Good read, but no useful problems worked

"Geotechnical Engineering" is a good read but I have yet to come across any useful example problems. This book is either for a novice/ enthusiast or expert who already knows how to perform all applicable calculations. For the student engineer who is learning the subject for the first time I would recommend something else.

Summary:
Pros: Interesting casual read
Cons: Grotesquely overpriced (this is a $60 book masquerading as a $180 book); concerning lack of sample calculations

Great Book for Starters Studying Geotech. Engineering or Plan on Studying Foundation Engineering

To be honest, I think this book deserves a lot more credit than what's being given on amazon. Although I am not using this text content in practice yet, it does the job of introducing the student to everything they need to start foundation engineering. I don't see any other purpose except a purely scientific one in this manner. So, I'd recommend this textbook over other more detailed textbooks of mostly equivalent content.

However, if one seeks a more Scientific understanding of the text content, I would reference Holtz text (1981) which is much cheaper, because that gives many more details about the supporting evidence for what you study. However, for specifically foundation engineering purposes, I recommend this text.

Lastly, if you are one who seeks a text to use in practice or refresh, I wouldn't recommend this or the Holtz text. I would recommend just picking up a foundation engineering text, because for people in this group, CLEARLY you all already know the basics. This is meant for the "basics" of soil mechanics. Don't say the foundation engineering text is basic, because it simply builds on this text content.

So, for those of you who are rating this book low, stop that and go ahead be the condescending prick your childish stanford phd ego wants to be and rate it low, because all you're doing it misleading the novices!

In this provocative, newly revised, and expanded survey, David Bjelajac punctures the idea of a uniquely American way of seeing or representation. Instead, he sifts painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, and contemporary new media within a broader material culture, documenting a visual history characterized by conflict and diversity—from European colonial settlement to the themed environments of Disney and art exhibitions in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in America.

Though broadly chronological, the book is structured around various themes, such as the animating power of religious imagery in the seventeenth century, the cultivation of republican virtue in the eighteenth century, and a split national identity in the Civil War era. Later chapters document the rise of a conflicted Avant-Garde, the populism and public art of the Depression years, and Modernist art and Postmodernist pluralism during the Cold War. The book concludes with a new chapter on globalization and the culture wars from the 1980s to 2003. Famous works by established names such as John Singleton Copley, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, Mathew Brady, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Georgia C)'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Judy Chicago, and Robert Gober are freshly interpreted next to vernacular imagery—a Masonic apron, an earthenware mug, a Quaker sampler, a satirical cartoon, or a labor union poster.

Dismissing the idea of art as a stately evolution of styles or "-isms", the author sees America's visual culture as an arena in which conflicting notions of class, gender, race, and regional allegiance are fought. Stepping outside traditional art-historical discourse, he launches boldly into the realms of politics, religion, science, literature, and popular culture in order to analyze individual art works within their specific historical contexts. Throughout, using generous quotations from primary sources, Bjelajac pays close attention to how contemporary artists, audiences, and beholders from different backgrounds have talked about specific works, the nature of art, and the artist's role in American society.

About the Author

David Bjelajac is professor of art and the human sciences at The George Washington University. He is the author of two monographs on Washington Allston, including Washington Allston, Secret Societies, and the Alchemy of Anglo-American Painting. He has contributed a chapter on "William Sidney Mount and the Hermetic Tradition in American Art" to The Visual Culture of American Religions (eds. David Morgan and Sally M. Promey).

Insightful Cultural History

Professor Bjelajac offers a clear and reasonably concise interpretation of the place of the visual arts in the evolution of American cultural. His choice of illustrative examples is well explained and helps the reader get a good picture of the changing nature of the visual arts in the U.S. I was particularly impressed with his argument that the search for a distinctively American style, especially in painting and sculpture, is most important for the nature of the effort to create a distinctive style, rather than the actual achievement of one.

I think this is the hardest to read book ever written. I'm very interested in the subjects in the book but they could be presented in a more engaging way. Why did he write this book?

The first and last chapters of this book make me wonder why the author actually decided to cover the subject. They show an increadible bias against the early colonists, Christianity, and western society in general. It makes me wonder why he wished to cover the topic of American Art History in the first place if he hates it so much. I also found his interpretations inaccurate on several occasions as he used scientific knowledge that would not have been known at the time the artwork was made.

He does, however have a very good selection of rare artwork and shows the mixing of diferent styles very well.

Interesting, but not comprehensive

In this book, David Kinsley takes a brief look at the murky area where ecological concerns meet religious ones. This is not an in-depth historical study; rather it's almost a series of vignettes, with each description of particular cultural practices serving to illustrate a paradigm for the nexus of these concerns. In other words, there's some fascinating stuff in here, but don't use this text as sole support for any general conclusions.

Warren Viessman, Jr. and Mark J. Hammer emphasize the application of scientific methods to problems associated with the development, movement, and treatment of water and wastewater. Treatment processes are presented in the context of what they can do, rather than compartmentalizing them along clean water or wastewater lines. The concept of total water management, recognizing that all waters are potential sources of supply, is a dominant theme.

About the Author

Warren Viessman, Jr. is Professor Emeritus with the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences, College of Engineering University of Florida. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs from 1990 to 2003, and prior to that was Chairman of the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences. Dr. Viessman is senior author of widely used textbooks on water supply and pollution control, hydrology, and water management. He has served on numerous national, regional and state committees and commissions, and is recognized for his outstanding contributions to water resources and environmental policy making and analysis at state and national levels. His many national awards attest to his efforts in these fields. He is an Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a registered professional engineer.

Mark L Hammer is Professor Emeritus of civil engineering and is an author of environmental engineering publications in the United States and Saudi Arabia. During his long tenure as a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dr. Hammer also served as the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Grant in Water Quality Control. He has taught at the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals and King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia, where he conducted environmental engineering research in addition to his teaching responsibilities. He is a member of the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation.

This seventh edition of Water Supply and Pollution Control has been updated and its coverage of topics expanded to meet the contemporary needs of civil and environmental engineering students. As we embark upon the twenty-first century, engineers responsible for providing safe water supplies to the inhabitants of this planet, and for treating wastes to render them reusable, will face many challenges. These include providing needed quantities of good-quality water for drinking and other household purposes, especially in water-short areas, and dealing with wastes that sometimes contain staggering levels of harmful substances. The engineers of tomorrow must be equipped to deal with a diversity of issues, such as forecasting future levels of population; estimating the potential for technological developments to reduce water requirements; recognizing that allocating water to meet human and other traditional water needs must also compete with water requirements for sustaining natural systems; exploring the impacts of climate change on local to global water supplies; and designing water supply and wastewater management systems to take into account technical, economic, environmental, social, legal, and political elements. The notion of continually striving to provide more water is giving way to one of husbanding this precious natural resource.

Water Supply and Pollution Control has been revised to include new material on standards, water and wastewater treatment processes, water distribution system analysis and design, water quality, advanced wastewater treatment for recycling, storm water management, and urban hydrology. In particular, there are major revisions of the chapters, or sections, on water supply and use (Chapters 3 and 4), water distribution (Chapter 6), hydraulics and hydrology of sewer and storm drainage systems (Chapter 7), monitoring of drinking water for pathogens (Chapter 8), membrane filtration (Chapter 10), disinfection/disinfection by-products rule (Chapter 11), biological treatment processes (Chapter 12), and indirect reuse to augment drinking water supply (Chapter 14). New topics, such as security of potable water supplies, the use of membranes in water treatment, and the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to water supply and wastewater management problems, have been introduced. There are more practical examples, and many new problems have been added. Consistent with the original intent of the book, the emphasis is on the application of scientific methods to problems associated with the development, movement, and treatment of water and wastewater. The book's tradition of presenting treatment processes in the context of what they can do, rather than in the context of water or wastewater treatment, is becoming more and more appropriate as we move toward the concept of total water management, recognizing that all waters are potential sources of supply. Water reuse is increasingly becoming an important national consideration. On the water supply side, more attention is paid to the sharing of water with natural systems and the impacts that this has on the quantities of water available for traditional water-using sectors, including public water supply. Many solved examples and homework problems serve to amplify the concepts presented in the text, and appropriate Web addresses have been provided where applicable.

Numerous sources have been drawn upon to provide subject matter for the book, and the authors have endeavored to provide suitable acknowledgment for them. The authors also wish to acknowledge the advice and assistance of students, professors, and practicing engineers who have reviewed and commented on previous editions. Good, could be better

As teacher of an Environmental Engineering course (at Ariel Academic College, Israel) and as consulting engineer, I find the book useful, but... Some areas are weak: Population and demand prognosis, Resource planning, Economic evaluation and optimization, Advanced water treatment (membrane and ion exchange technologies, for example), Desalination of brackish and sea water. Each chapter has a well explained exercise, a very useful feature, but most are non metric. All in all, I know of no better textbook, and it is worth its money.

Ultimate ESL Resource - - I Love It, My Students Love It ! !

By the authors of SIDE BY SIDE this is a much more colorful and better organized picture dictionary than the formerly more popular OXFORD PICTURE DICTIONARY. Whenever I bring it to class, if the students don't have it, the first thing atleast 70% will ask me is "Where can I get it ?" - - used with the accompanying flash cards (not included) you can teach entire (and substantive) lessons with just those two things alone... and even without it, you can use it to expand amply from whatever text book you're using. The chapters on the household, occupations, places around town, work activities are especially useful. In my begining classes we learn how to ask each other questions about these subjects, and begin all our classes discussing what we did over the weekend, what we did at work etc. etc. We talk about our house, our family... and all these topics are with Level 1 students, eye to eye (pair work, group work, class discussion)and facilitated by lessons from this book. - - Pictures get students talking and open them up and this is the ultimate resource ! ! !
As a tip, the students love looking at the pictures and discussing them, so to keep activities interactive, have students share books... or make worksheets where the students have to exchange information ! ! !

Great reference book!

Illustrations are somewhat dated and the colors on some pages need to be sharper but the book is quite thorough and a great pictionary overall.

Essential Classroom References

If I could have only one ESL reference tool in my classroom, it would be the Word by Word Picture Dictionary. This book is an invaluable resource in all ESL/EFL settings--from beginning to advanced, from pre-school through adult, in the U.S. and abroad.
We have placed a copy of this book in every classroom. I also encourage all incoming students to make this one of their first purchases. Indeed, Word by Word Picture Dictionary has quickly become the core of our curriculum.
