This resource provides a store of tested, easy-to-use exercises, games, and activities to help reading specialists and classroom teachers correct students' individual reading skill dificiencies at the primary, intermediate, and upper levels.

It includes 234 sequentially organized activities in the basic skill areas of phonic analysis, structural analysis, comprehension, and oral reading, as well as a special selection of activities in the area of survival reading skills that will be especially useful with readers in the intermediate and upper grades.

Also included is a reproducible "Individual Pupil checklist of Reading Skills" which lists the skill as they are usually encountered in the reading skills continuum and can be used to keep a record of each child's reading skill needs..

Each corrective game or activity is keyed to the Checklist and gives you all of the details and directions necessary for its successful use:

Purpose: the specific skill/subskill reinforced
Construction: procedure for preparing any special item required

About the Author
Stephen A. Pavlak, Ph.D., has taught and supervised reading on both the elementary and secondary levels. As a reading supervisor, he organized a complete diagnostic and remedial reading program in his own school district.
Since 1971, Dr. Pavlak has been on the faculty of the California University of Pennsylvania, where he presently serves as chairperson of the Elementary Education Department and teaches in the Reading Program. He also serves as a consultant to public and private schools on the development of reading programs and has participated in many reading and language arts programs on the local, state, and national levels.
Dr. Pavlak earned his M.Ed. degrees in Elementary Education and Reading from the California University and his Ph.D. with a major in reading from the University of Pittsburgh.

Excellent Resource

This book is a great companion to the diagnostic manual "Informal Tests for Diagnosing Specific Reading Problems," as an OT working in the pediatric setting I use it frequently. It is designed to be used in the classroom setting, though I find that it is easily adapted for one-on-one use and for giving parents an idea of home program activities to improve reading problems that are affecting functioning in the school setting and for adolescents with survival reading issues. It is becoming increasingly difficult for public school students to get the testing and accommodations that they need due to time constraints, budget issues, and ridiculous legislation; this is a resource that could be used by professionals and go-getter parents alike to fill in the gaps and take action for correcting reading problems before an already frustrated and delayed student becomes hopelessly behind. Cannot speak highly enough of what a valuable collection this is for the price. As an aside, these are not just worksheets to photocopy, there are hands-on, easily reproducible activities that don't require parents or teachers to spend a lot of money on supplies or equipment.
