It allows developers to painlessly write server-side applications without worrying about the complexities of dealing with browsers and Web servers. It also automates low-level, boring details like control flow and moving code between web forms and business logic.

About the Author

Cay S. Horstmann is a professor of computer science at San Jose State University. Previously he was vice president and chief technology officer of Preview Systems Inc. and a consultant on C++, Java, and Internet programming for major corporations, universities, and organizations.

When we heard about JavaServer™ Faces (JSF) at the 2002 Java One conference, we were very excited. Both of us had extensive experience with client-side Java programming, and had lived to tell the tale—David in Graphic Java, and Cay in Core Java, both published by Sun Microsystems Press. When we first tried web programming with servlets and JavaServer Pages (JSP), we found it to be rather unintuitive and tedious. JavaServer Faces promised to put a friendly face in front of a web application, allowing programmers to think about text fields and menus instead of fretting over page flips and request parameters. Each of us proposed a book project to the publisher, who promptly suggested that we should jointly write the Sun Microsystems Press book on this technology. It took the JSF expert group (of which David is a member) another two years to release the JSF 1.0 specification and reference implementation. This release ful-fills many of the original promises. You really can design web user interfaces by putting components on a form and linking them to Java objects, without having to write any code at all. The framework was designed for tool support, and the first batch of drag-and-drop GUI builders is now emerging. The framework is extensible—you are not limited to the standard set of HTML components, and you can even use completely different rendering technologies, to support, for example, wireless devices. And finally, unlike competing technologies that let you tumble down a deep cliff once you step beyond the glitz, JSF supports the hard stuff—separation of presentation and business logic, navigation, connections with external services, and configuration management.

Of course, being a 1.0 release, the current version of JSF is far from perfect. Some of the APIs are awkward. We supply you with utility classes in the com.corejsf.util package to reduce your pain. Also, there are fewer components than we originally expected. While JSF has a powerful and convenient data table component, some useful components such as tabbed panes, scrollers, file uploads, and so on, were not included for lack of time. In the book, we show you how to implement these features. Of course, we expect the next release of JSF to remedy many of these shortcomings.

We are still excited about JSF, and we hope you will share this excitement when you learn how this technology makes you a more effective web application developer.

About This Book

This book is suitable for web developers whose main focus is user interface design, as well as for programmers who implement reusable components for web applications. This is in stark contrast to the official JSF specification, a dense and pompously worded document whose principal audience is framework implementors, as well as long-suffering book authors.

The first half of the book, extending to the middle of Chapter 6, focuses on the JSF tags. These tags are similar to HTML form tags. They are the basic building blocks for JSF user interfaces. No programming is required for use of to use the tags. We only assume only basic HTML skills for web pages and standard Java programming for the business logic.

The first part of the book covers these topics:

Setting up your programming environment (Chapter 1)
Connecting JSF tags to application logic (Chapter 2)
Navigating between pages (Chapter 3)
Using the standard JSF tags (Chapters 4 and 5)
Converting and validating input (Chapter 6)

Starting with the final sections of Chapter 6, we begin JSF programming in earnest. You will learn how to perform advanced tasks, and how to extend the JSF framework. Here are the main topics of the second part:

Implementing custom converters and validators (Chapter 6)
Event handling (Chapter 7)
Including common content among multiple pages (Chapter 8)
Implementing custom components (Chapter 9)
Connecting to databases and other external services (Chapter 10)
Supporting wireless clients (Chapter 11)

We end the book with a chapter that aims to answer common questions of the form “How do I….?” We encourage you to have a peek at that chapter as soon as you become comfortable with the basics of JSF. There are helpful notes on debugging and logging, and we also give you implementation details and working code for features that are missing from JSF 1.0, such as file uploads, popup menus, and a pager component for long tables.

JSF is built on top of servlets and JSP, but from the point of view of the JSF developer, these technologies merely form the low-level plumbing. While it can’t hurt to be familiar with other web technologies such as servlets, JSP, or Struts, we do not assume any such knowledge.

Required Software

All software that you need for this book is freely available. You need the Java Software Development Kit from Sun Microsystems, a servlet container such as Tomcat, and, of course, a JSF implementation, such as Sun’s reference implementation. The software runs identically on Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows. We used the 1.4.2 J2SE and Tomcat 5.0.19 on both Linux and Mac OS X to develop the code examples in the book.

We also expect that integrated environments will become commercially available in the near future.

Java Monkey Wrenching

Great book on JSF, the absolute best intro to JSF in the concise, terse, classical style of Horstmann & Geary. You can buy any book by these two dudes with your eyes shut. I would have loved to see more new material in this second edition, especially on Seam and EJB integration in general. The book being so similar to the first edition there is little need for you to buy it if you already own the previous one.
The chapter on custom JSF tag development will be well over your head if you are reading the book as a first intro to JSF, and the LDAP material is pretty brutal and useless for a newbie to the subject, the chapter on opens source miscellanous frameworks is way too sparse to be useful beyond a little inspiration to learn more, but the rest of the book is top notch and will greatly help you to understand the JSF framework deep down to the bone.
The monkey wrenching title is not really about the book but about my feelings towards the development of java web development (forgive the horrible pun). First there were servlets, then JSP then EJB then Struts then JSF then Seam then Facelets then Shale...Am I the only one who feels that stacking framework over framework is going definitely overboard and leading us to do "frankenstein programming"? (omg I think I am starting to blog.. pls stop me! ;)

Certainly not as good as authors other books

I purchased this book, in part due to the reputation of

the Sun "Core" book series; and in part due to the

reputation and work of the authors previous titles.

The book is not at all intuitive, and seems to jump right

into deploying JSF. If you are a HIGHLY experienced

J2EE programer, Apache/Tomcat application administrator,

then maybe this book is for you. If not, then I would

recommend looking elsewhere.

Not only is the book lacking in context, but what is worse,

is that the JSF 1.1 specification documents (available on-line

for free from http java dot sun dot com / j2ee / javaserverfaces)

are better written, and more complete.

Again, I would recommend another title (none of which

I have read), or the JSF specification itself. If you

are like me, and hate reading 800 + pages on-line,

then I would recommend downloading and printing out the

JSF documentation.

Lubit, an academic, psychiatrist, and management consultant, explains how our ability to work effectively with difficult or "toxic" managers will have a significant impact on our careers. By improving this ability, he claims, we will learn to better understand and manage ourselves. The first order is to increase our emotional intelligence, comprising personal and social competence. About the Author

Dr. Roy H. Lubit trained in psychiatry at Yale, wrote a Ph.D. dissertation on organizational learning at Harvard, researched organizational behavior at Columbia Business School, and taught organizational behavior at the City University of New York's Zicklin School of Business. He is a senior consultant to the Center for Social and Emotional Education and a member of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations.

His professional training and extensive experience in both psychotherapy and organizational dynamics are very unusual. Many people are trained in one of these areas and do some work in the other. Deep involvement in both provides a foundation for unique insights.

Dr. Lubit coaches executives; runs leadership workshops; consults to corporations, governmental agencies, and law firms on a variety of organizational issues; and conducts research on fostering emotional intelligence. Dr. Lubit has appeared widely on TV and radio and presented numerous times at professional conferences.

Okay resource, best for someone with issues above; limited for those who are dealing with toxic above, beside and below

This book is a good general resource, but lacks some of the depth and analysis that I think I was looking for. I probably wouldn't have purchased it had thumbed through it in a store. It seems to really focus on working with toxic individuals who are above you, and a little less on those on the same level or those who you're managing. Some of the suggestions are very brief, and don't offer much substance (example, one was "defer to your boss, they key paid more than you"-- in some places that may work, but when you're dealing with toxic above and below, it doesn't!). It's a good general reference and introductory book-- the concepts aren't bad, and I did get a little bit out of it, but if you are dealing with particularly toxic environments and challenging cultures in a company, you may find value with text that provides more suggestions that you can do.

The reality of working with people

Recognising what is toxic to you is perhaps a good starting point. Many of us spend more time with the people we work with than those we've chosen to spend our lives with. Most of us make assumptions that what offends or upsets us is the same for everyone else. This is not so.

In this book, Dr Lubit provides - with humour - descriptions of different types of managers and of different management techniques that can make working life hell.

Being aware of toxic behaviour and being able to manage its impact are two quite separate things. Dr Lubit provides insights into the former and resources to help individuals and groups deal with the latter.

I've had this book on my management bookshelf since it was published and find it an excellent resource both on a personal level and as part of mentoring other staff.

Highly recommended.

About the Author
Phillip C. Wankat is Clifton L. Lovell Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and director of undergraduate degree programs at Purdue University’s School of Engineering Education. His current research interests include adsorption, large-scale chromatography, simulated moving bed systems, and distillation, as well as improvements in engineering education. He received the 2007 Distinguished Education Alumni Award of Distinction from Purdue’s College of Education, and the 2005 Shreve Prize in Chemical Engineering. With K. S. Knaebel, he contributed the Mass Transfer section to Perry’s Handbook of Chemical Engineering, Eighth Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2008).

It's alright for the Mass Transfer Class

This books pretty good as far as ChemE text books go. There was enough theory backed by actually showing you examples on how to do the math. Of course it probably won't hurt if you go look else where for clarification while taking your Mass Transfer class.

I can't give it higher than three-stars however, when taking my unit operations lab when I went back to review the material from this book I found it difficult to accurately apply the techniques to separation processes which are not set up in the same manner as the examples within the book.

This all may not matter since you'll be buying this for your mass transfer class one way or the other.

Pleasure? No. School? Definitely.

I simply ordered this book as a gift for my sister, who is in a mass transfer course for her chemical engineering program. It was a required book, and seems to do the trick, as it has been used since the first edition in that class. The book contains homework problems (which aren't used in the course, but my sister has done to solidify her understanding of the material) and, while being highly technical, explains concepts adequately. It's especially useful if required for your coursework. Amazon was definitely the cheapest place that I found it (at least compared to the school bookstore and online websites).

Do not buy this book as a kindle.

I bought this book as a kindle because I was tired of carrying around heavy books, but the formatting of the book is terrible. there are no page numbers it just goes by 'location' and it is really hard to flip back and forth between homework problems and useful equations.

About the Author
Jeanne Ellis Ormrod received her A.B. in psychology from Brown University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in educational psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. She earned licensure in school psychology through postdoctoral work at Temple University and the University of Colorado at Boulder and has worked as a middle school geography teacher and school psychologist. She was Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Northern Colorado until 1998, when she moved east to return to her native New England. She is currently affiliated with the University of New Hampshire, where she occasionally teaches courses in educational psychology and research methods. She has published numerous research articles on cognition and memory, cognitive development, and giftedness, but she is probably best known for this textbook and four others: Human Learning (currently in its fifth edition); Essentials of Educational Psychology (currently in its second edition); Child Development and Education(co-authored with Teresa McDevitt, currently in its fourth edition); and Practical Research(co-authored with Paul Leedy, currently in its ninth edition). With her three children now grown and out on their own, she lives in New Hampshire with her husband Richard.

To varying degrees, I have used every one of the Excel templates that are discussed in Professor Holden's book and I have 3 reactions. (1) ABOUT EXCEL: Writing my own Excel code to create my own spreadsheet provides a good Excel lesson, but it is a time consuming and tedious lesson. I would buy the book whether I had to write my own Excel code to create my own spreadsheet or whether finished Excel spreadsheets were provided with the book. But, I would prefer to buy the book with finished Excel spreadsheets included with the book so I could skip the Excel lessons. (2) ABOUT THE FINANCE: Overall, I would say that Prof. Holden's spreadsheets are EXCELLENT. They are financially and numerically correct. They are easy to understand. The boxes where input data must be inserted and the spreadsheet's output are well labeled to make this software easy to use. It is easy to project the spreadsheet's output onto a screen for teaching. The brightly colored graphs in the output (for example, the blue Markowitz efficient frontier) make it easy to teach from and discuss Professor Holden's software. (3) COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS: I think Professor Holden's software is too simplified to be used for large scale commercial applications. But, Professor Holden's software could easily be "souped up" to make it useful for commercial applications.

Engineering Management: Challenges in the Near Millennium prepares engineers to fulfill their managerial responsibilities, acquire useful business perspectives, and take on the much needed leadership roles to meet the new challenges in the decades ahead. These challenges will include satisfying customer demand with faster, cheaper and better products and services, managing an increasingly diversified workplace, creating and managing global supply chains, applying web-based management/engineering techniques to develop and sustain competitive advantages, and leading in creativity and innovation by transforming emerging technologies into business success.

Engineers with excellent managerial skills and superior business acumen are needed to lead corporate America in the new century. As the economy grows increasingly global, technologies advance at a faster pace, and the marketplace becomes more dynamic. Consequently, countless industrial companies will need technically trained engineers to turn technological innovations into profitability.

The need for engineering management training is obvious from another point of view. The National Science Foundation estimated in 2000 that about 46 percent of American engineers and scientists were actively working in managerial and administrative capacities. This managerial percentage remained more or less constant across the age groups from under 35 to over 55 years old. As the trend continues, almost one out of every two engineers or scientists will be engaged in managing people, projects, teams, technology, and other resources to add value to their companies.

This book prepares engineers to fulfill their managerial responsibilities, acquire useful business perspectives, and take on much-needed leadership roles to meet the challenges in the new millennium.

A number of themes permeate the book. Value addition, customer focus, and business perspectives are emphasized throughout. Also underlined are discussions of leadership attributes, steps to acquire these attributes, the areas in which engineering managers are expected to add value, the Web-based tools that can be aggressively applied to develop and sustain competitive advantages, the vital tasks of e-transformation, the opportunities offered by market expansion into global regions, and the preparations required for engineering managers to become global leaders.

The book is intended for undergraduate seniors majoring in such disciplines as aerospace, biomedical, chemical, computer, electrical, mechanical, industrial, and systems engineering and for first-year graduate engineering students. The book may also be used as a self-study guide by engineering professionals who aspire to become managers. It should be of value to first-time engineering supervisors or managers who are interested in further advancing their careers along the managerial career path.

The book is organized to contain three major parts: (I) "Functions of Engineering Management," (II) "Business Fundamentals for Engineering Managers," and (III) "Engineering Leadership in the New Millennium."

Part I introduces the basic functions of engineering management such as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These functions provide engineers and engineering managers with foundation skills to manage themselves, staff, teams, projects, technologies, and global issues of importance.

Best practices are emphasized as pertinent standards for goal setting and performance measurement. Engineering managers solve problems and minimize conflicts to achieve the company's objectives. They make rational decisions and take lawful and ethical actions. They employ Monte Carlo methods to assess projects that involve risks and uncertainties. Engineering managers engage emerging technologies, motivate a professional workforce of diverse backgrounds, advance new generations of products and services in a timely manner, and constantly surpass the best practices in the industry.

Furthermore, in this book, the roles of engineering managers in strategic planning, employee selection, team building, delegating, decision making, and the management of creativity and innovation are explained. The development of managerial competencies is emphasized.

Part II covers the fundamentals of engineering management, including cost accounting, financial accounting and analysis, managerial finance, and marketing management. This part is constructed to enable engineers and engineering managers to acquire a broadened perspective with respect to the business and stakeholders of the company and to facilitate their interaction with peer groups and units.

The book also prepares engineering managers to make decisions related to cost, finance, products, services, and capital budgets. Discounted cash flow and internal rate of return analyses are reviewed. These deliberations are of critical importance, as decisions made during the product-design phase typically determine up to 85 percent of the final costs of products. Additional deliberations are presented regarding activity-based costing (ABC) to define indirect costs related to products and services and economic value added (EVA) to determine the real profitability of an enterprise or project above and beyond the cost of capital deployed.

Also introduced is capital formation through equity and debt financing, along with resource allocation concepts based on adjusted present value (APV) for assets in place and option pricing for capital investment opportunities. By appreciating the project evaluation criteria and the tools of financial analyses, engineers and engineering managers will be in a better position to win project approvals. A critical step to developing technological projects is the acquisition and incorporation of customer feedback. For managers to lead, the foremost challenges are indeed the initiation, development, and implementation of major technological projects that contribute to the long-term profitability of the company.

The important roles and responsibilities of marketing in any profit-seeking enterprise are then clarified, along with the supporting contributions expected of engineering managers. Numerous progressive enterprises are increasingly concentrating on customer relationship management to grow their business. Such a customer orientation is expected to continue to serve as a key driving force for product design, project management, plant operations, manufacturing, customer service, and a variety of other engineering-centered activities.

Part III addresses five major topics: engineers as managers and leaders, ethics in engineering and business management, Web-based enablers for engineering and management, globalization, and engineering management in the new millennium. These discussions provide additional building blocks to enhance the preparation for engineers and engineering managers to assume technology leadership positions and to meet the challenges of the new millennium.

Engineers are known to possess a strong set of skills that enable them to do extraordinarily well in certain types of managerial work. However, some engineers may also exhibit weaknesses that prevent them from becoming effective leaders in engineering organizations or even from being able to survive as engineers in the industry. The expected norms of effective leaders are described. Steps enabling engineering managers to enhance their leadership qualities and attune themselves to the value-centered business acumen are explained. Certain outlined steps should be of great value to those engineering managers who want to become better prepared to build new products and services based on technology, to integrate technology into organizations, and to lead technology-based organizations.

Many tried-and-true rules are included that serve as suitable guidelines for engineering managers to become excellent leaders. Above all, engineering managers are expected to point the way with a vision of how to apply company core competencies to add value, to have insight into how to capture opportunities offered by the emerging technologies, and to be innovative in making products and services better, faster, and cheaper, so that they constantly improve customer satisfaction. Also deliberated are the concepts of value addition, customer focus, time to market, mass customization, supply chains, enterprise resources integration, and others.

Although engineers are known to be ranked high in trustworthiness and integrity (ahead of businessmen, bankers, certified public accountants, lawyers, and others), it is important for all engineers and engineering managers to remain vigilant in observing a code of ethics, to uphold a high standard of honesty and integrity, and to become sensitive to other topics related to ethics.

The changes wrought by the Internet are transforming most aspects of company business, including information dissemination, product distribution, and customer service. As processor design, software programming, and transmission hardware technologies continue to advance, their roles in business will surely grow and affect various functions of engineering management in the future. Progressive engineering managers need to know what Web-based enablers of engineering and management are currently available and which ones can be applied effectually to promote product customization, expedite new products to market, align supply chains, optimize inventory, foster team creativity and innovation, and upgrade customer service. Presented in considerable detail is a comprehensive set of Web-based tools related to product design, manufacturing, project management, procurement, plant operations, knowledge management, and supply-chain management.

Globalization expands the perspectives of engineers and engineering managers further with respect to divergence in culture, business practices, and value. Globalization is a major business trend that will affect innumerable enterprises in the coming decades. Engineers and engineering managers must become sensitized to the issues associated with globalization. They must prepare themselves to contribute to those enterprises wishing to capture new business opportunities offered in the global emerging markets. They need to be aware of the potential effects of job migration due to globalization and to take steps to prepare themselves to meet such challenges. A useful contribution for engineers and engineering managers to make is to create global technical alliances to take advantage of new technological and business opportunities.

I obviously did not buy this book by choice (it was part of a graduate school class I was taking). Nevertheless, I have to say the book is very well organized and the ideas well presented. Definitely a book I recommend for the Engineering Management professional.

This book is very specific and to the point. Enough information to cover what engineering management is. The size of the book is space friendly but be careful whit the pages since the paper is extremely fragil, "read it away from water".
