This book, written as a text for accounting/business students, provides an excellent overview of accounting standards around the world. Rather than providing a detailed listing of accounting standards for each country (best left for reference texts and online, easily updatable sources) the authors focus on the key features of accounting standards, disclosures and harmonization efforts worldwide.
This book provides an excellent, basic primer in international accounting. It is easily read by anyone with a basic understanding of business and finance and/or accounting. The authors provide numerous examples of international financial reporting, taken from actual financial statements and annual reports.

Not suitable for an online course

Maybe I am not as smart as the reviewer from Texas who gave this book five stars. I profoundly disliked this textbook. At best it is a mediocre piece of work.

Here are my gripes:

a) The authors do not concentrate on the essential. Particularly painful for me were chapters 3 and 4. There were so many long narratives that touched on insignificant things. See page 132: What changed in accounting when Mexico declared independence from Spain? Instead, information of relevance is missing. For example the accounting for pension liabilities in other countries should have been examined closer.

b) Explanations are complicated and long.

c) One is unnecessarily burdened with references to what happened in the past. Who cares what regulation was passed in 1965 when it is no longer in effect today. Such references may be appropriate for a research paper, but not for a textbook. When we get out in the real world, it will be more important to know what rules are in effect at this point.

Overall, it was a drag studying from this book week by week. Isn't there anything better out there on international accounting?

Useful but over priced

A useful book that provides a good summary comparing differing Accounting Standards and approaches between countries. However, it is not worth the price. It is supposedly written for later year undergraduate and masters accounting students. It is more suitable for general second year accounting students. Plus, as I am working with a multinational European bank in Japan, the book is, rapidly becoming, out of date. There is none of the simply but incisive commentary which can be found in other books about the differences and outcomes of general accounting principals drawn from different countries.

About the Author

His research interests include computational psycholinguistics, humanities computing, digital and linguistic forensics, and computer security. This book is an outgrowth of his teaching experiences at Duquesne.

Very enjoyable

Probably the best tutorial on the JVM I have read so far.
If you need to know JVM assembly I will highly recommend this book.

For generic computer organization there are better options thou...not much about operating systems, north/south bridging, etc.
Descriptions of many different CPUs and microprocessors. A fine piece of work.

I'm giving this book five stars, because I think that anyone who is interested in an introductory understanding of Assembly-level architecture should read it. It's easy to read, informative, and substantive; definitely worth the money.

MEDIOCRE TO GOOD BOOK, BUT AT GOOD PRICE: DO NOT BUY IT NEW!

Mr. Juola has written a good book that is nice & small (a big plus!) as it was easy to carry around. I have many qualms about the book, even though it is an excellent little book. The qualms are that many of the explanations could be way much better & some areas of the book (a minority) are not written well where as other areas are written brilliantly. He definitely could edit his own book so that it reads much better & it would be brilliant. As of this time it is only good in certain areas, but for the MOST PART is an good little book. An example of the confusion in his book would be his explanation on Jasmin code on how to put in text items. He had a bunch of confusing code which did not work right when tried (either due to confusion or just wrong code), but upon going online a small snippet of code was all it needed & solved the rest of my Jasmin needs, but this caused a lot of headaches trying zillions of different things. His assembly language explanations have a few grey areas as well as for example how he describes offsets for example. For the price it was a good buy as new they wanted some outrageous amount for a new one that is small & not a fantastically written book. If you need this for a class, do not buy new as the book is not worth the exhorbitant price, instead buy it here. The book arrived on time & in good shape.

Planet Earth was first photographed from space more than 30 years ago by the astronauts of the Apollo mission. Since then a variety of satellites have given us supernatural eyes in space. With sophisticated sensors we can "see" through clouds, observe the surface features on the ocean floor, and selectively image temperature, water vapor, ocean currents, and even patterns of ancient river systems now buried beneath the sand of the Sahara Desert. New technology has permitted us to penetrate deep into the interior of our planet and X ray its internal structure. We can now "see" hot material in the interior moving in huge convection cells, creating ocean basins, volcanic islands, and mountain systems.

With this era of enlightenment comes an increased awareness of how our planet is continually changing and a fresh awareness of how fragile it is. Earth is a finite sphere with limited resources, so it is impossible for the population to grow indefinitely. We may find more oil, gas, and coal by improved detection methods, yet nature requires more than a million years to concentrate the oil now consumed in only one year. We have created nuclear waste, yet are unsure how to dispose of it safely. What can we do about the fact that rivers today transport more agricultural and industrial waste than natural sediment? Is greenhouse heating real? The answers to these questions can be found only if we understand Earth's dynamic systems with their many interdependent and interconnected components.

There are two major pathways for the flow of energy and matter on the planet: (1) the hydrologic system—the circulation of water over Earth's surface and through its atmosphere powered by energy from the Sun, and (2) the tectonic system—the movement of material powered by heat from Earth's interior. Everything discussed in this book is related to these unifying themes.

The tenth edition of Earth's Dynamic Systems introduces these systems and will help students to understand and participate in the solutions to some of these problems. It is written for students taking their first college course in physical geology at both two- and four-year schools.

This book was significantly revised to make it a more effective learning tool.

  • We have reinforced the themes of the book by dividing it into four parts. In Part I, we discuss Earth's materials and how they are created by geologic systems. In Part II, we discuss the hydrologic system by examining subsystems chapter by chapter. Plate tectonics is the theme of Part IV, with separate chapters on divergent, transform, and convergent boundaries, as well as mantle plumes—the subsystems of the tectonic system. In Part IV, we look back and apply the principles learned to see how Earth's resources formed and just how different our home in space is when compared with other planets. The focus on the hydrologic and tectonic systems is captured in the cover illustrations, which symbolize the energy sources—heat from the Sun and heat from Earth's interior—that drive our dynamic planet.
  • Our major new thrust is the introduction of a series of essays that illustrate the scientific method. We call these summary messages Geologic, as we attempt to show the logic behind using simple observations to come to important conclusions about the way Earth works. We have designed new illustrations to take students from "seeing" to "understanding."
  • The State of the Art sections have been retained. We attempt to distill the important techniques used in modern geology into a few words and couple them with some of the most spectacular and informative images available today. In these short essays, we show how geologists come to understand the world around us, emphasizing not just "what we know" but "how we know" it as well.
  • We strive to present a new perspective in visualizing geology by using panoramic photographs of the landscape. Panoramic photographs begin each chapter and provide the student with a visual summary of the theme of the chapter.
  • All chapters were updated and checked for accuracy. Special attention was focused on improving the illustrations so that the student can more fully experience the excitement and satisfaction of visualizing and understanding geology. We have traveled over much of North America and many other parts of the world—including Brazil, Antarctica, Iceland, Mexico, China, Tibet, Oman—to take photographs specifically for this book. Photographs not otherwise credited were taken by W Kenneth Hamblin.
  • An important element in this edition is the use of new digital topographic maps. The recent release of new data on seafloor and continental topography by defense and other governmental agencies has opened a new window through which we can see the continents and seafloor in a more accurate and detailed fashion than ever before. These colored, shaded relief maps are a visual and intellectual feast for those who carefully study them.
  • The instructor support package has been upgraded since the last edition. In addition to the slides and transparencies to support your lectures, you'll also have electronic access to all the illustrations, most of the photographs from the text, and dozens of additional photographs and video clips via an Instructors Resource CD-ROM.
  • To the Student How to Use This Book

    One of the most difficult problems you face in beginning a course in a new subject is to identify fundamental facts and concepts and separate them from supportive material. This problem is often expressed by the question, What do I need to learn? We have attempted to overcome this problem by presenting the material in each chapter in a manner that will help you recognize immediately the essential concepts.

    Outline of Major Concepts. To help you focus on the key points, we have identified them at the beginning of each chapter under the title of "Major Concepts."

    Thesis Statements. A brief statement of the main idea of each section is in a colored box.

    Guiding Questions. Experience has shown that the most successful students are those who read with a specific purpose-those who read to answer a question. Consequently, we have developed guiding questions that are presented in the margins next to the appropriate text material. The questions are intended to guide you in your study, stimulate your curiosity, and help focus attention on important concepts.

    Illustrations. You will find that careful study of the figures and captions is one of the most useful methods of reviewing the content of the chapter.

    Key Terms. Important terms are printed in bold type. In the Key Terms section at the end of each chapter, the terms are listed alphabetically, with the number of the page on which each appears. These terms are also defined in the glossary at the end of the book.

    Review Questions. These discussion questions are intended to reinforce the main concepts and stimulate further investigation by pointing out some of the intriguing questions on which scientists are working.

    Illustrated Glossary. At the end of the book there is an illustrated glossary defining approximately 800 important geologic terms. Many of the terms are accompanied by an illustration that will help in visualizing the definition and meaning of the term. This glossary, if propeily used, can be a convenient and significant aid in learning the basic vocabulary of geology.

    Best geology book ever!

    I own a copy of the fifth edition of this book. I am a science junkie and enjoy reading science text books. I find geology particularly interesting and over the years I have read dozens and dozens of geology textbooks. Earth's Dynamic Systems is by far the best I have ever read. If I was ever to teach a geology class, this is the book I would use. The line of thinking is so clear and logical in this book it is a joy to read. The illustrations are among the best I have ever seen and I have just the old the 5th ed. Generally when there are a number of good books on a given subject, they are all pretty much the same in quality. But that is not the case here, this book is head and shoulders above all other geology books. The edition I have also came with a lab manual that I also highly recommend. A wonderful set of books I am proud to own. If you are looking for a definitive single book that best covers all of geology, this is it. In this one book is more geology than in several other books put together. If you thoroughly read this book, you will know geology better than most geologists, it really is that good.

    Great Geology Book

    The author of this book was approached a few years ago by the publisher to make a new edition of the book. But rather than making another unneeded edition to bring the publisher more profits the author decided to make the entire book available online. You can find this book for free by googling the title. I liked it enough that I bought a cheap hard copy. Overall this is an excellent book on geology and is filled with lots of information, illustrations, and explanations. It has a good glossary, and index which makes looking up topics quick and easy.

    Update: It looks like the original author Dr. Hamblin has since passed away and this book is now once again being published under the new name Dynamic Earth. Unfortunately, this also means that the free website which Dr. Hamblin had setup is no longer available. However, I am glad to see this book continue to be published since it is an excellent of not the best introduction to college level geology.

    If you want a basic book that will help you understand geology you need this book. the book can fit anyone from age 7 to 70 (while you still see). every kid can understand basic geology concepts by looking at the pictures and reading the wothy text. even if you are a geologist like me you still enjoy wonderful pictures and great explanations. the glossary and the index help you find and understand hard words and terms

    PREFACE ABOUT THIS BOOK

    Intermediate Algebra: A Graphing Approach, Second Edition was written to provide a solid foundation in algebra as well as to develop students' problem-solving skills. Specific care has been taken to ensure that students have the most up-to-date and relevant text preparation for their next mathematics course, as well as to help students succeed in nonmathematical courses that require a grasp of algebraic fundamentals. We have tried to achieve this by writing a user-friendly text that is keyed to objectives and contains many worked-out examples. The basic concepts of graphs and functions are introduced early, and problem-solving techniques, real-life and real-data applications, data interpretation, mental mathematics, number sense, critical thinking, decision making, and geometric concepts are emphasized and integrated throughout the book. This text makes reference to the use of graphing technology to help students better understand important mathematical connections.

    The many factors that contributed to the success of the first edition have been retained. In preparing this edition, we considered the comments and suggestions of colleagues throughout the country, students, and users of the prior edition. The AMATYC Crossroads in Mathematics: Standards for Introductory College Mathematics before Calculus and the MAA and NCTM standards (plus Addenda), together with advances in technology, also influenced the writing of this text.

Throughout the series, pedagogical features are designed to develop student proficiency in algebra and problem solving and to prepare students for future courses. KEY PEDAGOGICAL FEATURES IN THE THIRD EDITION

    Readability and Connections. We have tried to make the writing style as clear as possible while still retaining the mathematical integrity of the content. When a new topic is presented, an effort has been made to relate the new ideas to those that students may already know. Constant reinforcement and connections within problem-solving strategies, data interpretation, geometry, patterns, graphs, and situations from everyday life can help students gradually master both new and old information.

    Problem Solving Process. This is formally introduced in Chapter 1 with a new four-step process that is integrated throughout the text. The four steps are Understand, Translate, Solve, and Interpret. The repeated use of these steps throughout the text in a variety of examples shows their wide applicability. Reinforcing the steps can increase students' confidence in beginning problems. When solving problems, students are encouraged to use technology when applicable during this problem-solving process and/or when checking a solution. For instance, with technology, a graph can be generated quickly and accurately in order to enhance the problem-solving process.

    Applications and Connections. Every effort was made to include as many accessible, interesting, and relevant real-life applications as possible throughout the text in both worked-out examples and exercise sets. The applications strengthen students' understanding of mathematics in the real world and help to motivate them. They show connections to a wide range of fields including agriculture, allied health, art, astronomy, automotive ownership, aviation, biology, business, chemistry, communication, computer technology, construction, consumer affairs, demographics, earth science, education, entertainment, environmental issues, finance and economics, food service, geography, government, history, hobbies, labor and career issues, life science, medicine, music, nutrition, physics, political science, population, recreation, sports, technology, transportation, travel, weather, and important related mathematical areas such as geometry and statistics. (See the Index of Applications on page xxi.) Many of the applications are based on recent and interesting real-life data. For instance, see Section 2.4, exercise 76, Section 4.3, exercise 44 , or Section 5.3 exercise 85, for a variety of ways real data is used. Sources for data include newspapers, magazines, government publications, publicly held companies, special interest groups, research organizations, and reference books. Opportunities for obtaining your own real data with and without using the internet are also included.

    Discover the Concept. These explorations, integrated appropriately throughout the text, are often for use with graphing calculators or computer graphing utilities. They promote student involvement and interaction with the text as students are reading. This feature helps students recognize patterns or discover a concept on their own immediately before the concept is formally introduced.

    Helpful Hints. Helpful Hints, formerly Reminders, contain practical advice on applying mathematical concepts. These are found throughout the text and strategically placed where students are most likely to need immediate reinforcement. They are highlighted in a box for quick reference and, as appropriate, an indicator line is used to precisely identify the particular part of a problem or concept being discussed. For instance, see pages 129 and 348.

    Technology Note. Generally found in the margin, technology notes contain specific suggestions for problem solving with technology. They also contain notes on extra features students might find available on their graphing utilities.

    Visual Reinforcement of Concepts. The text contains numerous graphics, models, and illustrations to visually clarify and reinforce concepts. These include new and updated bar graphs and circle graphs in two and three dimensions, line graphs, calculator screens, application illustrations, photographs, and geometric figures. There are now approximately 1,000 figures.

    Real World Chapter Openers. The new two-page chapter opener focuses on how math is used in a specific career, provides links to the World Wide Web, and references a "Spotlight on Decision Making" feature within the chapter for further exploration of the career and the relevance of algebra. For example, look at the opener for Chapter 4. The opening pages also contain a list of section titles and an introduction to the mathematics to be studied together with mathematical connections to previous chapters in the text.

    Student Resource Icons. At the beginning of each section, videotape, tutorial software CD ROM, Student Solutions Manual, and Study Guide icons are displayed. These icons help remind students that these learning aids are available should they choose to use them to review concepts and skills at their own pace. These items have direct correlation to the text and emphasize the text's methods of solution.

    Chapter Highlights. Found at the end of each chapter, the Chapter Highlights contain key definitions, concepts, and examples to help students understand and retain what they have learned.

    Chapter Project. This feature occurs at the end of each chapter, often serving as a chapter wrap-up. For individual or group completion, the mufti-part Chapter Project, usually hands-on or data based, allows students to problem solve, make interpretations, and to think and write about algebra.

    Functional Use of Color and New Design. Elements of this text are highlighted with color or design to make it easier for students to read and study.     Each text section ends with an exercise set, usually divided into two parts. Both parts contain graded exercises. The first part is carefully keyed to at least one worked example in the text. Once a student has gained confidence in a skill, the second part contains exercises not keyed to examples.

    Throughout the text exercises there is an emphasis on data and graphical interpretation via tables, charts, and graphs. The ability to interpret data and read and create a variety of types of graphs is developed gradually so students become comfortable with it. Similarly, throughout the text there is integration of geometric concepts, such as perimeter and area. Exercises and examples marked with a geometry icon have been identified for convenience.

    Each exercise set contains one or more of the following features.

    Spotlight on Decision Making. These unique new, specially designed applications help students develop their decision-making and problem-solving abilities, skills useful in mathematics and in life. Appropriately placed before an exercise set begins, students have an opportunity to immediately practice and reinforce basic algebraic concepts found in the accompanying section in relevant, accessible contexts. There is an emphasis on workplace or job-related career situations (such as the decisions of a Meteorologist in Section 2.1, a phychologist in Section 7.6, or a Webmaster in Section 9.4) as well as decision making in general (such as choosing a long-distance telephone plan in Section 4.3 or choosing an online service in Section 5.4 or deciding between two job offers in Section 11.1).

    Mental Mathematics. These problems are found at the beginning of many exercise sets. They are mental warm-ups that reinforce concepts found in the accompanying section and increase students' confidence before they tackle an exercise set. By relying on their own mental skills, students increase not only their confidence in themselves but also their number sense and estimation ability.

    Writing Exercises. These exercises now found in almost every exercise set are marked with a pencil icon. They require students to assimilate information and provide a written response to explain concepts or justify their thinking. Guidelines recommended by the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) and other professional groups recommend incorporating writing in mathematics courses to reinforce concepts. Writing opportunities also occur within features such as Spotlight on Decision Making and Chapter Projects.

    Data and Graphical Interpretation. Throughout the text there is an emphasis on data interpretation in exercises via tables, bar charts, line graphs, or circle graphs. The ability to interpret data and read and create a variety of graphs is developed gradually so students become comfortable with it.

    Review Exercises. These exercises occur in each exercise set (except for those in Chapter 1). These problems are keyed to earlier sections and review concepts learned earlier in the text that are needed in the next section or in the next chapter. These exercises show the links between earlier topics and later material.

    A Look Ahead. These exercises occur at the end of some exercise sets. This section contains examples and problems similar to those found in a subsequent algebra course. "A Look Ahead" is presented as a natural extension of the material and contains an example followed by advanced exercises.

    In addition to the approximately 5,000 exercises within sections, exercises may also be found in the Vocabulary Checks, Chapter Reviews, Chapter Tests, and Cumulative Reviews.

    Vocabulary Checks. Vocabulary checks, new to this edition, provide an opportunity for students to become more familiar with the use of mathematical terms as they strengthen their verbal skills.

    Chapter Review and Chapter Test. The end of each chapter contains a review of topics introduced in the chapter. The review problems are keyed to sections. The chapter test is not keyed to sections.

    Cumulative Review. Each chapter after the first contains a cumulative review of all chapters beginning with the first up through the chapter at hand. Each problem contained in the cumulative review is actually an earlier worked example in the text that is referenced in the back of the book along with the answer. Students who need to see a complete worked-out solution, with explanation, can do so by turning to the appropriate example in the text. KEY CONTENT FEATURES IN THE SECOND EDITION

    Overview. This new edition retains many of the factors that have contributed to its success. Even so, every section of the text was carefully re-examined. Throughout the new edition you will find numerous new applications, examples, and many real-life applications and exercises. For example, look at Sections 2.4, 2.6, or 8.2. Some sections have internal re-organization to better clarify and enhance the presentation.

    Increased Integration of Geometry Concepts. In addition to the traditional topics in algebra courses, this text contains a strong emphasis on problem solving, and geometric concepts are integrated throughout. The geometry concepts presented are those most important to a student's understanding of algebra, and I have included many applications and exercises devoted to this topic. These are marked with the geometry icon. Also, geometric figures, a review of angles, lines, and special triangles, are covered in the appendices. The inside back cover provides a quick reference of geometric formulas.

    Real Numbers and Algebraic Expressions. Chapter 1 now begins with Tips for Success in Mathematics (Section 1.0). Chapter 1 has been streamlined and refreshed for greater efficiency and relevance. New applications and real data enhance the chapter.

    Early and Intuitive Introduction to Graphs and Functions. As bar and line graphs are gradually introduced in Chapter 1, an emphasis is placed on the notion of paired data. This leads naturally to the concepts of ordered pair and the rectangular coordinate system introduced in Chapter 2. This edition offers more real data and conceptual type applications and further strengthens the introduction to slope.

    Once students are comfortable with graphing equations, functions are introduced in Chapter 2. The concept of function is illustrated in numerous ways to ensure student understanding: by listing ordered pairs of data, showing rectangular coordinate system graphs, visually representing set correspondences, and including numerous real-data and conceptual examples. The importance of a function is continuously reinforced by not treating it as a single, stand-alone topic but by constantly integrating functions in appropriate sections of this text.

    Increased Attention to Problem Solving.     Book needs more explanations and less fluff

    Book needs more explanations on problems and less "Study habit reminders" and other fluffy stuff that I just skip over. What student has time to read the "extra optional stuff"?

    In my humble opinion, this book doesn't explain problems well.

    It doesn't explain WHY. It assumes you know WHY problems are solved in certain ways.

    For example, on page 110, she throws a property at you:

    "If A is a positive number, then | X | < a is equivalent to -a < X < a."

    It would really help me understand this property if I knew WHY| X | < a is equivalent to -a < X < a.

    The answer book should explain more also - especially for problems that are different from the examples.

    I do like the idea of concept checks though.

    Disorganized

    This book is very hard to follow in my opinion.
    The main problem is that the actual information is lost in the middle of plenty of examples making it very hard for the student to synthesize the topic. To make matter worse, the example seems to stick out more that the remaining of the text due to too much colors in the titles. Most of the text of each chapter could fit in just a couple pages highlighted by a couple of judicious examples and demonstrations.

    This book was exactly what I expected it to be. I just finished up with Elementary Algebra and am going straight into Intermediate and a lot of the beginning chapters are review over what we discussed in Elementary Algebra. I like to be given the opportunity to remind myself of all the rules and how things are done. This book allows a person to do just that.
    I give the book five stars because it is exactly what I expected the book to be.

She gets to the heart of communicating: what form should it take, how to structure it, and how to execute it so that it has the best chance of achieving your purpose. In particular, I was helped immensely from her discussion about how to analyze your audience and choose the best strategy for relaying your message. She not only covers writing, but also presentations and speaking. To top it off, she includes advice about whitespace, word choice, effective sentence structures, outlining, and more. An all-around great book that every purposeful writer should own.

    Introduction

    The SQL language is the de facto standard language for relational databases, and Oracle's database server is the leading relational database on the market today. The Oracle by Example, third edition, presents an introduction to the Oracle SQL language in a unique and highly effective format. Rather than being a reference book, it guides you through the basic skills until you reach a mastery of the language. The book challenges you to work through hands-on guided tasks rather than read through descriptions of functionality. You will be able to retain the material more easily and the additional example questions reinforce and further enhance the learning experience.

    This book is intended for anyone requiring a background in Oracle's implementation of the SQL language. In particular, application developers, system designers, and database administrators will find many practical and representative real-world examples.     This book does not cover the entire Oracle SQL syntax, but emphasizes the essentials of the most-frequently used features with many examples to reinforce the learning. Some of Oracle's syntax options are too numerous and many very infrequently used; including them all would make the book swell by a several hundred additional pages. Instead, I have concentrated on those that you will use most. After performing the exercises, you will also have gained sufficient knowledge to read-up and understand the Oracle documentation, if needed. I hope that you will enjoy this learning experience and come away with the knowledge you hoped to gain.

    How This Book Is Organized

    Each chapter of the book is divided into labs covering a particular topic. The objective of each lab is defined at its beginning, with brief examples that introduce the reader to the covered concepts.

    Following the lab's introductory examples are exercises that are the heart of the lab which reinforce and expand the reader's knowledge of the subject. Each exercise consists of a series of steps to follow to perform specific tasks, or particular questions that are designed to help you discover the important aspects of the SQL language. The answers to these questions are given at the end of the exercises, along with more in-depth discussion of the concepts explored.

    After you perform the exercises and compare the answers with the sample queries, answers, and explanations, the lab ends with multiple-choice Self-Review questions. These are meant to test that you have understood the material covered in the lab. The answers to these questions appear in Appendix A.     At the end of each chapter, the Test Your Thinking section reinforces the topics learned in labs, and solidifies your skills. The answers to these questions are found on the companion Web site for this book.

    What You will Need

    To complete the exercises you need the following:

      The Oracle® database software

      Oracle's SQL*Plus software or a Web browser

      Access to the Internet

    Oracle 10g

    Oracle 10g is Oracle's latest version of the relational database software and its flagship product. You can use either the Personal Edition or Enterprise Edition. Various beta versions of the Enterprise edition of Oracle 10g were used to create the exercises for this book.

    If you have a previous version of the Oracle database you will be able to complete a large majority of the exercises, however some syntax options and features are only available in Oracle 10g. Review the companion Web site for more details.

    If you don't have the latest release of the Oracle software available, you can obtain a trial copy of the latest release from Oracle's Web site at http://www.oracle.com. You have the option of either downloading the Personal or Enterprise editions or purchasing a CD pack from the Oracle store (http://oraclestore.oracle.com) for a nominal fee.

    Oracle SQL*Plus software or web browser

    You can perform all the exercises in this book with Oracle's SQL*Plus software. Alternatively, you can use iSQL*Plus, a Web-based version, which does not require the installation of the Oracle SQL*Plus software on your individual machine. Only a browser is necessary. The iSQL*Plus version simplifies the editing and offers a superior display of the result. However, iSQL*Plus does not allow certain functionality and this is pointed out where applicable. For a list of unsupported commands refer to Appendix C, "SQL*Plus Command Reference." Instead of SQL*Plus you can also use alternate SQL execution environments and a list is available in Appendix H, "Resources."

    Access to the Internet

    About the Student Schema

    Throughout this book, you access data from a sample schema called STUDENT, which contains information about a computer education program. The schema was designed to record data about instructors, courses, students, and their respective enrollments and grades.

    After you download the installation files to create the schema within your Oracle database, you will be able to follow the exercises in the book. In Chapter 1, "SQL and Data," you are introduced to the relational concepts necessary to read the schema diagram. Appendix D, "Student Database Schema," shows you a graphical representation of the schema and Appendix E, "Table and Column Descriptions" lists descriptive information about each table and column.

    Learning By Examples

    I had picked up a copy of O'Reilly's "Oracle SQL*Plus" text. Read through the first few pages, got discouraged, and the book sat on the shelf for five years.
    Since then, I have become a strong believer of "Learning by doing". Last year, I had bought this book with the same philosophy in mind. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. As the other reviewers have pointed out, the author starts with simple examples and builds on the material. Every concept is followed by at least one example.

    The questions at the end of each chapter reinforce the concepts covered in the chapter. The answers (to the questions) introduce more concepts followed by more examples, and the learning process goes on and on ...

    All in all, an excellent resource to learn Oracle's sqlplus.

    Having said that, what this book is not is a certification guide. For those aspiring to write the Oracle certification exams will have to go an extra mile of investing time & money in another text that is specifically geared towards certifications. And this is where I am heading next.

    Very Good Resource for SQL and Oracle.

    You will like this book! I knew absolutely nothing about SQL, but this book will put your mind at ease. The author is easygoing and writes what could be a very tough topic in a non-intimating way. Believe me, this book will quickly become your best friend when it comes to learning SQL/Oracle. This book is so detailed that it covers every conceivable aspect of SQL/Oracle. Personally, I just wanted to learn SQL and really don't know what database I want to use at this point, but this book is an excellent way to learn SQL -- especially for those that like to learn at their own pace like I do. So, if you are a "learn-it-yourselfer" like I am, you will love it. It even has end of chapter review questions to reinforce in the learning. Plus, it's a terrific resource after you complete the chapters.

    Now the downside: I would say the only confusing part is uploading the tutorial database (which you have to do from the author's website. It will take a little brainpower and a few aspirin because the directions on the author's website assume some previous knowledge. But trust me; you will eventually get it to work. I should tell you that it would be helpful, not necessary, but helpful to know a little bit about relational databases (like MS Access) before you tackle Oracle. Anther thing to know is that the author tells you that you need the Standard or Professional full editions, which would be very expensive and only necessary if you own a Fortune 500 company! But, thankfully, you do not need the full versions. All you need is the Express Edition to practice on and the book tutorials are well suited to it. The Express Edition is free software downloadable from Oracle's website, and really, it's all the casual hobbyist needs anyway and it's plenty powerful. Now, for those who are not familiar with Oracle, it has a completely different look and feel from ...like MS Access, for example. Oracle looks like DOS and initially feels just as clunky. But, it will grow on you. You also can apply the SQL concepts to Microsoft SQL Server if you want to learn another DB.

    So if you are really serious and dedicated about learning databases, and don't mind a difficult initial set up, buy this book.

    The best and most under rated SQL book

    I use SQL daily and I'm still not very good at it.
    I don't pick up languages easily or memorize syntax
    or vocabulary be it French, Spanish or SQL.
    So, several times a day I pick up this book
    to reference how to do something with SQL that I need
    to know NOW before moving on to my next 20
    emergency du jures.
