Same textbook as pictured. Can't beat the price. Content is identical to the 5th and 6th editions of the same book. Only difference is the actual numbers in the problems which isn't a big deal especially since most homework is all done online anyway now. If y oure taking an econ class using the MyEconLab, don't waste your money on the marked up new versions of the same textbook.

This book is intended for an advanced undergraduate course in dynamical systems or nonlinear ordinary differential equations. There are portions that could be beneficially used for introductory master level courses. The goal is a treatment that gives examples and methods of calculation, at the same time introducing the mathematical concepts involved. Depending on the selection of material covered, an instructor could teach a course from this book that is either strictly an introduction into the concepts, that covers both the concepts on applications, or that is a more theoretically mathematical introduction to dynamical systems. Further elaboration of the variety of uses is presented in the subsequent discussion of the organization of the book.

The assumption is that the student has taken courses on calculus covering both single variable and multivariables, a course on linear algebra, and an introductory course on differential equations. From the multivariable calculus, the material on partial derivatives is used extensively, and in a few places multiple integrals and surface integrals are used. (See Appendix A.) Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are the main concepts used from linear algebra, but further topics are listed in Appendix C. The material from the standard introductory course on differential equations is used only in part one; we assume that students can solve first-order equations by separation of variables, and that they know the form of solutions from second order scalar equations. Students who have taken a introductory course on differential equations are usually familiar with linear systems with constant coefficients (at least the real-eigenvalue case), but this material is repeated in Chapter 2, where we also introduce the reader to the phase portrait. Students have taken the course covering part one on differential equations without this introductory course on differential equations; they have been able to understand the new material where they have been willing to do the extra work in a few areas that is required to fill in the missing background. Finally, we have not assumed that the student has a course on real analysis or advanced calculus. However, it is convenient to use some of the terminology from such a course, so we include an appendix with terminology on continuity and topology.

Organization

This book presents an introduction to the concepts of dynamical systems. It is divided into two parts, which can be treated in either order: The first part treats various aspects of systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and the second part treats those aspects dealing with iteration of a function. Each separate part can be used for a one-quarter course, a one-semester course, a two-quarter course, or possibly even a year course. At Northwestern University, we have courses that spend one-quarter on the first part and two-quarters on the second part. In a one quarter course on differential equations, it is difficult to cover the material on chaotic attractors, even skipping many of the applications and proofs at the end of the chapters. A semester course on differential equations could also cover selected topics on iteration of functions from chapters nine through eleven. In the course on discrete dynamical systems from part two, we cover most of the material on iteration of one dimensional functions (chapters nine through eleven) in one quarter. The material on iteration of higher dimensional functions (chapters twelve through thirteen) certainly depends on the one dimensional material, but a one semester course could mix in some of the higher dimensional examples with the treatment of/chapters nine through eleven. Finally, chapter fourteen on fractals can be treated after a number of the earlier chapters. Fractal dimensions could be integrated into the material on chaotic attractors at the end of a course on differential equations. The material on fractal dimensions or iterative function systems could be treated with a course on iteration of one dimensional functions.

The main concepts are presented in the first sections of each chapters. These sections are followed by a section that presents some applications and then by a section that contains proofs of the more difficult results and more theoretical material. The division of material between these types of sections is somewhat arbitrary. The material on competitive populations and predator-prey systems is contained in one of the beginning sections of the chapters in which these topics are covered, rather than in the applications at the end of the chapters, because these topics serve to develop the main techniques presented. Also, some proofs are contained in the main sections when they are more computational and serve to make the concepts clearer. Longer and more technical proofs and further theoretical discussion are presented separately at the end of the chapter.

A course that covers the material from the primary sections, without covering the sections at the end of the chapter on applications and more theoretical material, results in a course on the concepts of dynamical systems with some motivation from applications.

The applications provide motivation and illustrate the usefulness of the concepts. None of the material from the sections on applications is necessary for treating the main sections of later chapters. Treating more of this material would result in a more applied emphasis.

Separating the harder proofs, allows the instructor to determine the level of theory of the course taught using this book as the text. A more theoretic course could consider most of the proofs at the end of the chapters.

Computer Programs

The book does not explicitly cover aspects of computer programming. However, a few selected problems require computer simulations to produce phase portraits of differential equations or to iterate functions. Sample Maple worksheets, which the students can modify to help with some of the more computational problems, will be available on the webpage,

There are several books available that treat dynamical systems in the context of Maple or Mathematica: two such books are 58 by M. Kulenovic and 70 by S. Lynch. The book 85 by J. Polking and D. Arnold discusses using Matlab to solve differential equations using packages available at http://math.rice.edu/~dfield. The book 80 by H. Nusse and J. Yorke comes with its own specialized dynamical systems package.

If your program uses this book, quit your program

Frankly, I think my review title is a perfect summary. We are using this in my dynamical systems class at Portland State and it is continually amusing to me that my professor on a daily basis says something along the lines of: "...well, I don't really know why he chose to approach it that way." Meaning that the construction of the material in this book is terrible.

Moreover, one cannot be heartened perusing the long list of errata at the books website which, too, is puzzling since the edition (softcover) I received appears to be more recent than the list and to have been made on an office copying machine.

Avoid this book. Terrible explanations. Terrible layout. Terrible typesetting.

Terrible Text Book

If you would like to study Dynamical Systems, then it would behoove you to avoid this text at all costs. It assumes only calculus, linear algebra and some differential equations, but then goes off on wild tangents - never explaining any of the steps in the examples and using the most cumbersome language possible for its Theorems and definitions. Easily one of the worst textbooks I have ever used.

The WORST

This was perhaps the most poorly written textbook I've ever encountered. Theorems weren't defined completely or clearly. There were problems whose solution methods could in no way be extrapolated from the text alone; I had to use several other books. I recommend not buying this book unless it's required for a class. I'm sure there are many better references or self-teaching books out there.

Difficult and Too Concise

I've never had such a hard time in a math class. I realized quickly that linear algebra is completely different from the mechanical things I've been learning. This subject is very different and very abstract. I knew I really had to STUDY and not just read this book.
Considering all of this, when I picked this book up, I was apprenhensive from the start. Whenever I see a thin book assigned for a subject that's entirely unfamiliar to students, I know it's going to be a very concise book without many examples and detailed explanations.
The few people who have given this book rave reviews sound like instructors. If you are an instructor reading this review, please keep one thing in mind: textbooks are written for students, not you. What difference does it make if you think it's great but your students can't understand the most basic concepts, which was happening in my class? Yes, this book will make you think--think for hours on such basic concepts as what's the difference between a rotation and reflection. One more example of a linear transformation would've made all the difference in the world. The very first exercises will often leave most students saying, huh? Thinking is great but if you have to search the web and buy other books to get more information, that book is worthless.
I'm a computer science major and there are books I really think are well-written but I would never recommend them to someone who's never touched the subject. I believe if most of the students don't like it, there's something wrong with the book (many of my classmates complained about this book as well). If you are a math major or someone with a PhD, of course, a concise and clean explanation is great. But for students who've never had it, it's a nightmare. It's a situation I see too often: the textbooks that are assigned usually get the worst reviews yet they keep getting assigned again and again. This is especially true in science and math courses.

Professor hates book

This is the first semester my college has used this book and it will most likely be its last. Everyday, my professor says how unhappy he is with this book because they present information in an odd sequence. For instance, we learned about subspaces before knowing what an actual space is. This makes the book very confusing and hard to follow. Just a warning: almost every example (not problem) in this book is done in symbols which is sometimes hard to follow. Overall, I would not buy this book

A must have for introductory econometrics

Using Econometrics: A Practical Guide, is an excellent text for an introductory course in econometrics. I commend the the author for using a logical and systematic manner regarding the structure of the book. The beginning chapters emphasize regression analysis and hypothesis testing. The middle chapters relax each of the classical assumptions regarding OLS analysis, therefore confronting nonlinear functional form, autocorrelation, multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, and so on. Finally, the last chapters of the book encompass further topics in econometric analysis, such as forecasting, simultaneous equations, dependent binary variables, etc.
I recommend this book to those who understand university-level algebra and statistical concepts such as probability theory, hypothesis testing, central limit theorem, etc. However, calculus based probability theory is not at all a prerequisite for this text.

The best text to have for USING econometrics...

This text probably is not necessary for those with a heavy background in mathmatical econometrics.... but is an overwhelmingly useful tool for students are new to the field of econometric analysis be it used in economics, political statistics, sociology, or other fields. It can provide simple answers to the (normal) kinds of simple questions that pop up.... and basic explanations for terminology, etc. It explains additions to typical OLS regression clearly and aptly.
I would recommend this text as a must-buy for anyone NOT looking for hard-core theoretical math but only for something useful....

Good Starting Point for Econometrics

In 2000, I wrote a review of this text. I still stand by my assertion that this is an excellent introduction to econometrics. One thing that I failed to mention in my 2000 review is that this book is good for people who have never seen econometrics in their life. Furthermore, don't expect to see proofs, theorems, etc. This book does not emphasize mathematics.
For a good introductory book that does incorporate calculus, some proofs, etc., get Gujarati's "Basic Econometrics" (not to be confused with Gujarati's "Essentials of Econometrics"). If you're only going to have one introductory book, and you want a mathematical treatment, get Gujarati. If you want an introductory book without a mathematical treatment, get Studenmund.

If you are new to e-marketing, great book to start....

I had this book as part of my Master's Digital Marketing course at coloradotech.edu

Normally, these types of books are not very useful to me, as I've been on the web for around 8 years an am more familiar with how it works. I remember back when submitting a site to Yahoo was free. Then again, it took FOREVER to get listed.

Anyway, for those new to banner ads, paid listings, website promotion, affiliate programs, etc., this book may be for you.

For those that are already familiar with the objectives of conventional marketing, and the web, you may find a lot of the material more 'common sensical'.

I didn't give it 5 stars, because there are other books out there that describe e-marketing on a much broader scale, such as the book I had for my previous class: Electronic Commerce, A managerial perspective 2004.

Look elsewhere

If this book is required for your class, PLEASE buy a different book. This book offers little to no explanation of key topics, is very poorly written, and is hard to follow. In many cases, you will be better off simply reading Wikipedia. If you go to a school that requires this book, I would advise you to write angry letters to the people who decided to use it until they submit to your whim. By choosing this book, they have ruined an entire semester of class for you. How does that make you feel?

Mediocre at Best -- Not for Self Study

This book is used for first and second year computing science and engineering courses at Simon Fraser University (BC). Logic and Computer design fundamentals can be used as a decent supplement to a course, however, it would be nigh on impossible to learn the material without a decent teacher helping you along. I have had the privelage of an excellent prof in the courses using this book and that is necessary. Logic and computer design fundamentals is best used as either a supplementary reference for some diagrams or better, not at all.
Material Covered:
Digital Computers and Information --> Introducton to number systems, codes, etc... basic and unclear for a beginning student
Combinational Logic Circuits --> This is where an intro to logic book has to shine however for many of the persons that I know, they were unable to decipher how to sketch a Karnaugh map from this book. Were it not for the prof, the classes would be worthless.

Because it's used in my school...

The only reason I would purchase this because is because it was a required book in my school. And boy, this is some really rough reading. Let me generalize, being a techinical book and a "logic" one the authors' attempt to convey a message so garbled and mismanaged it is extermely mind numbing to read. For example, here's an excerpt from the book, "We also, however, choose to treat it first so that we can clearly justify, in terms of hardware cost, that which otherwise appears bizarre and often is accepted on faith, namely, the use of complement representations in arithmetic."
Ok that wasn't so bad right? Well think about reading a few pages. Bored yet? I feel like I'm in a middle of a sunday church service and the priest is repetiously rephrasing a sentence over, and over, and over with no meaning intended.
I belive these authors should stick to what they do best. Design circuits. They fail to explain things throughly without an emphasis WHY. Also there is too much technical garble mixed up with sentences which really should be split into paragraphs. Another thing is a hefty price tag that comes with this book.
I also forgot to mention the software. The software is designed by xilinx. I've not been able to get it to run on either my laptop, or my home pc. During lab hours at my school the schematic editor has been nothing but buggy. The software would at times erase my circuits, files wont save, etc. I find myself rewriting circuits 5 to 6 times just to rid of bugs that just seem to appear. If this book wasn't used in my classroom I'd recommend avioding it. NOt only is this book well over 100 dollars new and/or used the authors do a terrible job conveying technical data into a well formed, understandable structure we REAL humans can understand.
