All High School & College Students Should Read This Book
By Michele W.
While attending community college, I was required to read this text for a class called: "Student Life Skills". While a lot of the information was more of a review for me personally, I feel that the topics covered within this text are definitely appropriate for high school students and especially college freshmen. I'm an "older" student--- going to college in my 30s----and as a result I found myself realizing that a lot of the suggestions in this book were things that I was already doing in my academic career.

This book is easy to read, clear and concise. The wording is simple and uses plain, everyday English. I also recommend utilizing as many online resources that the book has to offer. Even though it is geared towards college level students, high schoolers will certainly benefit.

Probably the best traffic engineering textbook out there
By Saif Eddin Jabari
From sight distance to freeway flow characteristics to signal coordination for arterials, this is the most comprehensive textbook I've seen on traffic engineering. The topics follow a very logical progression and many examples are given throughout. This book could serve as an excellent textbook for an undergraduate or first-year graduate traffic engineering class in addition to being a must have for practitioners. One way the book could be improved is by including a more thorough presentation of loop detectors, control cabinets, and how actuated signal timing plans actually play out from cycle to cycle, specifically with regards to actuated coordinated signals along arterials. Nonetheless, I still give the book a 5.

Good but has a ton of issues
By Matt
I have had this book for about three months now, its been a good book but recently as I have gotten further into it I am finding more and more mistakes in it. I have had problems where i use a table in the book and it says to interpolate and you can't even get the values they get in the example. Overall they need to check the math in the book and update the references they use many of them have been updated and not recently either.

Fire the editor and double check your math
By D. Park
This book does a good job of detailing the necessary warrants for various traffic issues but when attempting the problems and reviewing their examples, you become extremely thrown off with all the mistakes in the numbers. I've scribbled my own edits everywhere.

About the Author

James W. Brock is Moeckel Professor of Economics at Miami University (Ohio). He is the author of a number of books and articles on industrial organization and public policy, and has testified before various congressional committees on antitrust issues.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

Each day our lives intersect with major industries that comprise the American economy—from the agriculture that provides our food and the petroleum industry that supplies our gasoline, to the banks through which we conduct our financial affairs, the telecommunications we rely on, the beer that we (of legal age) imbibe, the acrid second-hand cigarette smoke we inhale, and the college sports that thrill us.

Individual industries also raise public policy challenges that are front-burner issues: accounting fraud that misrepresents the financial health of firms and bilks investors of billions; the exploding cost of health care; geopolitical events in Iraq, Venezuela, and elsewhere that trigger spikes in gasoline prices; the price and security of airline travel; the recording industry's relentless pursuit of those who download music; and concerns about global warming and fuel consumption in an automotive age of sport utility vehicles.

These issues, in turn, raise a host of economic questions: How are these industries individually organized and structured? What is their history? Who are their major producers and providers, and what market shares do they account for? What is the nature of competition in each of these fields, and how effective is it as a regulator of economic decision making? How well do these industries perform in terms of efficiency, innovativeness, and the allocation of resources? What are the major public policy issues in these fields, and what options are available for addressing them?

Unfortunately, these questions raise considerable interest, but economic treatments of them typically focus on putting theoretical expositions first, so that understanding of the industries themselves is haphazard and disjointed, with a glimpse of one here and a side glance at another there but no coherent understanding of an individual industry in its entirety.

Eleven editions of this book have been published to address this imbalance by treating each selected industry in a comprehensive way as an organic whole. Each edition has sought to invert the conventional economic-analytic paradigm by putting the industry front and center in order to provide a panoramic portrait. Methodologically, it is as much an exercise in induction—reasoning from the particular to the general—as it is a deductive process of deriving reality a priori from abstract postulates and assumptions. The approach, as Walton Hamilton put it in his classic Price and Price Policies, "is that of every day, of experience, of finding out"—of proceeding "by way of sample and type, of incident and detail"—based on the premise that "as a temptation to human curiosity industry can have few rivals." Each edition of this book also has striven to be fresh, with thorough updates of industries continued from preceding editions, and with new industries added to reflect changing contemporary interests and issues.

This latest edition once more offers a kaleidoscopic collection of individual industry studies that, it is hoped, readers will find useful for analyzing and understanding major industries in the American economy. Each chapter, written by an expert in the field, continues to offer a "live" laboratory for clinical examination and comparative analysis, as well as for evaluating public policies and options. The collection thus continues to serve as a useful supplement, if not a necessary antidote, to the economist's penchant for the abstractions of theoretical model-building.

In assembling this issue, the editor is appreciative for the contributors' conscientiousness in comprehensively and engagingly addressing their fields; for the production and marketing efforts of Gladys Soto, Jen Welsch, and their colleagues at Prentice Hall and BookMasters; and, especially, for Professor Pauline Adams's willingness to permit the book to continue to be published as a jointly-edited product—something it is hoped will be meaningful for the contributors, adopters, and readers who knew, worked with, and learned from Walter Adams.

Great book, awful binding in the paperback
By David Posner
Despite the product page listing a hardcover, the edition I received from Amazon was a soft-cover which had pages falling out of it from day 1. I ended up buying a hardcover edition at full price from the campus bookstore, which was thinner, printed on better paper, and had noticeably higher printing quality. I returned the softcover to Amazon as defective.

That said, the content of the book is excellent. The chapters are very readable both for reading start-to-finish or selectively reading only those parts you need at that moment. I will be keeping this book as a handy reference in years to come.

Conclusion: Great book. If you can get a hardcover copy, do so, even if it costs you a bit more.

This book is easy to read but covers all the complex topics in introducing the reader to geology and geological engineering principles. This is a great book for someone beginning in geology or geological engineering. Recommend it to anyone.

Took a while to ship
By Nick Clawson
Exactly what I needed for the semester. All you really need for college textbooks is the content, so whatever the book condition is doesn't really matter. The book condition was just fine. Just took a little while to get here. Too bad I didn't do better in the class, heh

To the Instructor Teaching Strategies

There are three popular strategies in teaching Java. The first, known as GUI-first, is to mix Java applets and GUI programming with object-oriented programming concepts. The second, known as object-first, is to introduce object-oriented programming from the start. The third strategy, known as fundamentals-first, is a step-by-step approach, first laying a sound foundation on programming concepts, control statements, methods, and arrays, then introducing object-oriented programming, and then moving on to graphical user interface (GUI), applets, and finally to exception handling, I/O, data structures, multithreading, and multimedia.

The GUI-first strategy, starting with GUI and applets, seems attractive, but requires substantial knowledge of object-oriented programming and a good understanding of the Java event-handling model; thus, students may never fully understand what they are doing.

The object-first strategy is based on the notion that objects should be introduced first because Java is an object-oriented programming language. This notion, however, overlooks the importance of the fundamental techniques required for writing programs in any programming language. Furthermore, this approach inevitably mixes static and instance variables and methods before students can fully understand classes and objects and use them to develop useful programs. Students are overwhelmed by object-oriented programming and basic rules of programming simultaneously in the early stage of learning Java. This is a common source of frustration for first year students learning object-oriented programming.

From my own experience, confirmed by the experiences of many colleagues, I have found that learning basic logic and fundamental programming techniques like loops is a struggle for most first year students. Students who cannot write code in procedural programming are not able to learn object-oriented programming. A good introduction on primitive data types, control statements, methods, and arrays prepares students to learn object-oriented programming. Therefore, this text adopts the fundamentals-first strategy, proceeding at a steady pace through all the necessary and important basic concepts, then moving to object-oriented programming, and then to using the object-oriented approach to build interesting GUI applications and applets with exception handling, I/O, data structures, multithreading, and multimedia as shown in the following diagram. The fundamentals-first approach can reinforce object-oriented programming by demonstrating how procedural solutions can be improved using the object-oriented approach. Students can learn when and how to apply OOP effectively.

This book is not simply about how to program, for it teaches, as well, how to solve problems using programs. Applying the concept of abstraction in the design and implementation of software projects is the key to developing software. The overriding objective of the book, therefore, is to teach students to use many levels of abstraction in solving problems and to see problems in small and in large. The examples and exercises throughout the book foster the concept of developing reusable components and using them to create practical projects.

Instructor Resources

The Instructor's Manual on CD-ROM is available for instructors using this book. It contains the following resources:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint slides for lectures, with interactive buttons to view syntax-highlighted source code and to run programs without leaving the slides.
  • Ten sample exams. In general, each exam has four parts: (I) multiple-choice questions or short answers (most of these are different from the ones in the Self-Test on the Web site); (2) correct programming errors; (3) trace programs; (4) write programs.
  • Solutions to all the exercises. Students will have access to the solutions of even-numbered exercises in the book's companion CD-ROM.
  • More than forty supplemental exercises and their solutions.
  • Suggested syllabi for teaching Java to beginning students, for teaching Java as a second language, and for teaching Java to corporate employees.

To obtain the Instructor's Manual, contact your Prentice-Hall sales representative. Some students have requested the solutions to the odd-numbered programming exercises. Please understand that these are for instructors only. Such requests will not be answered.

Microsoft PowerPoint slides are also available at the book's companion Web site at http://www.prenhall.com/liang/. The Web site also contains interactive online self-tests and other supplemental materials.

Lab Manual

The lab manual for the book was developed by Pete Dobbins of the University of Florida. To bundle it with the book, contact your Prentice-Hall sales representative.

Pedagogical Features of the Book

The philosophy of the Liang Java Series is teaching by example and learning by doing. Basic features are explained by example so that you can learn by doing. The book uses the following elements to get the most from the material:

  • Objectives list what students should have learned from the chapter. This will help them to determine whether they have met the objectives after completing the chapter.
  • Introduction opens the discussion with a brief overview of what to expect from the chapter.
  • Programming concepts are taught by representative Examples, carefully chosen and presented in an easy-to-follow style. Each example has the problem statement, solution steps, complete source code, sample run, and review. The source code of the examples is contained in the companion CD-ROM.
  • Chapter Summary reviews the important subjects that students should understand and remember. It helps them to reinforce the key concepts they have learned in the chapter.
  • Review Questions help students to track their progress and evaluate their learning.
  • Programming Exercises at the end of each chapter provide students with opportunities to apply the skills on their own. The trick of learning programming is practice, practice, and practice. To that end, the book provides a large number of exercises.
  • Interactive Self-Test helps students to test their knowledge interactively online. The Self-Test is accessible from the book's companion Web site at http://www.prenhall.com/liang/. It provides more than six hundred multiple-choice and true/false questions organized by chapters.
  • Notes, Tips, and Cautions are inserted throughout the text to offer valuable advice and insight on important aspects of program development.
    • NOTE: Provides additional information on the subject and reinforces important concepts.
    • TIP: Teaches good programming style and practice.
    • CAUTION: Helps students steer away from the pitfalls of programming errors.
What's New in This Edition

This book improves upon Introduction to Java Programming with JBuilder 4/5/6/7, Second Edition. The major changes are as follows:

  • The book is updated to JDK 1.4 and JBuilder 8/9. JBuilder 8/9 uses JDK 1.4.
  • The new edition tightly integrates JBuilder with Java to exploit many advantages of learning Java with JBuilder. JBuilder is not only an excellent tool for developing Java programs but also helps in learning Java effectively.
  • Debugging is introduced early in Chapter 2 and integrated in several chapters so that students can trace the execution of their programs to find logic errors.
  • The proprietary MyInput class for getting input from the console is replaced by the standard JOptionPane class. Students don't have to learn the proprietary Mynput class that is not used in the workplace.
  • Every chapter is thoroughly revised and improved in terms of content, presentation, examples, and exercises. Twenty percent of the examples and exercises were replaced by new practical applications, such as computing loan payments, taxes, and printing payroll statements.
  • Chapter 8, "Class Inheritance and Interfaces," in the second edition has been reorganized into two chapters in this third edition: Chapter 8, "Inheritance and Polymorphism," and Chapter 9, "Abstract Classes and Inheritance." New organization improves the presentation of object-oriented programming.
  • Chapter 10 in the second edition has been split into two chapters in this edition: Chapter 11, "Getting Started with GUI Programming," and Chapter 12, "Event-Driven Programming." This change enables Chapter 11 to be covered earlier.
  • The new Part V for bonus chapters covers the advanced Java features used in upper-level courses. This part is on CD-ROM only so that the main text is focused on the core subjects. Internationalization and networking have been moved to this part. Three new chapters on database programming, servlets, and JSP were also included in this part.
  • Optional materials, such as overview of computer systems, number systems, coding style guidelines, packages, HTML, event adapters, and rapid Java application development, are moved to the supplements. The supplements are contained in the CD-ROM only, so that the book is focused on the core subjects.

Preface

The Grid Computing discipline involves the actual networking services and connections of a potentially unlimited number of ubiquitous computing devices within a "grid." This new innovative approach to computing can be most simply thought of as a massively large power "utility" grid, such as the one that provides power to our homes and businesses every day. This delivery of utility-based power has become second nature to many of us, worldwide. We know that by simply walking into a room and turning on the lights, the power will be directed to the proper devices of our choice at that moment in time (on demand). In this same utility fashion, Grid Computing openly seeks, and is capable of, adding an infinite number of computing devices into any grid environment, adding to the computing capability and problem resolution tasks within the operational grid environment, and at the exact time it is needed (on demand).

What is the Importance of this Book?

The last few years we have witnessed the emergence of Grid Computing as an innovative extension to distributed computing technology, for computing resource sharing among participants in a virtualized collection of organizations. This technology leverages a combination of hardware/software virtualization, and the distributed sharing of those virtualized resources. These resources can include all elements of computing, including: Hardware, software, applications, networking services, pervasive devices, and complex footprints of computing power. Grid Computing is one technology enabler for some of the most innovative and powerful emerging industrial solution approaches, including the IBM On Demand strategies,1 HP utility computing,2 and Sun N1 technologies.3

The emergence of open standards has a great influence on this computing technology, especially in providing seamless Grid interoperability and Grid integration facilities. We could find that technologies of Grid Computing are still evolving; however, the alignment with industry-wide open standards, and the commercial interests, quickly placed this technology into a forerunning state for infrastructure and technology development. The most notable standard we have seen in this area of Grid is the Global Grid Forum's4 Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) initiative.

Until today, most of the work in Grid Computing has been concentrated at the academic, and standards level discussion and building custom solutions. However, the emergence of commercial utility services and the requirement for alignment with the rest of the organizational computing infrastructures hasten the development of open standards and interoperable commercial Grid solutions. This book is a detailed discussion on all aspects of Grid Computing, technology, applications, disciplines, and infrastructures. In this book we provide full treatment to covering the evolution of Grid Computing, existing Grid infrastructure components, emerging Grid service standards, and Grid architectures. In addition, we will explore detailed discussions on many prominent Grid middleware solutions.

What You Can Expect from This Book

We, the authors of this book, hope that you will find reading this book, an interesting and thought-provoking experience. In this book, we are introducing you to the basic Grid Computing principles, and to the emerging technology standards for Grid Computing. Readers will find this discussion interesting with a progressive evolution of technologies, discussed in this book in a concise, hard-hitting, and to-the-point fashion. We believe this will help the readers clearly understand the basic Grid Computing principles, the existing/emerging Grid standards, and their various usages models. We must be aware that the Grid standards are complex with a number of interrelations among themselves and other emerging standards such as XML and Web services. As we will see, this is a fast moving target and we should try to focus on this fact, early, so that we won't miss the opportunity to create Grid services and infrastructures suitable for each of our respective organizations or Grid initiatives.

In general, this book will explore:

  • The basic concepts of Grid Computing:Grid Computing discipline has been evolving over the past few years as a means of immense computing power and distributed data sharing facilities. We will discuss the many core aspects of these infrastructure components, and the high-level services built upon the Grid infrastructure as networking services.
  • How the Grid Computing is evolving as an open standard for resource sharing:The Grid Computing discipline is evolving. The focus is now on seamless interoperability and integration among participants of the Grid for better resources sharing. This is exceptionally challenging and a number of organizations are working collectively to provide an open and extensible standard and test beds for the Grid.
  • The influence of emerging technology standards on Grid infrastructure:Computing is always involving some process and form of evolution. New software standards and architectures are continually evolving to meet the requirements of global industries. The most notable and latest in this row are the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and the XML/Web services standards. These architectures and standards, as the reader will soon see, have tremendous influence in the emerging open Grid Computing standards.
  • The new Grid architecture and infrastructure:Based on the experience drawn form earlier Grid infrastructures, implementations, and the influence of the emerging open standards and technologies, the Grid computing standards organizations are designing an Open Grid Service Architecture (OGSA), and Open Grid Service Infrastructure (OGSI) for Grid computing. These important contributions will soon become the core platform for all the next generation Grid Computing technologies.
  • The most prominent toolkits and middleware solutions that will impact the Grid adoption:These open standards and technologies are not enough; we need real middleware solutions and high-level services using these standards and technologies. The most prominent middleware technology that exists today is Globus Toolkit.5 We will explore the details on this toolkit's robust architecture, and programming model capabilities to enable the latest Grid standards on the OGSI. In addition, we will explore some architectural concepts of the OGSI.NET6 toolkit, another notable implementation of the OGSI standard.
How this Book is Organized

This book contains 15 chapters, which are organized into five parts.

Part I—Grid Computing

Part 1 consists of Chapter 1. Chapter 1 provides a detailed but high-level introduction to the Grid Computing evolution, the applications, and the infrastructure requirements for any Grid environment. In addition, this chapter discusses Grid Computing disciplines, and the factors developers and service providers must consider during the implementation phases.

Part 2—Grid Computing Worldwide Initiatives

This chapter defines the problems of coordinated resource sharing, the concepts of virtual organization formation, and a protocol architecture solution for the Grid problems. In addition, this chapter examines the Grid in relation with other distributed technologies such as Web, object-oriented, distributed technologies, service provider's frameworks, clusters, and peer-to-peer computing.

Chapter 4: "The Grid Computing Road Map" is a brief. Here we will be discussing the current and prominent technology initiatives that are affecting the recent Grid Computing revolution. Some of the prominent technology initiatives that are acting as catalysts to the evolution are Business On Demand environments, autonomic computing, service oriented architectures and semantic Grid.

Part 3—The New Generation of Grid Computing Applications

Part 3 consists of Chapter 5. In this part we will explore the technology constructs of the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that will set the stage for the new generation of Grid Computing applications.

Chapter 5: "Merging the Grid Service Architecture with the Web Service Architecture." This is an extensive chapter, which defines the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and it's respective implementations, Web and Web services. Our discussion on Web services covers the details on extensible Markup Language (XML), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), and Web Service Description Language (WSDL 1.1/1.2). In addition, we will explore the details of Global XML Architecture (GXA) and some emerging standards (WS-Security, WS-Policy, WS-Addressing). Another notable area covered in the chapter is the Web service interoperability (WS-I) basic profile and the tools to assert the interoperability validations. We will end the chapter with a detailed discussion on Web service state management, the concepts around stateful interactions/applications, and how Grid networking services relate to stateful Web services.

Part 4—The Grid Computing Technological Viewpoints

Part 4 consists of Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, and Chapter 10. This part introduces the concept of Open Grid Service Architecture and the motivations that drive OGSA standardization. In addition to this, we will describe the OGSA architecture and the core infrastructure components for this architecture. This discussion will align Grid Computing with the other emerging technologies. In addition, we will define some of the core base services defined by the OGSA platform.

Chapter 6: "Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA)." This chapter will introduce the new OGSA architecture defined for Grid Computing. This is based on open standards and a Global Grid Forum initiative. This discussion introduces us to the architectural layers as defined by OGSA. This chapter will then set the stage for the forthcoming discussions on OGSA.

Chapter 7: "Some Sample Use Cases that Drive the OGSA." Any well thought-out architecture is driven from a set of use cases, which captures the scenarios, involved parties, and the solution requirements for the architecture. This chapter will introduce some representative sample use cases from various industry sectors to illustrate this process of requirements gathering.

Chapter 8: "The OGSA Platform Components." This is a simple chapter with an illustration on IBM vision for OGSA. This chapter enhances the OGSA architecture with more detailed layering and relationship with the other existing application and system components.

Chapter 9: "Open Grid Services Infrastructure (OGSI)." This chapter discusses one of the most important aspects of the OGSA, the core infrastructure foundation for all Grid services. In this chapter we will cover the details on this infrastructure that will define the behaviors for all Grid services created for OGSA, including state management, instance naming, life cycle management, and fault handling. This chapter covers the core interfaces defined by the specification and their significance and usage patterns. In addition to this, we will define the relationship between Web services and Grid services, the similarities and differences of their description mechanisms, and the significance of the Grid Web Service Description Language (GWSDL). In this chapter, one will realize a tremendous amount of valuable information on the core infrastructure software.

Chapter 10: "OGSA Basic Services." Based on the OGSI specification and the architecture requirements, a number of core services were developed in the Grid area. These services emerged from the requirements gathered from the use cases collected from various industry sectors. This chapter will introduce the readers to some of these prominent base services. This discussion covers the details on Grid services for resource management modeling, policy enforcement, service grouping, security, metering/accounting, logging, and distributed data management.

Part 5—The Grid Computing Toolkits

Part 5 consists of Chapter 11, Chapter 12, Chapter 13, Chapter 14, and Chapter 15. In this part, we will learn about some of the prominent and emerging middleware solutions implemented using the Open Grid Service Infrastructure (OGSI) standard. The most prominent in this group is the Globus Toolkit. This part will cover the final release's software framework, entitled "Globus Toolkit 3" or GT3. Our discussion includes the GT3 architecture, programming model, sample Grid service development, and high-level services. In addition to Globus GT3, we will see another most notable software framework called OGSI.NET, which is also a realization of the OGSI specification.

Chapter 11: "GLOBUS GT3 Toolkit: Architecture." This chapter is dedicated to the Globus GT3 architecture model. We will discuss this layered architecture model provided by GT3. This software is built on Java, and enables a container model for the Grid service life cycle and instance management. This chapter introduces the reader to the architecture plug-ability of GT3 with Web service engines, and hosting capabilities in J2EE/J2SE containers. In addition, this chapter explains the GT3 security mechanisms and client side architecture details.

Chapter 12: "GLOBUS GT3 Toolkit: Programming Model." This chapter provides a detailed and in-depth analysis of the programming model supported by the GT3 software. This discussion will introduce the reader to the core service programming concepts, service data management, notification, and query processing. In addition we will discuss the service configurations, tools, and tracing options. The discussion on the client side-programming model in this chapter is also worth mentioning. Other aspects that will be discussed include security, and various message exchange models.

Chapter 13: "GLOBUS GT3 Toolkit: A Sample Implementation." In this chapter we will explore a sample Grid service implementation using a top-down approach, starting with GWSDL for a sample search service. Our discussion will provide a detailed look into each step of this service implementation, with the tools involved and the respective codes generated. In addition, the development is done in a phased manner with added complexities in each layer. Another most valuable discussion provided includes the traces of the SOAP messages exchanged during this service invocation. This helps the reader to understand the OGSI standards, and the GT3 in particular, and will provide better interoperability. In short, our sample will provide service data management, and notification. Finally we end with an EJB delegation model support provided in GT3.

Chapter 14: "GLOBUS GT3 Toolkit: High-Level Services." These high-level services are for resource discovery and monitoring, including resource allocation and data management. The prominent services introduced in this chapter are Index services, Resource Information provider (RIP) services, Grid Resource Allocation and Management (GRAM) services, and data management services. In addition, this chapter introduces the component model for information services. This discussion includes provider components, service data aggregation components, and registry components.

Chapter 15: "OGSI.NET Middleware Solutions." This chapter provides information on another OGSI specification implementation in the Microsoft .NET environment. The reader will find a detailed discussion on the architecture and programming model for developing Grid services for .NET.

cheerleading more than technical
By I. Christou
The reason I purchased this book was a review I read in the IEEE Software journal, that recommended highly this book as a technical book that even steps the reader through an example implementation GRID service. Well, the first part of the book is the usual "GRID vision" hand-waving how GRID-based computing will realize the concept of "utility computing" where you turn on the switch, and presto, all the computing cycles you were starving for, are there, running your scientific or engineering code or whatever...

The book unfortunately is not well-written. Far too often, sentences are not syntactically correct, obfuscating the authors' intents. The book is definitely not suited as a technical reference, because by reading it there is no way you can implement a GRID "HelloWorld" service. And even when you read Sotomayor's tutorial on GRID services, that actually does guide you through your first GRID service using Java WS-Core, all you've done is figure out how to implement Web-services running on GT4. No mention of distributed computing, how to take advantage of parallelism inherent in a computation etc. etc.

So, overall, the book serves mostly as a layman's (or manager's) introduction into what GRID-computing wishes it will eventually be.

Comprehensive Description, but too Heavyweight?
By W Boudville
Grid computing is extensively described here as a means of providing high powered utility computing on demand. Currently, its potential is mostly unrealised. Many companies and universities have different grid implementations, as described by the authors. The universities' main motivation is to dragoon enough computing resources for hard research problems. While in the commercial sector, computer companies like IBM want to sell on demand access as a means of entering a hopefully vast new market.
The grid approaches in the book collectively can be contrasted with p2p computing. Grid systems tend to use more diverse and powerful hardware and relatively small number of users. Think of this as the high end, while p2p is low end (e.g. the SETI desktop application). The book describes the vast amount of effort that has gone into devising grid standards and the various toolkits, most notably Globus.
A potential problem which may occur to the reader of this book is the sheer complexity of the grid approach. Its proponents argue that this is necessary complexity. But perhaps a p2p methodology might be easier to understand and use.
An analogy is with the X.400 and X.500 email and directory standards. While these are used by some companies, many have not done so. Due to the complexity and slowness. Too heavyweight. The danger for grid computing is meeting a similar fate. It may end up occupying a small high value niche, but no more.

> > > > Destined to be a classic book in its field.
By Richard Murch
The authors have written a fine book on the potential, execution and practicality of Grid or Utility Computing. It is large ( 400 pages ) and well written book, technically accurate and blends well with other industry strategies such as on demand and Autonomic Computing. The chapters on open standards are particularly strong, well thought out and presented. The book is designed well and book production, diagrams, layout is nothing short of highest quality - in short, excellent.
The prospect of true utility computing is within reach and technically feasible. The authors bring together best deployment practices, practical guidance on integrating existing resources, and applicable case studies. This book goes a long way to assisting that projection and should become a classic standard in the field.
Full kudos~! - and a doff of the hat to both authors.
