In today's business climate, the rules of competition have changed. Organizations are forced to eliminate the process of reinventing the wheel each time a new business problem arises that forces the enhancement of an existing system or implementation of a new one. Enterprise architecture is the practice that allows organizations to build foundations they need to survive and adapt to present and future business challenges. Sound enterprise architecture supports the ability to stay agile, provides for increased return on investment, and creates a framework for making future technology decisions.

Enterprise architecture identifies the main components of an organization and how components in the organization's nervous system function together to achieve defined business objectives. These components include personnel, business processes, technology, financial information and other resources. If decisions about components and their interrelationships are uncoordinated, minimally effort and resources will be duplicated; performance and management problems will arise and will result in the loss of agility. Enterprise architecture done correctly will ensure the choice of appropriate components and will specify how each component will operate together in a fluid manner that increases organizational efficiencies.

Enterprise architecture is one of the most challenging roles in information technology today. Many aspects of the role are technical while much more of it is about interaction. Many people who have this position have significant responsibility but do not have authority or control. Enterprise architecture as an area of study allows one to focus on interesting, complex problems, to advance on the corporate ladder, and to maintain technical competencies while making a colossal difference to the enterprise.

Enterprise architecture requires skill sets not normally taught in university curriculum or acquired on the job. Even good architectures are rarely accepted without formidable challenges. The successful architect has to overcome any aversion to politics and become the evangelist of architecture in the eyes of its various stakeholders. Architects cannot simply buy into any vision that is articulated. Any involvement in the implementation of enterprise architecture requires one to understand it. The most successful architecture will have an architect that can describe the motivation behind architectural choices. Likewise, a successful architecture has an architect who leads the architecture team, the development team, the technical direction of the enterprise, and sometimes the organization itself. The primary focus of this book is to be a guide and trusted advisor to those who want to be successful in this role.A wise enterprise architect once worked for a very well-respected organization (name intentionally withheld). He was passionately engaged in a conversation with a senior executive about what direction the organization should take with its information systems. His recommendations fell on deaf ears until he asked the executive three very simple questions:

  • How can we have a viable customer relationship management strategy when we do not even know where all of our customer's data reside?
  • How does our technology spending equate to enabling our strategic business goals?
  • Does our organization have an operational process model?

As you can surmise, the answers to these questions were not known. Many executives in information technology are not knowledgeable about what it takes to guide the architecture in the direction that results in the biggest bang for the buck. Sadly, many executives have lost control of the ship they steer, which has resulted in bloated infrastructures and conclusions being made on whims rather than on sound principle-based judgment and experience.In many organizations, the annual budget cycle starts with clueless, disruptive questions such as "How many servers do we have?" or "Let's get the new Intel 3333 GHz machines as desktops." None of these statements is appropriate for a discussion about enterprise architecture. A good architecture addresses the following:

  • The organization's business and information needs
  • Leverage of the synergistic relationship between return on investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO)
  • The ability to support migration from the current state (as-is)
  • The ability to support easy migration to the organization's desired future state
  • Ways to support the business objectives of reducing costs, improving operational service, and increasing revenue

Many organizations will claim to have an architect who creates architecture. Others will attempt to buy a nicely packaged architecture from one of the Big Five consulting firms without having a clue as to what they are getting. If your architecture does not address the following principles, you may be doing more harm than good:

  • Data are separated from logic (business functions).
  • The principles of modularity are observed by ensuring that each component within the enterprise architecture performs only one or two discrete tasks.
  • Functions are separated into differentiated tasks that are generic and self-contained.
  • The architecture is self-documenting. If it isn't, something is wrong.
  • All data and artifacts that are generated by an organization are managed and maintained by the same organization.
  • The architecture is technically feasible and can be implemented at a reasonable cost within a reasonable time frame.
  • The architecture is traceable from business requirement to technology implementation.
  • Logical architecture is separated from physical architecture.

The term architect was derived from the building trade. The building of a corporation's nervous system is directly comparable to building a house. One may say, "I have no clue about how to build a $50 million dollar skyscraper, let alone a $50,000 house." Yet the response to both tasks is simple: They are accomplished by creating blueprints.

Blueprints show how a house will be constructed. They provide multiple views, each expressing its own level of detail. One view of the house may include all the electrical circuits that are of extreme value to an electrician. Likewise, the plumber will need a blueprint to show where all the pipes and water should go. Enterprise architecture diagrams the blueprints for all of the people within an organization so they know how to build an agile enterprise. The enterprise architecture blueprint is meant to provide sufficient detail to allow the idea to become a reality when put in the hands of skilled professionals, much as a house blueprint does.

We do not mean to imply that building a skyscraper is as easy as building a house. A decade ago, Garlan stated, "As the size and complexity of software systems increases, the design problem goes beyond the algorithms and data structures of the computation: designing and specifying the overall system structure emerges as a new kind of problem. . . . This is the software architecture level of design." Garlan 1992.

Enterprise architecture within this context seeks to solve for intellectual manageability. Architecture of large projects and their complexity arise from broad scope, massive size, novelties of the minute, currently deployed technologies, and other factors. The goal of enterprise architecture in this situation is to provide a manner to hide unnecessary detail, simplify difficult-to-understand concepts, and break down the problem into better-understood components (decomposition).

Complexity also arises within organizations due to processes used in building the system, the number of people who are involved with construction, the introduction of the possibility of outsourcing and geographically dispersed teams, and the organizational funding model. Ideally, enterprise architecture can assist, but not eliminate, the management of the process by providing clearer separation of concerns, enhancing communications, and making dependencies more manageable.

Building enterprise architecture is difficult but not impossible, as long as one sticks to architectural principles. The architectural blueprint defines what should be built, not how or why. Project plans document the how, and their creation is best left to individuals who have studied project management. The why is best left to one's business customer, as all architecture should be business-driven.

A word of advice: A good architecture provides agility but also provides constraints. A highly successful architecture will remove points of decision from those who are traditionally accustomed to having a free-for-all, making decisions impulsively or reacting to the opinions of those who are uninformed. Good architects will see things that make their heads hurt, but their aspirin is in knowing that their hard work and persistence will result in the reduction of future problems. Helping others see the value of enterprise architecture is crucial, as it brings benefit to the enterprise even if decisions have local consequences.

The idea for this book came about during a lunchtime conversation between two of its authors. They were reminiscing about why the computer field was the only field in which one could become a manager, director, or even vice president without any computing experience. During this lunchtime conversation, we compared the computer field to such other professional fields as accounting, the practice and enforcement of law, and medicine.

Imagine that the town you live in is looking to hire a new police chief. Can you have confidence in the chief if he has never been a police officer? Furthermore, what if the prospective chief does not know how to use a gun and has no knowledge of proper investigation procedures? Extend this concept by envisioning a former McDonald's manager applying to be a partner at an accounting or law firm simply because he is a leader. The partners in the legal and accounting fields are leaders, but they also retain current knowledge of their professions and can argue a case or balance one's books. With relevant experience, the prospective police chief is a leader, too, and most likely remembers how to write a parking ticket and perform other cop-on-the-street duties.

Getting to the root of this problem cannot be done quickly. Unlike other fields, in the computer field you can have the title of architect but not necessarily know your job. The information technology field is constantly evolving and ever-changing. For the motivated, it requires long hours reading numerous books by the thought leaders of the industry. Even for the most diligent, the goal of achieving knowledge and enlightenment may never be fulfilled.

Many businesses are faced with such challenging problems as technology changing rapidly, employees with limited skill sets, smaller budgets, and less tolerance for failure. The only way one can be successful in this new order is to learn a new strategy. Today's businesspeople no longer have the opportunity to learn from their failures.

Developing an enterprise architecture is a difficult task. It requires refinement of overlapping and conflicting requirements; invention of good abstractions from those requirements; formation of an efficient, cost-effective implementation; and ingenious solutions to isolated coding and abstraction evils. Additionally, enterprise architects must manage all this work up to a successful finish, all at the lowest possible cost in time and money. The only way this can be truly accomplished is by remaining agile.

In an agile approach, architects assume responsibilities beyond modeling and conceptual design. They must minimally serve as technical advisors to project managers. This is analogous to industrial engineers and their relationships to architects in the construction fields.

Many of the thoughts presented will assume an agile approach to explaining the solutions to the problems presented. An understanding of agile methods for software development will help readers become more successful in implementing practical enterprise architecture.

Good introduction

This is a good introduction to the field of enterprise architecture. It generally doesn't go into technical detail, so anyone should be able to get something out of it. Also, it is to the point and so mercifully short. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that the book has six authors and it shows. There is no red thread running through the chapters, even if the chapters themselves are good.

Don't bother

book does not discuss enterprise architecture -- doesn't cover some of the methods, frameworks, and the purpose for EA. Doesn't even give a definition of what EA is. Contains several disjointed chapters with topics that are remotely related to EA but does not even begin to tie together or address the queston "what is EA?" You can do better with free online resources.

The title is misleading. The book is NOT a practical guide to Enterprise Architecture

The title 'A Practical Guide to Enterprise Architecture' led me to expect a book that dealt with the processes, challenges and techniques for creating an ENTERPRISE architecture. It does not. The book is about various technology frameworks. The Contents lists Systems Architectures, Solution Architectures and Service Oriented Architectures but not Enterprise Architecture. Enterprise Architecture is skimmed over in the Preface. The book barely touches on Zachman and Spewak and Hill. It ignores FEAF, TEAF, TOGAF, PERA, C4ISR, the Clinger-Cohen Act and other ENTERPRISE stuff completely. Enough said. Whatever this book is, is it is NOT a practical guide to ENTERPRISE Architecture. The book may be of use to technical architects designing solution-frameworks to support an Enterprise Architecture.

About the Author

Michael B. Cutlip is an emeritus professor in the Department of Chemical, Materials, and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Connecticut. He is a coauthor of POLYMATH. His research interests include chemical and electrochemical reaction engineering.

Mordechai Shacham is the Benjamin H. Swig Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He is a coauthor of POLYMATH . His research interests include analysis, modeling, regression of data, applied numerical methods, and prediction and consistency analysis of physical properties.

Book Overview

This book provides extensive problem-solving instruction and suggestions, numerous examples, and many complete and partial solutions in the main subject areas of chemical and biochemical engineering and related disciplines. Problem solutions are clearly developed using fundamental principles to create mathematical models. An equation-oriented approach that enables computer-based problem solving on personal computers is utilized. Efficient and effective problem solving is introduced employing numerical methods for linear equations, nonlinear equations, ordinary and partial differential equations, linear and nonlinear regressions, and polynomial curve fitting. Basic to advanced problem solving is covered utilizing a novel integrated approach with three widely used mathematical software packages: POLYMATH, Excel, and MATLAB. Readers may choose to focus on one or more of these software packages or utilize another mathematical software package.

The book and a dedicated web site (http://www.problemsolvingbook.com) furnish all necessary problem information, software files, and additional enrichment materials. For advanced applications, unique software tools are provided for solving complex problems such as parameter estimation in dynamic systems and solution of constrained systems of algebraic equations.

For professionals, it can be an invaluable reference book that also allows extensive self-study in problem solving using the most widely used software packages.

Background

Prior to the introduction of the personal computers and mathematical software packages in the early 1980's, desktop calculations for engineering problem solving were mainly carried out with hand-held calculators. Sometimes mainframe computers were utilized, which required source code programming. Since then the emphasis has gradually moved to computer-based (or computer-enhanced) problem solving or CBPS on desktop or notebook computers. By the time the first edition of this book was published in 1999, it became evident that CBPS can be a very important, or possibly the most important, application of the computer in scientific and engineering education and in industrial practice.

The first edition of this book provided examples to the use of CBPS in core chemical engineering subject areas using the POLYMATH software package. Shortly after the publication of the first edition, we carried out several comparison studies in order to determine what types of software packages should be included in the "toolbox" of the engineering student and the practicing engineer that would enable the effective and efficient solution of practical problems. We arrived at the conclusion that three types of software are needed. There is a need for a numerical problem solver, such as POLYMATH, that accepts the model equations close to their mathematical forms and provides their numerical solution with very minimal user intervention. Additionally, there is also a need to be able to use spreadsheet software, such as Excel, because of its wide use in business and industry. Software like Excel is also used for the organization and presentation of information in tabular and graphical forms and for database management-related operations. Software packages that support programming, such as MATLAB, are needed to implement algorithms which are required in graduate research and advanced mathematics, programming, control, and numerical analysis courses.

It is increasingly important for today's engineering student and forward-looking engineering professionals to be proficient in the use of several software packages, and thus we greatly expanded the book so that it now includes solutions in Excel and MATLAB, in addition to POLYMATH. New problems have been introduced that demonstrate how the special capabilities of each of these packages can best be utilized for efficient and effective problem solving.

The POLYMATH Numerical Computation Package

The POLYMATH package provides convenient solutions to most numerical analysis problems, including the problems that are presented in this book. We authored and published the first PC version of POLYMATH in 1984, and it has been in use since then in over one hundred universities and selected industrial sites world wide. The version available at the time of the publication of the book, POLYMATH 6.1, was released in 2006. This package contains the following programs:

Ordinary Differential Equations Solver

Nonlinear Algebraic Equations Solver

Linear Algebraic Equations Solver

Polynomial, Multiple Linear, and Nonlinear Regression Program

The programs are extremely easy to use, and all options are menu driven. Equations are entered in standard form with user-defined notation. Results are presented in graphical or tabular form. A sophisticated calculator and a general unit conversion utility are available within POLYMATH.

The new and unique capability of the latest POLYMATH to automatically export any problem to Excel and MATLAB with a single keypress is extensively utilized within this book. Automatic export to Excel includes all intrinsic functions and logical variables. A POLYMATH ODE_Solver Add-In is included for solving ordinary differential equations in Excel. Upon export to MATLAB, the equations are ordered in the computational sequence, the intrinsic functions and logical statements are converted, and a MATLAB function is generated. Template files to run the functions are available in the HELP section of POLYMATH or from the book's web site.

Many departments and some universities have obtained site licenses for POLYMATH. These licenses allow installation in all computer labs, and individual copies can be provided to all students, faculty and staff for use on personal computers. Use of This Book

This book is intended to serve as a companion text for the engineering student, the faculty instructor, or the practicing engineer. The instructions in the practical use of mathematical software package on representative problems from most chemical and biochemical engineering subject areas provide direct insight into problem setup and various practical aspects of numerical problem solving. For the undergraduate student at the early stages of his/her studies, the book can serve as the textbook for learning to categorize the problems according to the numerical methods that should be used for efficient and effective solutions. It provides basic instruction in the use of three popular and widely used software packages: POLYMATH, Excel, and MATLAB. Emphasis is on setting up problems and effectively obtaining the necessary solutions.

In addition to providing general numerical solving capabilities, the text gives problems in most subject areas so that it can serve as a reference book in most courses, as it provides example problems that can be illustrative of problems that may be assigned in the various courses. The book also provides help with problem solving in advanced level for problems often encountered in undergraduate and graduate research such as nonlinear regression, parameter estimation in differential systems, solving two-point boundary value problems and partial differential equations, constrained equation solving, and optimization.

For the practicing engineer, the book serves as resource book in computer-based problem solving. It provides a solid foundation in problem solving and can develop basic and advanced skills in the utilization of spreadsheets. Practical problems illustrate various problem solving approaches that can be implemented for problem formulation, problem solving, analysis, presentation of results, and documentation. Of particular interest is the coverage of the correlation and regression of data with statistical analysis. All of the book's problems can be solved with the Excel spreadsheet software that is widely used in industry.

Engineering faculty can use the book to introduce numerical methods into an individual course, a sequence of courses, or an entire departmental curriculum. This book provides supplementary problems that can be assigned to students in order to introduce numerical problem solving which is avoided in most textbooks. Many of the problems can be easily extended to open-ended problem solving so that critical thinking skills can be developed. The numerical solutions can be used to answer many "what if" type questions so that students can be encouraged to think about the implications of the problem solutions. The book can also be used as a companion textbook for an introductory computer programming course or a comprehensive course in numerical analysis.

Book Organization

All the chapters of the book, except the introductory Chapter 1, are built around problems that serve to provide practical applications in a particular subject area. Most of the problems presented in the book have the same general format for the convenience of the reader. The concise problem topic is followed by a listing of the engineering concepts demonstrated by the problem. Then the numerical methods utilized in the solution are indicated just before the detailed problem statement. Each of the problems presents the detailed equations and parameter values that are necessary for solution, including the appropriate units in a variety of systems, with Systeme International d'Unites (SI) being the most commonly used. Because of the wide variety of problems posed in this book, the notation used has been standardized according to one of the major Prentice Hall textbooks in the various subject areas whenever possible. Physical properties are either given directly in the problem or in the appendices.

The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, which includes the first six chapters, subjects of general interest are presented, some on an introductory level and some on an advanced level. In Chapter 1, Introduction, the history of CBPS is briefly reviewed and guidelines are provided for categorizing problems according to the numerical techniques that should be used for their solution. Chapter 2, Basic Principles and Calculations, serves a dual purpose. The chapter introduces the reader to the subject material that is typically taught in a first chemical engineering course (in most universities called Material and Energy Balance, or Stoichiometry). Additionally, this chapter demonstrates the use of POLYMATH for solving simple problems belonging to the main categories discussed in the book, namely single nonlinear algebraic equations, systems of linear algebraic equations, linear and polynomial regression, and systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs).

In Chapter 3, Regression and Correlation of Data, the application of POLYMATH for analysis and regression of data using advanced statistical techniques is demonstrated. Chapter 4, Problem Solving with Excel, introduces the reader to the engineering and scientific problem solving capabilities of Excel using problems belonging to the same categories as in Chapter 2. The automatic export capabilities of POLYMATH to Excel are discussed. More advanced topics such as solution of systems of nonlinear algebraic equations (NLEs) and optimization with constraints (nonlinear programming) are also presented.

In Chapter 5, Problem Solving with MATLAB, MATLAB is used to solve the problems presented in Chapter 4. The capability of POLYMATH to automatically generate MATLAB m-files are presented and provided templates for MATLAB problem solutions are demonstrated and utilized. In Chapter 6, Advanced Techniques in Problem Solving, the problem solutions deal with advanced topics such as two-point boundary value problems, systems of differential-algebraic equations, partial differential equations, and parameter estimation in systems of differential equations.

The second part of the book (Chapters 7 through 14) is organized according to the particular subject areas such as Thermodynamics (Chapter 7), Fluid Mechanics (Chapter 8), and so forth. The content of these chapters is presented in the typical order of coverage in college or university-level courses.

New Content in the Second Edition

The contents of the book were almost doubled by adding six new chapters to the eight chapters of the first edition. The introductory Chapter 1 was added in order to help the reader in a very critical step of the problem solving--the characterization of the problem in terms of the solution method that has to be used.

After studying and verifying the importance of various software packages in effective and efficient problem solving, the two chapters dealing with the use of Excel and MATLAB were added. These chapters also introduce the new capability of the POLYMATH software to automatically convert a problem solution into Excel worksheets and MATLAB m-files. This considerably shortens the learning curve associated with the initial use of these packages.

Since the first edition was published, biochemical engineering has gained importance and is now being taught in most colleges and universities. The new biochemical engineering chapter and selected problems in other chapters provide a wide selection of problems in this important subject area. New chapters on "Phase Equilibria and Distillation" (Chapter 12) and "Process Dynamics and Control" (Chapter 13) have been added.

Good source of ChE problems!

From the perspective of a ChE instructor, I found this textbook a very good source of homework and mid terms problems. If you are teaching a numerical method course or one where modeling and simulation is the focus, this is a textbook for your personal library. The problems range from linear, non-linear equations, ODE to PDE equations that can be solve using the "method of lines". You can find a nice range of topics, including bioreactors, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, chemical reactions, process control, etc. Partial solutions are given to most of them. From the book's Web Site you can download many solved problem files in MATLAB, EXCEL AND POLYMATH; unfortunately, students also can download them. The Appendix includes a nice classification of all the problems, according to their application area (thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mass transfer, etc.).

If you are hoping to learn programming, in particular MATLAB, this is not the textbook. MATLAB is used in almost all the chapters; unfortunately, the "method of lines" solutions are in POLYMATH.

Last, but not least; the price of the textbook is just perfect ($47) considering all the time you can save with this source of solved problems.

I was pleased with the step-by-step guide in the book, very helpful when using these tools. Downside is my book came with quite a bit of damage, but the content is very good for those that wants to learn to model biochemical kinetics in Polymath or MATLAB.

This Elementary Surveying: An Introduction to Geomatics, Tenth Edition has been updated to reflect the changing nature of modern surveying practice—currently often referred to as "geomatics." Since this new term is now generally accepted in English-speaking countries worldwide, and is consistent with modern practice as currently evolving in the United States, it is an appropriate addition to the book's title. It is hoped this new edition will not only serve the needs of its traditional surveying and engineering users, but that it will also be suitable for the expanding audience of spatial data users in various other disciplines.

Written primarily for freshman and sophomore students at the college level, the authors have endeavored to present a readable text that presents basic concepts and practical material in each of the areas fundamental to modern surveying (geomatics) practice. Although the book is elementary, its depth and breadth also make it ideal for self study. This tenth edition includes more than 400 figures and illustrations to help clarify discussions, and numerous example problems are worked to illustrate computational procedures.

The order of chapters in the book has been reorganized to better accommodate schedules followed in most surveying laboratories, particularly those in northern climates. Thus, the material on leveling has been presented ahead of distance measurement by taping and electronic methods. Discussions of total station instruments and angle measurements follow these topics. Recognizing the increasing importance of the global positioning system (GPS), this subject has been ;.moved forward in the chapter sequence to follow total station instruments and o; angle measurements. Also the GPS coverage has been expanded into two chapters—Chapter 13 introduces the principles of GPS operation, and Chapter 14 discusses field and office procedures in using the equipment. The subjects of leasts-quares adjustments and coordinate geometry have been upgraded and moved from the appendix into separate chapters in the main text. This is consistent with the increasing importance of these two topics, which have become so vital in connection with both GPS and geographic information systems (GIS).

In keeping with the goal of providing an up-to-date presentation of surveying equipment and procedures, total stations are stressed as the instruments for making angle and distance measurements. Transits and theodolites, which are now only rarely used in practice, are just briefly introduced in the main body of the text. Similarly, automatic levels are now the dominant instruments for elevation determination, and accordingly their use is stressed. Dumpy levels, which nowadays are seldom used, are only briefly mentioned in the main text. However, for those who still use these instruments, they are covered in more detail in Appendix A.

In addition to the major changes noted above, other additions, revisions, and modifications have been made throughout the book. These include the following: A new section on surveying safety has been added, and the use of metric units has been expanded in discussion, in example problems, and in after-chapter homework problems. The latest versions of surveying equipment are presented, and include such devices as digital levels, reflectorless EDM instruments, laser alignment equipment, digital cameras and scanners. Discussion of metric stationing has been expanded within the topics of profile leveling, horizontal and vertical curves, and construction surveying. The material on state plane coordinates has been updated, and the chapter on control surveying has been substantially revised and expanded to present some introductory concepts of geodesy, and also provide greater depth of coverage on datums and reference coordinate systems. The coverage of condominium surveys has been expanded in the chapter on boundary surveys. In the chapter on photogrammetry, modern procedures and equipment have been presented, including the latest developments in softcopy photogrammetry and digital orthophoto production. Discussions on interfacing an aerial camera and GPS equipment in the aircraft to supplement ground control, and new airborne laser mapping systems are also presented. The chapter on GIS has been revised and updated. Website addresses that enable students to obtain additional information on many different topics are given throughout the book. Also, the bibliographies that follow each chapter have been updated.

A compact disc containing many useful computer programs accompanies the book. The CD has its own documentation in the form of help- and sample-data files. The disk contains programs for traverse computations for polygon, link, and radial traverses; area calculations; astronomical azimuth reduction; two-dimensional coordinate transformations; horizontal and vertical curve computations; and least-squares adjustments. It also contains trial versions of field-to-finish software.

As with past editions, this text continues to emphasize the theory of errors in surveying work. At the ends of most chapters common errors and mistakes related to the topics covered are listed so that students will be reminded to exercise caution in all of their work. Practical suggestions resulting from the authors' many years of experience are interjected throughout the text. More than 1000 after-chapter problems are presented to give instructors a wide choice in making assignments. A solution's manual is available to instructors who adopt the book.

Wolf: Elementary Surveying (an educator's point of view)

As an educator of over 20 years, I have used many elementary texts on surveying. This is by far the most comprehensive and easy to understand book for the student wishing to learn from the basics to advanced surveying topics. One of the things that I like about this book is that I have found it is applicable to both the on campus courses at the University of Wyoming as well as the off campus courses that we offer to experienced, practicing surveyors around the country. The topics are just as suited for my students in Florida as they are in New York, California, Mississippi or Hawaii, and that's saying a lot since the laws are different in all regions of the country. I have found that using this book has been very easy to present material useful to students taking the classes in any state while preparing for the FLS or LS exam, because it covers the topics to about the right amount of depth as the exam expects the examinee to comprehend. The only downfall of the book as I see it is that there are numerous wrong answers (in the back of the book)to the selected homework problems that answers are provided for. This can be frustrating at times as you can imagine. If you can find me, I'd be happy to forward a list of these erroneous answers, and the correct answers. This might be very useful for other educators. As per the rules of posting reviews, I can't put my email address on here. Bummer.

surveying : The foundations of surveying explained.

Surveying is the foundation of all of civilisations. The world would not be the same without the methods of surveying used by proffessionals.
This book was an essential refference during my study at university and is still used in my professional carrer.
From the first page you will be learning varrious ellements of surveying. The explination of fundumental elements of surveying methods and the changes to surveying caused by technology are explained at the start to give a foundation from which to work from. The different types of surveying is explained in good detail covering the concepts of bearings, angle measurement and lots of others. The covering of work related area's and problems are discussed and covered. This includes curves and roads, mapping and photogrammetry along with sections relating to area and volume determination.
There is numerous pictures, illustrations and diagrams used to show the equipment and show the concepts covered.
If I was starting my education in surveying or wishing to have a good refference then this should be reccomended as a text worth holding in your library.

Way too many errata for a recommendation

I have been using this book for six months in two different courses, and have nearly completed it.

While the content is fine, the number of errata in this book should not be tolerated.

On the book's web page, numerous errata are listed, but there are many more that have not been reported or compiled. While trying to study this book, the errata keep getting in the way of understanding the material, as there are wrong equations, bad tables, etc.

This book is in its tenth printing, and it is simply inexcusable that this many errata are allowed to remain in the book after so many printings.

Another reviewer (an educator who has the edition with answers in the back) mentioned the number of incorrect answers in the educators edition as well.

So, if you have a choice, look elsewhere for an elementary surveying text. The authors and/or publishers of this one obviously do not care enough to correct the numerous errors which confuse the student.

About the Author

George S. Morrison is a professor of early childhood education at the University of North Texas where he teaches child development and early childhood classes to undergraduate and graduate students. He is an experienced teacher and was a principal in the public schools.

 

Dr. Morrison's accomplishments include both a Distinguished Academic Service Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Outstanding Service and Teaching Awards from Florida International University. His books include Early Childhood Education Today, Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education and Teaching in America. Dr. Morrison has also written books about the education and development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; child development; the contemporary curriculum; and parent/family/community involvement.

 

Dr. Morrison is a popular author, speaker, and presenter. He is senior contributing editor for the Public School Montessorian. His research and presentations focus on the globalization of early childhood education, the influence of contemporary educational reforms on reeducation, and the application of best practices to early childhood education. Dr. Morrison also lectures and gives keynote addrsss on topics of early childhood education in Thailand, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and the Phillipines.

Second Best Intro Early Childhood Text For Teachers

After Jo Ann Brewer's superb INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION textbook, I would get this resource to keep me up-to-date on the foundational knowledge that stands as essential for early childhood professionals. Even though it lacks a chapter exclusively devoted to the all-important role of play in early childhood education, the absence of such a discussion leaves the learner with a more neutral reference point from which to decide his position on whether or not to align with a play-based curricular philosophy

Morrison presents a starkly realistic and contemporary overview of the field with an outstandingly streamlined overview of Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development (where he keeps a keen and faithful eye on expressing the ideas from Piaget/Inhelder's THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE CHILD).

After getting the Brewer text and Morrison, you should need no other book of this type. Please try Feeney, Christensen, & Moravcik's WHO AM I IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN if you need one more excellent text.

Actually enjoyed reading this for class

I am an Interdisciplinary Studies, Education, Major currently and I was required to purchase this book. I bought it off of Amazon which was a great price and got here in a timely manner. I am 20 years old, and I really can say I actually enjoyed reading this textbook. I didn't find it a hard read like many other textbooks. It had a lot of great information, from the various people who contributed to Education, to the Theories, helpful tips and hints, and just a bunch of great stuff that was worth taking notes on. I really would have liked to keep this, but because I am a college student my campus was buying back the book and I needed the money! I highlighted all over the place in this book and took notes from every single chapter. Throught the textbook there are personal stories as well as "Technology Tie-Ins" that gives you tips on how to become up to date with the technology of today and how you can integrate that into your classroom. Some of the words they marked as vocabulary I found to be common sense, but other than that the vocabulary was great. It is neatly displayed in the outside margins on the pages which I liked very much so I could actually read the definition in the chapter and didn't have to go search for it in the back of the book. The print size was nice, didn't find it hard to read. It was neatly put together, just a great textbook I think. Any Early Childhood teacher or teacher in training should get this book! It was very informative and had lots of great tips on things to do in the classroom and how to include parents, the community, and your students. I also liked how it said that the focus in school is a lot on the standardized tests (which I don't agree on) but that if you are a great teacher, you will FIND ways to make learning fun and also relevant!

IntroductionThere once was a man from Wales, Whose performance his boss mostly hails, One day he got canned, For lack of demand, His supply far outnumbered his sales.

When I was growing up in Boston in the 1950s, we had one telephone, one car, one television, and one turntable for playing LPs and 45s. The turntable and TV were actually both built into a large piece of dark mahogany furniture complete with hidden speakers—what must have been the home entertainment center of its day.

A half-century later, my own household has three cars, five telephones (not including three cell phones), three televisions, and eight different types of devices in which we can play our music CDs. We are oversized, over-entertained, over-informed, and definitely over-consumed. We have more than we need, more than we could ever consume, yet the call to arms from economists, business leaders, and government officials alike is "Grow, grow, grow."

We can't buy any more consumer electronic devices, we can't eat any more food, we can't drive more than one car at a time, or talk on more than one phone at a time, or watch more than one movie at a time. We are not broadband consumers. We can't expand our capacity for hamburgers, toothpaste, or shampoo, and there is no economic stimulus that will cause us to change our consumption habits for the long term.

The signs of saturation are all around us, but we prefer to characterize them as soft spots, or temporary periods during which corporations work off inventories. But it's more than that. Consider these statistics:

There are 15 million vacant homes in the United States—enough to house every family in Australia.

There are 31 million more registered vehicles than licensed drivers in the United States—enough to provide every man, woman, and child in Canada with his or her own car.

There are more than 310 million personal telephone numbers (residential and cellular) in the United States, not including business numbers—one for every man, woman, and child in both the United States and Australia.

We have more TVs than people to watch them, more telephones than people to talk on them, more homes than families to live in them, and more cars than people to drive them. We can buy a hammer and nails, rent a DVD, or buy a pound of ground beef at four different locations within five miles of our homes. For the first time in history, the law of demand and supply is being put to the test: Have we pushed consumption to the edge of saturation, unable to stimulate new demand at any price?

Why the sudden lack of demand and fear of deflation? Because over the last 100 years we have nearly exhausted the three variables of consumption:

Number of consumers. Not only has the world's population quadrupled since 1900, the number of people participating in each category of product has greatly expanded over the last 100 years. The emergence of the middle class in developed countries gave rise to hundreds of millions who entered product categories for the first time in the 20th century. Today, there's barely a product category in which the rich and poor don't participate as consumers together.

Number of categories. The number of categories of products and variations of products has greatly expanded since 1900. Consider, for example, the vast number of options for shampoo or toothpaste at your local supermarket.

Frequency and volume. The amount of product consumed both in terms of frequency and volume has greatly expanded since 1900. The developed world rationed and sacrificed for the first 50 years of the 20th century. Since 1950, we have been on a consumption binge that borders on gluttonous. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Consumer debt continues to grow while the number of personal bankruptcies is at record levels, approaching 2 million additional families or individuals a year.

While pushing the edge of the consumption envelope over the past 100 years, we did all that we could to continually establish new sales records. First, we expanded domestically and used all of the creativity and media buying power of Madison Avenue to reach and influence anyone with a television set. Then we moved the show on the road, expanding distribution to international markets. Then we increased the number of products and line extensions to satisfy every desire and every taste: Italian salad dressing, lite Italian salad dressing, zesty Italian salad dressing, lite zesty Italian salad dressing. Somewhere along the road to progress while we were building a better life for our children and ourselves, we killed the golden goose.

We killed demand by using our drive, ambition, and creativity to convince more consumers in more categories to consume more products more often and in larger quantities than ever before. Our relentless push for more has caused us to reach a destination that few, over the past 300 years, thought possible: saturation.

So now what? What lies ahead for corporations, their employees, and their shareowners? Will we continue to grow? Probably. But will we continue to grow at a rate to which we have become accustomed? Probably not. And therein lies the rub. We have all been operating in a new economic reality for quite some time now; we just didn't know it. We must start thinking about the next 12 years, not just the next 12 months, and how we intend to manage maturing corporations in maturing industries that provide little momentum to a maturing economy.

How does a 45-year-old CEO, for example, manage a low-to-no-growth corporation in the 21st century? Is it possible to fuel earnings growth for two decades largely by cutting costs? Campbell's Soup's strategy was to reduce its dividend to fund a retooling of its soup-making process. Will that strategy help them sell more cans of soup? Can any strategy help the airline industry sell more seats? Can any strategy help the auto industry sell more cars and trucks? Can any strategy help McDonald's sell more Big Macs? For the first time ever, the answer to these questions might simply be "no."

This is the new economic reality—a reality that requires businesses to consider the possibility of selling a relatively fixed number of units each year for the foreseeable future and without a whole lot of pricing power. In the new economic reality, the rate of growth of corporations—any corporation—trends UP for just one period of its life. After that UP trend— which often takes decades—the corporation's rate of growth trends DOWN. UP once and DOWN once—not multiple times as suggested by those whose Holy Grail is the short-term business cycle. The long-term business cycle—one that views results over decades instead of years or quarters—does not follow an "S-shaped" pattern. It follows an inverted or upsidedown "V."

Like the townspeople watching the naked emperor at the front of the ceremonial parade, few have had the courage to tell it like it is for fear of appearing stupid or incompetent, as the fairy tale goes. However, that doesn't mean avoiding the issue will make it go away.

In many ways we are the spoiled brats of capitalism, always expecting more. When we don't get more, we throw a temper tantrum. We also tend to not take serious the undeniable signs that suggest big fundamental economic problems are on the horizon. We have not yet realized the seriousness of the problem. On a recent front page of USA Today, the lead story trumpeted the approval of $87.5 billion to help rebuild Iraq. Directly under that story was an article announcing that the U.S. Department of the Treasury was redesigning the U.S. nickel. Do we have any clue as to how stupid that looks, and how much it shows that we are not yet serious about a fundamentally troubled economy?

The emperor is naked, and has been for years. It's now time to stop whining about it and accept the fact that what we have is a bearish economy for the foreseeable future. An economy that might require us to rethink our very purpose and, to redefine precisely what it is we mean when we say we are making progress.

A Remarkable Piece of Work

This book is not only a wonderful read and an impressive history of business during the second half of the 20th century, but it presents the most logical understanding as to why corporations, industries - the entire economy - is having such a difficult time growing. The irony that Osenton points out is that we are victims of our own success - pushing for more and more consumption - and getting it! - only to begin to approach levels of saturation. He points out that there are currently more than 32 million more registered vehicles in the United States than there are licensed drivers! Talk about surplus. For the first time ever, someone has explained WHY - beyond the simple explanation of greed - that corporations are cooking their books in order to make the numbers. It's because their respective top lines are lifeless, and they have squeezed every penny, every productivity gain they could out of the corporation. Death of Demand helped me completely understand why employees are paying for earnings growth with their jobs - jobs that are either being cut altogether or sent overseas. What a spectacular analysis of our current economic condition. Bravo!

The best business book I have read since Peter's "In Search of Excellence" two deacdes ago.
