goal of the organization. Software became an important supporting tool, but not the focus of the change efforts.

The relevance of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to the software industry is twofold:

Vastly improving the flow of new products to the market.

Determining the real value of a proposed project, or even just a feature, to the final user. The underlying assumption is that if we know the real value to the user, it is possible to develop the right marketing and sales approach to materialize the value to the user and to the software organization.

David Anderson focuses mainly on the first aspect in this book, which includes looking at the business case and ensuring the ability to make it happen. Software organizations can definitely be improved with the help of the new generic managerial insights that have already changed traditional western industries. David does a great job in bringing together the generic managerial ideas and rationale and combining them with software-focused approaches to come up with a coherent approach on how to improve the business.

Read this book carefully with the following objective: Learn how to make more with less. Don't accept every claim David raises just because he says it is so. If you truly want to make more with less, you need to be able to internalize the claim. All I ask is you give it a chance. Dedicate time in order to rethink your environment, and then see for yourself what to do. Overcoming inertia is the biggest challenge of any really good manager in any organization. Of course, rushing to implement new fads can be even worse. Keeping an open mind and confronting new ideas that invalidate basic assumptions are what I suggest you strive for. This book is for you to struggle with. It is not trivial, and it is not a fad. If you like what you do now, it should be your responsibility to check out new ideas that might yield huge improvements.

Here are some brief insights regarding the assessment of the value to a potential customer of a new feature, particularly to a new software package.

A new Feature can bring value to the user only if it eliminates, or vastly reduces, an existing limitation. The amount of the value depends on the limitation removed--not on the sophistication of the feature itself. Let us take a simple example. At a certain time in the history of word processors, somebody had an idea: Why not add a spell checker to the package?

What is the value of the spell check we now have as a routine feature? What limitation does it eliminate or reduce? For people with a very good knowledge of the language, spelling mistakes are caused by writing too fast. So, without a spell checker, those people need to read carefully what they just wrote. People who are not in full command of the language (for example, me, as an Israeli) need to look at the dictionary very often, which is quite time consuming.

This need leads us to recognize two additional insights.

People developed some rules to help them overcome the limitation. People who used word processors had to go over whatever they just wrote before sending the document to others. People without good command of the language needed to be supported by a dictionary.

Once the limitation is vastly reduced, people should replace the old rules with new ones that take full advantage of the removal of the limitation. If this does not happen, then there is no added value to the Feature.

Now we can see whether adding a spell checker to an existing word processor brings value. Suppose you have perfect command in the language, would you now refrain from carefully reading your recent document before sending it away? Spelling mistakes are hardly the main reason to go over any document that I want other people to read. So, for people with perfect knowledge, the spell checker offers no real value. But, for me as a person in good command of Hebrew, but not good enough in English, spelling mistakes in English are a nuisance. But, could I really avoid them just by the use of a spell checker? As long as the spell checker does not suggest how to write the word correctly--the limitation is only marginally reduced and thus not much value is produced. This means that if we want to generate significant value for the specific user group that has not mastered the language, we need to add good suggestions of what should be written instead.

In this simplified example, we already see the need to check the behavior rules both before the limitation is eliminated and after. Is it always clear what the new behavior rules should be? Assuming the user is well aware of what the new rules should be is a very common trap for too many software features.

Suppose that a new Feature is added to a sales-graph display module in which the trends shown by the graph are analyzed for statistical significance. The limitation is lack of knowledge on whether market demand is really up or down or just part of the normal statistical fluctuations. The current behavior of the management is: If sales are up, the sales agents are complimented and get appropriate bonus; if sales are down, there are no bonuses and some hard talk from management.

What should the new management rules be once management knows whether the rise in sales is significant? I'm afraid that in the vast majority of the cases the behavior will be exactly the same. Hence, the newly added Feature will not add value to the customer, even though some customers might ask for it and even exert a lot of pressure to have the Feature developed. Eventually, the value to the software company of developing the Feature will be negative.

Of course, for a good managerial consultant assisting in the formation of better decision processes, a specific Feature can bring immense value both to the consultant and the client. In this case, a strategic partnership between the consultant and the software company can be a win-win for all, including the client.

Improving the flow of the Features that truly bring value to the customer and also have a good chance of generating revenues for the software organization is what this unique book is all about. The Agile Manifesto principle of "Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software" is fully in line with the Theory of Constraint's objectives. To be more precise, TOC strives to generate more of the organization's goal. But, in order to do so, the organization has to generate more value to its customers. The means of early and continuous delivery of software that truly generates value should assist both the software organization and its clients in achieving more of their respective goals.

Please bear in mind that improvement has only one criterion: Achieving more of the goal. The path to truly improving the performance of your software organization may well start with this book.

A Management Book that Developers Should Read Too

This book is essential reading for IT managers, but senior developers should read it too. While some things in this book will make engineers say "I know that, but just didn't know how to say it", other things are real eye openers. Engineers will find some of the management theory to be dry reading, but it is relevant.
If you ask engineers who have used both traditional (i.e. waterfall) methods and agile methods they will tell you that agile methods are superior, but if you ask them why and how agile methods deliver better results almost none of them will be able to tell you. They know it from experience and intuition, but they do not understand the why and how.
Of course, since engineers don't know how and why agile methods work they are at a disadvantage when it comes to convincing management to try them. That's where David Anderson's book comes in. It explains how and why agile methods work in terms that engineers can identify with and that managers understand: increased profit, meaningful accounting, and the ability to repeat successes.
Being able to convince your manager to try agile methods is only one benefit. As a team lead or architect if you don't understand what makes agile methods work you may very well end up doing things that defeat their advantages.
This book explains why certain things help software development and why others impede it. Why and how should software development teams should identify and exploit constraints? What is Throughput Accounting and why should it be used for software development instead of Cost Acounting? How is software development different from other kinds of engineering and manufacturing businesses? How can the self organizing behavior intrinsic to successful software development efforts be improved?
Anderson's book is invaluable to the manager and valuable to the software engineer.

Abraham Lincoln once asked something like, "If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?" The answer is four. "Just because you call a tail a leg doesn't make it so." Just because you want to call some development practice "Agile" doesn't make it so. In this book, David Anderson makes a case for calling Theory of Constraints the underlying definition of Agile software development practices. The principle tie is that a key measure in the Theory of Constraints is called Throughput; the amount of value delivered to the customer. Agile methods pride themselves as delivering value to the customer quickly. Based on the Theory of Constraints definition, the Feature Driven Development (FDD) method, Anderson's personal expertise, turns out to be the most Agile of all.

In making the case for the Theory of Constraints based approach, Anderson has given us a lot of formulas and metrics for looking at software projects. This is the most thorough treatment of the subject I have seen yet. I wasn't fully satisfied with the metrics as I felt the book didn't deal with the biggest problem in metrics, the problem of characterizing the measure. To do good metrics, you have to be very clear on what you are measuring, the characterization problem. Without that, all the formulas, graphs, and trends are pretty much useless. Most of the book dealt with the problem by saying, "If you could measure `X', then..." I got really tired of all the Ifs in the book.

In fact, I am not sure I should like this book or not. I found myself half of the time saying to myself, "Hmm, that is a interesting idea," and the other half saying, "I don't think so." Perhaps it was all the Ifs, perhaps it was the repetition. I am glad to say at the end of the book Anderson does appear to have the intelligence to note that one size does not fit all and does a nice job of suggesting where the best choices in software development approaches might be.

So, who should read this book? Well, if you like Donald Reinertsen's and Eliyahu Goldratt's work and live in the software world, this book is for you. If you have to teach Agile seminars to software professionals (like me), then this should be on your reading list as well. If you are general software project manager or developer who is looking to improve the way you do software development, then I would probably pass on this book. Not that the ideas are all wrong but you probably will get lost along the way. If...

This is the hardest - and possibly best - Agile software book I have read so far. It's hard because it digs deeper into the cause and effect at play within agile environments and because it deals with the "bigger" financial aspects of lean. It's a well written, comprensive text.

Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. False advertising buyer beware!

These people advertised this book as a new book w/access code, I received a book that is clearly not new (scratches on book and dirty) and to top it off the access code is expired! This book is unusable to anyone with an expired access code. How dare they take advantage of college student's by selling books that are being advertised as new when in fact there not. I have requested a full refund and have yet to hear from the vendor. This book was sent from New Delhi. Do not order from this vendor or you will be disappointed. Don't listen to the good reviews they now sound fake to me.

About the Author
Daniel A. Crowl is Herbert H. Dow Professor for Chemical Process Safety at Michigan Tech. He serves on the AIChE Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) Safety and Chemical Engineering Education (SACHE) Committee, and is author/editor of several AIChE books on process safety. His awards include AIChE’s Bill Doyle Award; the ACS Chemical Health and Safety Award; the Walton/Miller award from AIChE’s Safety and Health Division; and the AIChE Board’s Gary Leach Award. He is a Fellow of AIChE, ACS Safety and Health Division , and CCPS.

Joseph F. Louvar is Research Professor at Wayne State University’s College of Engineering, where he teaches chemical process safety, risk assessment, and process design. He was recently the CCPS staff consultant for the Undergraduate Education Committee, commonly known as the Safety and Chemical Engineering Education Committee (AIChE’s SACHE) and has previously chaired this committee for over ten years. Good Place to Start

While lacking in detail, I have found this book a good place to start when it comes to safety equipment and strategies for handling other problems with volatile organic chemicals. In this industry specialization is rare. Engineers need a place to start so that they can get the language right before proceeding to the internet and vendors. The worked-out problems are good but you will find you need to go to the source for details. As I said, a good place to start.

Valuable Process Safety Resource

Clear, straightforward textbook describing quantitiative methods to evaluate a range of process safety issues. Appropriate balance of theory and application. Real world examples with solved problems. Not a coffee table book, but a valuable reference for process engineers and enviromental, health, and safety professionals.

Brand New, Same Chapters, Problems are mixed up

The book was brand new and looked great. The chapters are all identical to the US edition, and so far all of the same problems are in the book. However, the problems are out of order from the US edition which can lead to confusing HW assignments, but it's pretty easy to figure out how they switched. Overall a great deal on this book
