About the Author

Jeffrey H. Reed is Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and a core-faculty member of its Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG), one of the world's leading university research groups on advanced wireless communications. Until recently he served as MPRG's director. His most recent book is Software Radio: A Modern Approach to Radio Design (Prentice-Hall, 2002, 0130811580). Professor Reed is a Fellow of the IEEE.

This book's additional contributors include government researchers and faculty and students at Virginia Tech's Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

PrefacePreface

To a great extent, this book was inspired by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency project called NETEX. The program manager, Stephen Griggs, recognized that far too little information about Ultra Wideband (UWB), particularly pulse-based UWB systems, appeared in the literature. Moreover, he believed that the UWB information available in the public domain is sometimes incorrect and misleading, particularly regarding interference issues with UWB. Thus, the program participants were encouraged to widely disseminate the results of the NETEX program to help clarify many of these outstanding issues. Much of the information presented in this book is a direct result of this program and other UWB research programs from Virginia Tech and the Army Research Lab.

UWB activity has picked up immensely since the Federal Communication Commission's 2002 decision to allow for the transmission of UWB and the subsequent standardization efforts with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Some see UWB as an enabling technology for new wireless applications that span from high-data-rate transmission of raw multimedia video to new location-aware, low-data-rate, and low-power communication of sensor data. Non-communication applications, such as through-the-wall imaging and ground-penetrating radar, also capture the imagination of researchers and entrepreneurs.

The controversy surrounding the standardization efforts illustrates the many debatable issues of UWB. From an academic perspective, many fundamental research issues remain unresolved, including the best modulation types for particular applications, efficient broadband antennas with a desirable form factor, propagation characteristics of UWB in various environments, the impact of UWB physical layer attributes on the networking layers, and the list continues. UWB will certainly be the subject of many theses and dissertations to come.

This book provides a broad technical view of UWB. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with simulation of propagation issues, modeling, and channel simulation, and much of this information is presented in the public domain for the first time. Chapter 4 focuses on antennas and outlines some surprising differences in antenna performance with respect to narrowband systems. Chapter 5 examines transmitter design issues and covers some of the basic modulation principles of UWB. Chapter 6 presents an overview of receiver design issues and explains how impulse UWB systems are particularly different from conventional carrier-based systems. Chapter 7 addresses the controversial interference issues of UWB; unlike traditional communications, UWB may intentionally transmit co-channel with other communication signals. Chapter 8 examines how to simulate UWB systems; such simulation requires more finesse because broadband signals encounter excessive simulation time if structured incorrectly. Chapter 9 describes how the physical layer capabilities of UWB impact the performance and design of upper layers. Finally, applications and case studies of existing UWB systems are addressed in Chapter 10.

About the Author

John Wolfe, Oklahoma State University: John recently was promoted to professor emeritus at Oklahoma State University. After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971 he was active in mathematics research including several publications and National Science Foundation research grants in Banach Space Theory. His enthusiasm for teaching has been recognized by awards from both the Mathematical Association of America and the Regents of Oklahoma State University. Over the past several years educational issues with a special passion for geometry have been the focus of his professional life. Woodworking, travel, camping and grandkids are becoming increasingly important in his life.

 

 

Douglas B. Aichele, Oklahoma State University: Douglas grew up in Great Neck, NY. He received his undergraduate and graduate education in mathematics at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has been a faculty member at Oklahoma State University for many years and was appointed Regents Professor in 1989. He is currently serving as Associate Head of the Department of Mathematics. Good teaching of mathematics has always been important to him and he has been recognized over the years by such institutions/organizations as the OSU Blue Key Alumni Association, Mathematical Association of America, and the University of Missouri-Columbia.His other interests reside mainly in the outdoors - particularly spending time with his family in the mountains of Colorado at a log cabin that he built by hand. He is an avid backpacker and hiker; he has climbed most of Colorado's Fourteeners (mountains with elevations greater then 14,000 ft.) and several mountains and glaciers near Juneau, Alaska.

No Answers to Problems in the Text!!!!

While this book has an incredible array of geometry ideas, lessons, and worksheets -THERE ARE NO ANSWERS FOR ANY OF THE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK.
Considering how expensive the book is, I think this is a real disservice to those educators purchasing it.

I find this book clear and easy to read on machining topics. The photographs and illustrations fit well with the text. Generally a worthwhile beginners to intermediate book for pre apprentice to 3rd year. However in future editions I would like to see ISO metric information on topics such as threads and tapers along with limits and fits. I would also like to see a change to more up to date toolposts and tool holders for the lathes.

VHDL for Engineers by Ken Short is a great book to introduce and teach any aspiring computer engineer the ways to write in VHDL. I admit, I was afraid of VHDL at first, but the book simplified things a lot. The power VHDL can do for programming PLDs is great and now I can do that. I recommend this book.

James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His service includes president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been Editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, The American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. About the Author

Dr. Steven A. Egger is a Professor of Criminology at the University of Houston Clear Lake and Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He was project director of the Homicide Assessment and Lead Tracking System (HALT) for the State of New York, the first statewide, computerized system to track and identify serial murderers. He has been researching serial murder since 1983.

He authored The Killers Among Us: Examination of Serial Murder and Its Investigations, Second Edition and Serial Murder: An Elusive Phenomenon. Dr. Egger has lectured on serial murder in England, Canada, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Dr. Egger has worked as a police officer, homicide investigator, police consultant, and law enforcement academy director. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University, where he completed the world's first dissertation on serial murder.

With his wife, Kim Egger, he is currently working on an encyclopedia of serial murder that will include entries on over 1,300 serial killers.

Preface

As a society, we have very little tolerance for homicide. When we can see some logic or rational reason for the killing, however, our tolerance for such an act is somewhat greater. It is much harder to find the rationale for an act of murder when the killer and the victim appear to have been strangers.

The reasoning behind the murder of a stranger defies our understanding. Such murders tend to increase our level of fear because of the apparent randomness with which victims are chosen. It cannot be denied that we are a violent society, prone to killing our friends, loved ones, and even acquaintances. But to kill a stranger, unless it is during the commission of another crime, is a definite threat to our society, an act that places us all at risk. A killer who intentionally chooses a stranger as his victim threatens our very social order.

The Myths of Serial Murder

The Silence of the Lambs, released in 1991, was an extremely popular movie and winner of several Academy Awards. Unfortunately, this movie has probably done more than any other single film, book, or television program to promote the mythology of serial murder—and to obscure the facts of the phenomenon.

It's regrettable that most attempts at objectivity or factual reporting on serial murder are colored with the sensationalism of fiction writers and journalists competing for the public's interest. Serial killers are typically presented as randomly killing strangers on our city streets, in our parks, or on university campuses; reliable factual reporting of these crimes is marred by the hype and horror seen in newspaper columns and in the thirty-second sound bites of prime-time television programs.

Movies, novels, and the press have all promoted a number of myths regarding serial murder. Chief among these myths are the following:

  • All serial killers had terrible childhoods, were beaten by their parents, and were sexually abused.
  • Serial killers are "mutants from hell" who do not resemble the average person in appearance and mannerisms.
  • Serial killers prey on anyone who crosses their paths and spend no time at all selecting their victims.
  • Serial killers have an uncanny ability to elude the police for long periods of time.

The serial killer fits the profile of a sex-starved man-beast, driven to kill because of a horrible childhood and the way society has treated him. He has had an unusual relationship with his mother. He travels alone across large geographic areas of the country and has an in-depth knowledge of police criminal investigative procedures, which allows him to elude local, state, and federal law enforcement. He is an insane and cowardly maniac who preys on the weak and helpless.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigates all serial murderers because most of them cross state lines.

Like all myths, these contain some degree of truth. But myths are not really helpful in dealing with the serial killer. In fact, myths make understanding these killers and catching them all the more difficult.

Through a Mirror, Darkly

It's important when analyzing the serial murder phenomenon to focus on the facts and not on the myths perpetuated by the media. Contrary to the images fed to us in The Silence of the Lambs and other works of fiction and nonfiction, the serial killer is not a hero but rather the mirror image of our potential selves. He can be seen as just like us, except that his avocation happens to be killing. We may develop a twisted infatuation with the fact that this person has killed and killed and killed again. We may marvel at his ability to commit the unthinkable, even though we ourselves have harbored such thoughts. To commit murder time and time again, to satiate the killer's continuing taste for death, has resulted in society's own insatiable fascination with these acts.

And here's the scariest part: Once caught, the serial killer who appears on our television screens and on the pages of our newspapers does not appear abnormal. We may label him insane or a "wacko," but deep down inside we see him as very much like ourselves—yet somehow different. It is this difference-yet-similarity that captures our attention and fascinates us.

My goal in writing this book is to provide a better understanding of these killers among us. To that end, I'll explore the theories behind serial murder, present detailed case studies of some of the most notorious serial killers of the past twenty years, and discuss how serial murders are investigated. You'll learn who these killers are and why they kill and kill and kill; you'll also learn what law enforcement is doing to track down and catch these deadly criminals.

It is my hope that when you're finished reading this book, you'll have a clear sense not only of the killers who perpetrate these crimes but also of their victims. There is no role for myth in the understanding of serial murder; the facts of the phenomenon are sobering enough.

What A Book - Full of Insight on Serial Killers

I had heard many myths about serial killers. I have seen the movies. I've read the books.

Serial killers have had horrific upbringing. They have been abused mentally, physically, and mentally. They have tortured little animals. These bad people and mutants from hell but the problem is that they fit in and could be your next door neighbor Bob. He could have a woman in his basement hooked up to wires to shock her every ten minutes while he is outside on a sunny day drinking a beer while he washes his car and talks baseball with you (go Boston go!). You never know. It could be Bob, Dave, Ted, Harold, Greg, Cary, Pat, Jeff, Pedro or any male name. (usually not a Debbi, Ann, Sue, Kathy, Mary)

They have an uncanny ability to elude the police while committing their vile acts. They prey on people they find attractive and weak who cross their path. They're not like us, well, maybe some of you. (if you are a serial killer please email me).

In The Need to Kill, the author is one of the field's leading researchers tells you who the serial killers and really are by name, location, and if they are currently active or inactive. This will allow you to stay away from any serial killers in your neighborhood. This book frightening me and made me scared and shake. I couldn't sleep. I won't even go outside to wash my car anymore.

The doctor draws pictures and 20+ years' of research-including experience as a homicide investigator (not an instigator). He provides clarity and hope to keep us away from these crazy serial killers.

Profiles are included of John Wayne Gacy (poor clown), Ted Bundy (bad teeth - his downfall), Henry Lee Lucas (not the Star Wars guy), me and Jeffrey Dahmer (eater of flesh...human flesh, now dead, someone ate him in prison). You'll go into the serial killers mind and body and you won't like it but you must.

You will be terrifying and really really scarededed. The Need to Kill is the one book that truly illuminates the mind of these bad bad people. Bad people. REDRUM over and over again.
